Frankly if he came in and helped win us a flag playing Wing I wouldn't care one bit if he walked to Tassie a few years later for free. I'd still clap him everytime he got the ball for getting us 17 before those scumbags at windy hill

We’d still get compensation with a start-up club and transfers. Prob allowed 1 per club (along with some marquee players on top).

Also a big career risk heading to a start-up club in the early years. Will the AFL get the balance right to ensure the club is competitive early days? Will enough high-profile players take the $ to ensure success or will they need to wait for the draft concessions to mature like GWS and GC. There will be significant pressure from existing clubs to not over compensate the new club and quality players will reject the big paydays to stay (or move elsewhere) and play for flags. How many thrashing will they endure in the early years? It took GWS 5 years to make finals, but Gold Coast still aren't there yet.

If I was a player manager, I'd be saying stay at the blues, win flags and if you want to look for a move, wait till you're older and the Tassie club has proven it can be competitive

I think they’ve realised it’s about the infrastructure of the club too, so the stadium & facilities will enable a better lead-in from the commencement.
You really need to see a start of the team like the Adelaide Crows. Limited Taswegians about though in the AFL.

I think clubs will be wary of picking up Cowan, given the go-home factor. And any compensation will be diluted by compromised drafts if/when the Tassie team goes ahead.

The Tassie submission is to join in 2027, I’m not sure if that’s in the VFL for a year like the Giants and Suns, that’s still 4 years for any Tassie kid and that’s if they leave straight away.

To me, it wouldn’t matter where I played, if I was in a premiership window, I wouldn’t leave until I had won one or the window was done.

Assuming players will leave as soon as a Tassie team comes in is a bit of a reach, it’s a risk of course, but if we rate him highly and he slips, you don’t pass that up for something that might happen four years down the track.

Why is the go-home factor more of an issue for Cowan than any other interstate player?

Even if Tasmania gets a license I dare say their entry into the league is still a couple of years away - they'll probably come in via the reserves competition as GC and GWS did. Be a very brave 18 year old kid - and a very stupid manager - to compromise his career because Tasmania are coming in a few years.
If he goes back to tassie, the afl will ensure carlton get nothing

Quite like the look of this lad, 188cm, booming kick, very good speed and looks to take the game on at every opportunity. Captain of Tassie and won the Morrish medal too

While he lacks the absolute consistency of Top 8-9 ranked prospects, if you like players such Cam Guthrie, Steele Sidebottom, Keidian Coleman, Jayden Short and Ed Langdon, it's really hard not to like Cowan. He's a genuine run-and-gun line-breaker who has exquisite disposal by hand and foot, can find his own ball, stick a tackle, is a good decision-maker and importantly, follows up his work at speed to gain two and three possessions in a chain of play. He's also shown the ability to play in the middle at times where he's capable of flying through the stoppage and out the other side with ball in hand like a tornado.

If I'm looking at prospects (realistically available) between Picks 10 & 20 that have the potential to expand and develop their game to take themselves to the next level then Cowan is right up there. He stands at 188cm & 81kg, but will only become stronger and more powerful as he puts on size once he enters an elite AFL environment. If he can make it through preseason uninjured and achieving benchmarks the development & coaching staff set him, Cowan could play 8-10 games in his first season.

FWIW, this kid will test really well at the Combine in many areas, including speed, endurance, agility, clean hands and kicking so I'd expect him to come into the late teens (15-19) in terms of a selection. Given Pick 10 could end up at Pick 12 (Ashcroft bid & potential Amon compo depending on contract) I don't think he's that much of stretch at our Pick. Others will disagree, but each to their own.

From what I've read he's likely to be picked right after that pick 20 range. I'd be very happy to trade up a couple of selections with our 2nd round pick to get him, like the aggressive attitude he plays with

Yeah I had a bit of a look at him. He's be one of my selections.
I'm a bit unashamedly biased having living in Tassie for more than half my life, but the kids there play on men at an early age, so if they have fitness base and skills they are pretty much AFL ready.

Jack Reiwoldt was out marking and kicking goals on players in the SFL when he was a 16yo.

Anyway, here's a few I think that would address our needs, depending on if we take them early or they slide.

10: Bailey Humphrey / Cam McKenzie / Elijah Hewett
28: Olli Hotton / Lachie Cowan / Max Michalanney

Hotton will be gone, will get taken in the 1st round

Would be nice to swap 10 and 28 for two picks around 18-20, even throw in something from 2023.
Hotton and Cowan would look good in Blue.
GWS potentially could be a good trading partner here. They'll likely get a bunch of late 1st round picks from Tiggs and Cats through trades, so may be looking to move up the draft order.

I’d be in favour of keeping 10 and offloading 28 and future second for an early teens pick. Teams are desperate to get more picks for next year (whilst we need them now) and this would hopefully allow us to nab best available at 10 and someone like a hotton in the 13-16 range, whilst also holding onto our future first rounder.

Does Humphrey have enough AFL traits, ball winning, pace, extraction, mongrel to make up for his apparent poor disposal?

Ive seen him compared to Dangerfield, didn’t he slide due to poor disposal?

It's a tough one. Already a big body, but kicking is a real concern

A close watch today

I very much doubt it. It's an hour on the plane. He could go home every weekend if he wanted. Not like it's a 3 hour flight to WA.
