NFL 2022 - Coaching and GM Updates

PFN's Aaron Wilson reports that the Steelers are expected to name secondary coach Teryl Austin defensive coordinator in the wake of Keith Butler's retirement.

Austin was fired mid-season as Bengals defensive coordinator in 2018 and had been the Lions defensive coordinator for four years before the Matt Patricia hire spilled him out. Austin had some pedigree of success with the Lions, and it'll be interesting to see how much of a change this actually is from the standard Steelers defense that has been mostly unchanged for years, if not decades.

Report: Dan Quinn interviewing with Giants Monday

Posted by Josh Alper on January 22, 2022, 8:15 PM EST

The Giants started their head coaching interviews later than most other teams looking for new ones this offseason, but they’re making good progress.

They got their first two interviews out of the way by speaking with Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll and defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier. Albert Breer of SI.com reports that Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn will join the list on Monday.

Quinn has also interviewed with or is set to interview with the Broncos, Bears, Vikings and Dolphins. All of the interest would seem to be a good sign for his chances of getting back in a top job after being fired by the Falcons early in the 2020 season.

The Giants are also expected to interview their defensive coordinator Patrick Graham and there’s been word that former Dolphins coach Brian Flores could also be in the mix.

Bears complete interviews with Todd Bowles, Dan Quinn

Posted by Josh Alper on January 22, 2022, 5:15 PM EST

The Bears interviewed a pair of defensive coordinators with head coaching experience on Saturday.

The team announced that they have completed interviews with Buccaneers defensive coordinator Todd Bowles and Cowboys defensive coordinator Daw Quinn as they continue their search for a new head coach.

Both coaches have been on the lists of several teams during this year’s head coaching cycle. Quinn was set to meet with the Vikings, Broncos, and Dolphins this week and the Giants have also requested an interview with him. Bowles has interviewed with the Vikings and Jaguars, whose request to interview Quinn was declined.

Doug Pederson, Brian Flores, Jim Caldwell, Nathaniel Hackett, and Brian Daboll have also interviewed with the Bears since they fired Matt Nagy. They are expected to interview Saints defensive coordinator Dennis Allen as well.

Hackett and Daboll are the only candidates without NFL head coaching experience in eight-man group.

Hopefully Miami gives him a call
Payton is contracted to the Saints through 2026. Payton either coaches the Saints in 2022 or retires, there’s little option to coach anywhere else.

Of course there is. Can be traded like gruden was to Bucs.

Giants interviewing Lou Anarumo

Posted by Josh Alper on January 23, 2022, 11:10 AM EST

Bengals defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo has come up with winning game plans the last two weeks and he’s moved himself into consideration for at least one head coaching job.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Media reports that the Giants are interviewing Anarumo for their head coaching vacancy on Sunday morning. It’s the first time Anarumo’s name has come up in conjunction with a head coaching job.

Anarumo was the Giants’ defensive backs coach in 2018 before joining Zac Taylor’s staff in his current role in 2019. The Bengals struggled defensively in his first two seasons and were middle of the pack this year, but they’ve looked very good while allowing 35 total points in their wins over the Raiders and Titans in the first two rounds of the playoffs.

The Giants have also interviewed Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll and defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier since hiring Joe Schoen as their General Manager on Friday. Schoen worked for the Bills before being hired, but there’s a connection with Anarumo as both men were in the Dolphins organization from 2012 to 2016.

Sean Payton’s future with the Saints becomes an issue

Posted by Mike Florio on January 23, 2022, 9:31 AM EST

The man who coined the phrase Sunday Splash! report is the topic of one all over again.

Saints coach Sean Payton, who went through a stretch of multiple seasons in which NFL pregame newshounds sniffed around (and reported about) the possibility of Payton leaving New Orleans, has not yet committed to remaining with the team in 2022, reports Ian Rapoport of NFL Media.

Payton has three years left on his contract.

Unnamed sources tell Rapoport it’s “unlikely” that Payton would coach another team in 2022. Instead, it would be (per Rapoport) a “mini-retirement” after an “incredibly challenging and difficult” season.

