Whitfield is an absolute gun. He's fast, covers a lot of ground and is a beautiful kick off both sides. In '18,'19,'20 there was no better decision maker in the comp in my opinion. Around then my brothers and I posed the hypothetical 'if the saints could pick one player from any team...' I had Whitfield in a heartbeat.
He's had a horror run with injuries the past couple of years. In '21 preseason training he got a bad knock which resulted in a bruised liver. It got worse and his liver inflated like a balloon which pushed up against his lungs. He couldn't run or do any strenuous exercise for months and missed the first six rounds. He started to look good as the '21 season progressed but missed another couple of games with a concussion. Of the eight games he didn't play that year GWS lost seven and they made the semis. He was back to his best at the end of the year, starring in round 21 with 34 disposals in their win against Geelong at GMBHA. Backed it up a few weeks later with another 34 disposals in the semi final loss to Geelong.
This year he looked ripe and ready to go after a full preseason but copped an an ankle injury early on which the club decided to 'manage', delaying an operation till the end of the season. He admitted he wasn't able to run the kilometres he would've liked and as GWS's season imploded he was one of the most relocated deck chairs on the Titanic. As Leon Cameron went into full panic mode he was played at centre bounces, wing, half back and half forward, sometimes all in the one game. He never got any flow with his game this year and missed another couple of games late with a hip flexor injury which didn't help. He's obviously had less impact this year but that's understandable (unlike Nick Haynes who seems half the player he was for no apparent reason). If he can make a full recovery from the ankle injury I'd be all over him like a rash. None of his injuries are related and we're not talking hamstrings and calves.
Someone said we don't need another 29 year old so it's worth pointing out that Whitfield turned 28 about 7 weeks ago. Plenty of good football left in him.
He's got 4 years left on his contract at roughly a million a year. Wouldn't want to pay that but if GWS want him off their books and are prepared to do a 'Treloar' and pay 250/300 of his salary I'm all in. Would be a massive upgrade on Hill.

2019 he was a gun. Been downwards spiral since with form and injury. Massive upgrade on Hill is hardly a strong point seeing as we have about 25 players on our list who are an upgrade on Hill.

and he's 28.

Yeah, he got $1 mill a year for a reason. He was what we'd hoped Kelly would become when we were sniffing around him. If he'd played for a Melbourne side he would have been a superstar. He's 10x the player Hill ever was at their peaks.

He's a top shelf player who isn't in the same boat as Hanners who was cooked after 2016 IMO. If you can get those types cheap you have a little look or you're negligent.

They are pretty stretched on SC. Maybe a complete SC dump. If we don't get DeGoey (looks like thats true) and we lose Hill, we will have a shitload of SC. We could take the lot for a 3rd rounder

You bring him in and you get to send Sincs to the midfield so it's a double win next year. Send Coffield onto the other HBF and you have two clean users.

I like the Thomas idea and we should be having a crack at him, same with Bruhn.

I think this year is a golden opportunity to secure that mid base and get them playing as a group. I would be happy to trade out future 1st and 2nd for a good deal.

TT has had a horrible attitude recently. Looked a star but he looks a problem child. Bruhn would be worth a look but cost might hurt.

Unfortunately it's not 2018, 19 or 20

At 28 and looking like he's past his best, we'd want Giants paying a chunk of his salary and letting him for a later pick.

I don't see that happening.

Yeah, I think you'd want to get him as a salary dump cheapie but you don't get much access to elite level talent. His kicking and distribution is insane. There are always reasons not to take risks but safety first doesn't go anywhere either. DeGoey and Whitfield and you'd hope we'd have a decent crack at top 4.

Giants Salary Cap problems are not so severe they need to dump Tarranto Hopper Hill and Whitfield. Maybe they think his best is behind him and at $1M per season they are better off without him and I agree with them, do not want for exactly those reasons but they won't dump him for nothing. Has potential Hannebury vibes and we already have a better HB Flanker in Sinclair and he actually defends as well.

Watching our old team on YouTube recently

Where did we get Roo, BJ, Lenny, Dal, Joey?

Yes we had bad luck with Paddy, but we haven't used picks well, generally speaking, for a long time.

We got Roo because we were awful. We didn't need to make a decision on him because we got a priority pick to get Kosi the same day because we were awful.
We got BJ because Carlton lost pick one due to their usual cheating.
Dal and Joey were decent selections.
There was a fair bit of charity and luck to that cohort.
Lenny was pick seven for memory.

Didn't Gubby get caught doing some dodgy recruiting for Whitfield? If so there may be more than smoke.

Take all of his salary and throw in Bruhn for 2nd and third. Absolute mandatory must is that Whitfield is fit to play not carrying or lingering soreness, any doubt no deal.

Bruhn is the cherry.

Replace our second with Hill trade from North.

Small increase in SC but get two quality players and preserve pick 9 for Humphrey or McKenzie and wildcard in late 20s.

Upgrade on a HBF who can at least halve a contest and is an elite kick and a pick 12 30 game onballer who could develop into who knows...right age demographic too.

Bruhn is a Geelong boy which may be an issue but 50 min by car from Morabbin is better than 8 hours from Sydney

Maybe it’s the atmosphere he’s been in?
Would have to do a lot of homework on him and his attitude first though.

Totally agree I fear another Hannebery scenario unfolding.

A Whitfield deal could well be on the cards knowing Gubby Allan has had dealings with him before.
Very few players are worth a million a year and Whitfield is not one of them so he would have to take a big pay cut coming to us and we wouldn't be using our first on him so I don't know how the deal would get done unless Hill is used in some 3 way trade with North.

Also while the Bombers are in crisis now is the time to go after there best young players , we could easily nab someone who just wants out.
Who's to say Merrett , Parish want out or one of the kids they have drafted.

One of the radio mobs mentioned Parish as a one to watch next year as a pre-agent or whatever they call it.
If true could potentially be pried out early
