Serious post for once………drum roll.

Often we post, ‘Draft for position they play’

Theres thousands of young blokes who play underage footy. What’s to say, they’re playing their best position at underage? Especially the on-ballers. Recruiters look at body type, skills, bloodlines, etc etc. This premise is not necessarily a fate de compli when they play against the big boys. It’s a lottery more than a draft on most occasions. Every team has draft busts, we just use it as another opportunity to snipe our club when we don’t win.

And, my view…………Stocker was in, and now is unceremoniously cut, there’s more to this.

George would be a gamble at 10, but I’d certainly trade up from 28 if given the chance. Kemp had an injury. Cripps dropped. Curnow dropped.

The Stocker news should have absolutely no impact on whether or not we execute a trade. Why would it?
We have done it three times in recent memory and each time has been a failure, I’m hesitant to do it again.

If there’s someone there you want, trade up from our second to get them, not down.

I don't necessarily want them to draft a player to play the position that they've played their underage football in.

I want a player to be able to play the position that they're drafted for from day one be it in the VFL while they're developing or in the seniors (if they're ready from day one).

I hate it when a recruiter or list manager says "We've drafted X. We believe that he'll be a fantastic <position> WHEN/IF he develops <aspect of his game>. Until then we'll play him at <less demanding position>."

The reality is that you've drafted a player in that lesser position as the player is not a certainty to develop the aspect of the game that they require to play the idealized position.

In Stocker's case, SOS drafted a small-to-medium defender at the AFL level with the goal of him developing into a midfielder. You need to ask yourself if that pick can be considered a success if they never develop beyond being capable of playing their original drafted position. Sometimes the answer will be affirmative and other times that would be a no.

For example, when we drafted Cripps he was initially played as a tall wingman. Had he not developed his ability to play predominantly through the middle that pick could have still been successful. There are a number of very successful tall wingers who are weapons for their team. At the time the Carlton midfield was headlined by Gibbs, Murphy, and Ed Curnow in their primes, and Chris Judd coming off the rousing 2013 Elimination Final and with seemingly a good 2-3 years of high-level football ahead of him (or so we hoped). Thus, if Cripps remained a tall wingman who could rotate through the midfield it'd have still been a successful selection.

On the other hand, I think it's safe to say that Stocker's failure and success have been measured by his inability to develop into a permanent midfielder.

It's easier said than done to develop a vital component of your game that is lacking when coming into the AFL.

Phillipou will be gone in the first dozen picks
Hope we get the opportunity to snare Matteas, the lad is just about the perfect choice for our team, at 192 cm , a mid-fwd, solid to good skill set, nice kick and sound footy IQ not slow too.
I’d be happy with his addition , he’ll be first select from his state.

Basically Liam was unprofessional about his footy, overweight and unfit, couldn’t see a game at out, at senior level , after 4 yrs at a club it’s a no go.
Unfortunately for us Liam had little desire or motivation , intensity to improve, its sad because he has talent.

If this was the prevailing thought going into rounds 22 and 23 then why on earth would you entrust the bloke to play his part in the final two rounds of the season with finals on the line?

However, if you think Stocker is the only player that we've drafted and failed with by the player failing to live up to expectations (realistic or otherwise) then you're kidding.

Far too many developmental failures.

Are they all unprofessional? Does the club bare any responsibility?

In fairness, we had no other half backs to pick for those last 2 games. It was either him or Newnes. Don't think the fact he was picked tells us anything about where he sat in the pecking order.

The fact it hasn't worked doesn't mean the mechanism can't or shouldn't be used.

The club should explore all avenues available to them, be it trade up, down, in or out.

This

And we were forced to move Doc into the midfield depleting another HB option. Just one more of the top mids available for the last 2 games and Stocker wouldn’t have played at all.

I just don’t get why players don’t give it their all to be the best they can when they’ve made it to the top level, it’s truly bizarre considering you’ve spent 75% of your life to that stage trying to get there.

Some players have so much talent as a junior, going at 75% is enough to differentiate themselves from their peers. Gets them selected, but they don't have good habits ingrained. Which leads to them quickly falling behind.

Some kids it comes easy 90% of the way up.

They could always just do it, intuitively.

So when they have to find the rhythm of hard work and the humility of sacrifice for the team, they stumble

The more I've been looking at it the more I'd love Ollie Hollands. Elite runner with generally good skills and isn't afraid of a contest. Would set us up nicely to look at bringing his brother in from GC later down the line. Elijah imo is just a much better Philippou, freakish talent who's just finding his feet at AFL level now after his ACL in his draft year.

Really like the look of him!

I think we should move up the draft
Id be happy to give up 11 and next yrs first as
Sheezel is the one i really want
If not Id like Phillipou, Ginbey and Mackenzie to fall to 11. dont rate Humphrey at all

I would do that for Scheezel. I doubt we can get a pick high enough though. Clubs will expect us to move up next year so wouldn't value our future first that highly.

It makes perfect sense to me, in theory. Do you know or remember any instances where it has worked out well?

Remember the Dogs trading down from pick 13 to two second rounders?

All I’m remembering is bad deals, I’d like to hear some good ones.