If Payton would resurface in 2023, the Saints would be entitled to compensation — the same way the Cardinals were when Bruce Arians unretired after one year and went to the Buccaneers. (The Cardinals, who weren’t exactly upset Arians retired and may have nudged him, ultimately got a sixth-round pick from the Bucs, and sent back a seventh. Payton would surely get much more than that for the Saints.)

Despite the characterization from Rapoport that it’s “unlikely” Payton would coach elsewhere in 2022, he still could. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, for example, could decide that Mike McCarthy has taken the franchise as far as he can, and that the only way to get to the next level would be to land one of the handful of great NFL coaches.

Jones nearly got Payton a few years ago. It came far closer to happening than anyone realizes. The full story is shared in a certain book that will be released on March 15. The reason why it didn’t happen will indeed blow your mind.

I know you’re thinking, “He’s just trying to sell books.” And you’re absolutely right. But the reason will still blow your mind.

We’ll address in a separate post whether Jones would indeed try to upgrade over McCarthy, whether by acquiring Payton or someone else, and how it would work. For now, the point is that, even if Payton doesn’t end up joining the Cowboys, he could be leaving the Saints — 16 years after he arrived.
And if it’s not true, if Payton will indeed be back in 2022, look for him to not be bashful about calling out the latest waves from a Sunday Splash!, whether on Twitter or elsewhere.

The only team in worse cap purgatory than the Packers are the Saints. If he leaves, that’s the reason why.

———————–

Both teams are in purgatory because they were afraid of rebuilding and paid their aging QBs far more than they should’ve to remain relevant for a few more years. Now that the bill is due, it’s going to be someone else’s problem.

I just don’t think Jerry and Sean are a good fit. Look at how Jerry undermined Parcells causing him to leave. I don’t think Payton would want to have to put up with Jerry and his meddling. Is there any way we can trade franchise owners?

--------

No coach who’s in a position of power and in high demand will ever take the Cowboys head coaching job until Senile Jones is gone

--------

Everybody wants to Favre it these days.

--------

If Payton takes a year off and comes back in 2023, he would be a good fit to replace Carroll in Seattle. That’s a change that could compell Wilson to stay.

--------

Good coach , yes . Great coach absolutely not . He’s won a SB but has underachieved in the playoffs since . He has yet to prove his success wasn’t because of Brees . Bottom line he’s got a ways to go before he achieves great status . Winning without Brees would be a good start but it’s looking like he’s not up to the challenge .

--------

Imagine if he went to Jacksonville. Good QB. Lots of potential.

Mike Florio says the reason Payton to Cowboys didn't happen years ago was absolutely crazy and unbelievable. Wonder what it was.

Also, that Jones has another high profile coach in mind to poach. Also Jones mentioned Belichick recently (even tho that's tampering).

Jones the type who'd have someone on the side he's wheeling and dealing to hire before he ever fires existing coaches, would never fire someone and then try to embark on a search.

This could be huge.

There was a report lastweek that TV partners were already reaching out to McVay, Payton and Caroll about leaving coaching to broadcast games.

There was talk that the Cowboys had to trade for his rights. but didnt want to.

But Florio said the there was apparently some unbelievable crazy thing involved that caused Payton to not take the job.
Prob Jerry staying as GM or wanted to keep Garrett as OC.

Or he is talking s**t like he does.

There's been 5 coaches that have been traded or left their current team under contract and their former team got compensation

1. Bill Belichick resigned from Jets to take Patriots job. Comp trade was worked out it was 2000 1st and 2001 4th and 7th rounder while giving back 2001 5th rounder and 2002 7th rounder.

2. Bill Parcells basically forced his move to Jets from Patriots. Comp trade was 1997 3rd and 4th round, 1998 2nd, 1999 1st round.

3. Jon Gruden traded from Raiders to Bucs for 2002 1st and 2nd, 2003 1st, 2004 2nd and 8 mil cash.

4. Mike Holgrem traded from Green Bay to Seattle for 1999 2nd Round pick.

5. Herman Edwards traded from Jets to Kansas City for 2006 4th round pick.

So 5 times in history and 3 involve the Jets.

I'd love a 6 time to happen with Payton.
