How long do we persist with them? We have made the finals once in a decade with Spook not in the team.

We can't continue to play the same players and keep failing

He missed pretty much all of last year and half of this one, it takes 4 to 6 years for a lot of players to find their feet. We need depth, if he signs for a smaller wage like Billings and Ross you wouldn't deliberately push them out unless you have serious cap issues or are going for another rebuild. Otherwise you'd want an upgrade ready to go. 2020 was still a weird year with what looks like we had a bit of luck on our side. Most of our kids played exceptionally well, we had a low injury count and seemed to adapt well to hub life.

To me those guys are still best 22 and if one of Crouch and Dunstan can always being pushed out we are in a good place with a really good depth. Billings is a better player than Hill so unless he's asking overs you'd be insane to push him out because we've pretty much overpaid for a downgrade. Seb Ross is a solid B grader despite what people think, he's been able to fill roles this year and his adaptability and older head means he's a best 22 player. Again sign him as long as he doesn't hold them to ransom.

I hope they all play for lesser contracts next year, as much as everyone wants to bag them and blame them for our poor season these are the guys who put in the hard yards and stayed loyal through our most period since the 1980s. It's got to count for something. If in a couple of years these guys are pushed out of the best 22 it's because a lot of kids have come on and we would be ain a very good place at that point.

What is salary cap position? Do you have the space to trade in any good players?

Should have some room to work with, the following is a rough estimate. Even with Signing all of Dunstan, Billings and Ross have over 1.5m in space.

Yeah Nah ,,,, No good players are available after the first round

About one in every 20 top 10 picks would be guns, about one in 2000 outside pick 50 would be guns.

Huge war chest to land multiple types of big fish.

Trouble is that we would want to be careful as next year have Long, Paton, Butler, Hannebery, Mckenzie Bytel, Steele, Webster, Battle, Allison, Marshall, Byrnes, and Highmore out of contract.

Most of those would be getting the same value contract if not more than what they are on currently.

I would say its more like 3-4 players out of the top 10 would be classed as A grade or very close to it , Your 1 in every top 20 is just ridiculous

I'd loved us to get Constable. No shame in being behind the likes of Selwood, Danger, Guthrie, Duncan, Parfitt etc. He could flourish given the chance. In fact, when he's played he's always done well.

Being behind a group of stars means you can get off the chain though. He might not be much better than Bytel once you put him in a more agricultural midfield.

I was going off a vibe more than facts, but thank you for reinforcing my argument. Top 10 picks are much more likely to find guns than the back end of the draft where it's like trying to find a mushroom in a field of shits.

Ideal scenario for me is to get rid of Dunstan and Ross.
We are definitely kicking the tyres on at least one free agent to potentially replace those two.

An upgrade though? That writes of any compo then. I'm happy to lose them if we are getting something right away, No point in a draft pick that might take 5 years to get to that level.

Ah the old Marbo , Nah what i did was prove that you didn't know what you were talking about

Only 3-4 of those guys are locked in to our best 22 though, we shouldn't be ramping contracts up much for guys who are rehabbing or playing VFL.

Gees scrappy you’ve really got it in for billings,

Depends on the price and contract but I like his size as a point of difference and if he doesn’t make it at least sandy will have a big mid for a couple of years.

There are at least 3 I would hope to drop off the list and another lot that won't be much more than they are on. Steele is the only really underpaid one.

Nah, you just proved me right. I was suggesting that late picks are a lucky dip but for every toy there are a heap more empty bags. The reason most top players were drafted at the top end of the draft is that the best players have a much higher chance of being up the top of the draft because they are already the best players early on.

Very True,

I would also include Paton in that, before the injury was probably one of the first picked each week, and I don't think the club would reduce his contract, probably on the same. Then guys like Byrens, Bytel and Highmore are still playing on their rookie contracts, which you would assume would be increased after next year, and all three are likely to be the future of the club.

I don't think Geelong are keen to lose him so would cost something. He's being developed to take over from the old guys, they usually get good value for their cast offs.
