List Mgmt. 2022 AFL Draft

The one thing we can say is that we shouldn't be picking generic flankers. i.e. no Hugh Jackson types.

Whilst I generally agree with the sentiment, Hugh's probably not the best example, he was recruited as a genuine midfielder in U18s. We played him outside, probably as much to protect him after his surgery as anything.

https://central.rookieme.com/afl/player/hugh-jackson/
Hugh Jackson

Jackson has repeatedly demonstrated his ability to win possession through the midfield, with good stoppage craft and clean hands giving him an advantage inside the contest. Even when heavily contested, Jackson is able to keep his feet, cleanly win possession and then deliver to a teammate's advantage, with his creativeness by hand often leading to impactful exits from stoppages. Without the football, Jackson can still have an influence around the contest. His defensive effort to prevent his opponents from exiting the stoppage adds another element to his midfield craft. Jackson is a capable tackler and he consistently smothers or deflects opposition attempts to win the ball away from the contest.

Don't need a midfielder unless there is an unbelievable slider. I can't see how a midfielder we draft will make it into our midfield in the coming years unless they are extremely good. We already have Mead and Drew who will struggle to get a place.

Could be partial to a small forward if there is a decent one available.

This is probably a draft to take two genuine talls in my opinion. One in the back half and one forward. It will be speculative but if you take two there is a fair chance one works out.

I think Lemmey might still be worth taking a punt on if he is there at 33. I like how he plays in comparison to our other talls. Good leading patterns, nice kicking action and can do some work up the ground. He needs to use his size better but that is developable. His leading is a nice.point of difference compared to a Visentin or Teakle for example.
Van Es/Lemmy/Keeler in that order, I’m still taking the punt on Lewis Hayes if he is there at 80 or whatever.

I would like another mid if we can squeeze one in, purely because we don't actually have that many genuine mids of proven quality (note I have excluded flankers that have yet to show that genuine mid can be their permanent home. This includes Butters, Bergman, Duursma, Houston, Jones & Sinn. They might make it, but at this stage we shouldn't be banking on it and ignoring the risk that they don't):
  • Boak 34
  • Wines 28
  • Drew 24 capable but can step up a level
  • SPP 24 playing as a HFF
  • Rozee 22
  • Horne Francis 20 potential star, but unproven at this stage

And then below that:
  • Dumont 27 AFL quality, but limited - excellent depth
  • Mead 21 unproven, may never reach the level
  • Jackson 20 unproven, project player

One more developing would be nice.
Enough evidence to suggest Butters can be a permanent mid.

The others all have some development to go but a fair chance a few of them make it. Midfielders are easier to develop than talls. If you look at our tall stocks, particularly in defence but also forward, many of those guys have a less than 50-50 chance of making it.

Like I have more faith in Duursma, Bergman, Sinn, Drew etc. being able to establish themselves as good midfielders than Lord, Pasini, Visentini, Teakle being good talls.

In Koch speak, I think good clubs over index on talls due to the lower likelihood that they come good. That's what we should be doing.

I heard today that Port have an interest in Will Verrall from South.
I hope so! I really like him a lot. At 199/200cm he is a good height, but I love the way he moves. Got a good kick, has good smarts, and takes a great mark . He is a really good tap ruckman, but IMO could play any key position - Front or back

Will definitely get on an AFL list in the draft.

Harry Barnett 202cm/93kg Ruck West Adelaide

Harry Lemmey 199cm/93kg Key Forward West Adelaide

Isaac Keeler 198cm/88kg Key Forward/ruck North Adelaide

Phoenix Foster 197cm/87kg Key Forward/Ruck Norwood

Tom Scully 202cm/89kg Key Forward/Ruck West Adelaide

Will Verrall 200cm/92kg Ruckman South Adelaide
If any of these guys make it to 60 or the rookie draft we should be all over them even if it means working out they are no good and delisting them at the first opportunity.

I remember him that’s a blast from the past.
Did he play state football for SA?
I can sort of see him in the jumper.

I think he might have with West. Was undersized as a ruck, never did much at Port.

Jesus van es ran like a 2.91 20m sprint.

I never realised he was such a good athlete. I always had him down as a footballers footballer who had natural defensive instincts.

1st noticed him a while back, reckon was a futures game. Didn’t do heaps but noticed a couple of things he did where he looked a natural feel for his position.

I think he’s a really good fit next to pasini.

Van es and pasini to potentially lock down our key defensive posts for years would be great.

Jones would be a good get from what I’ve seen in the WAFL.
If we are looking for local talent I’d go Ryan from Glenelg.
Still think we need another goal kicking small forward, McEntee is not a goal kicker ,was given games till he kicked some (in big wins) and jury.is still out on Rioli getting back to top form. Zane Williams never got a shot at Geelong and Lowe and Gore are still out there, would be better options than Evans who.has never made an impact in multiple seasons at the top level
