Same rule applies to this thread as other years, keep it on topic about the kids.
Don’t get bogged down on what other teams might do or where they will finish.

Trade speculation belongs here.

That's also where you can discuss your mock drafts or pick trades.

Any McCabe, Dear or Maginness talk belongs here.

Well, I'm over here in Istanbul for business, so the wiz can give me a call and I'll accommodate. Hell, I just had friends and family all summer (here) that have come over for :
Get their teeth done
A couple of mates as we speak getting their hair done.
A cousin is here currently to get an operation on his stomach to lose weight.
And one friend earlier got her nose done!!
I'm like a motel where people crash during operations 😂. İstanbul is like a haven for humans who want improvements on their bodies.
I'm sure I can help the wiz with some height adjustments.

Just wait until after the draft.

If we don't get the Wiz, tell him to get traded to us and THEN he can visit.

At the time, Tambling was rated higher. Go and check every draft board in 2004. But we went into that trade period wanting two tall forwards for positional purposes. We knew Tigers were into Rough but not Buddy so we took Rough first.

He wasn't rated higher by us, we got who we wanted more.

Was a brilliant piece of bluff too, Tambling staying with Buckenara etc.

Wallace arguably more Dodo than Dodo is now during his press conference afterwards.

The really deep midfields tend to have players that can excel in other positions as well. We got really good service from Bruest, Rioli and even Poppy in the middle during our Golden era. Hodge was an A grade mid, and defender. Same with Burgoyne.

Hell, Mark Williams was very good at a couple of centre bounces in the 2008 GF.

The trick is to have them play somewhere like Croc can as a very effective HFF, or Day off the HBF, with an eye to them being players like Burgoyne and Hodge were. Then you just break the glass as they're needed inside the square in big or tight games. Worth mentioning Newcombe as a forward here as well.

The better teams always seem have a handful like this, who can give a chop out with much or any drop off in ball winning ability and clearances. Some like Hodge and Burgoyne could even add some more bite. Acker did similar with Brisbane as a BP or FP during their three peat era.

In the same vein, that also kept the opposition defence under constant pressure. There were games in that period where the forward line was changing every bounce, as Roughead would move from FF to Ruck-Rover, Breust, Cyril, Puopolo would attend the centre bounce, Gunston onto a wing, so Lewis would rest HFF, Burgoyne would play small forward, etc...the defender would find themselves playing on different Hawks throughout the game, unless they had the endurance and skills to follow them up the ground. Such versatility was a wonderful thing to have.

Correct, because we rated positional needs above best available talent.

If any other club had Pick 2 and they were selecting best available talent, they would have selected Tambling.

does anyone remember if Tambling was actually good in 2009?
Not much no. Plough would try and deflect criticism by saying "he's already done so much for the RFC" ... something like that anyway.

For the record, we stuffed up that draft but it ended up working out brilliantly for us.
We knew Tigers would take Lids at 1 and Dogs Griffen at 3 and we suspected Tigers would then take Roughy at 4 if we took Tambling at 2.
We bluffed thinking Tigers were desperate for a tall so we took Roughy at 2 thinking the Tigers would take Franklin at 4 still leaving us Tambling at 5.
The rest is history, they called our bluff and took Tambling leaving us Buddy.

The post draft days were horrible for us with Plough doing all these interviews going on about how Tigers got the two best mids in the land, whilst we were left with two talls who needed time to develop (and mind you our midfield at that time was pretty poor). That was why we drafted Lewis at 7 because by then we were despearte for a mid (and pre-draft Lewis was rated outside the top ten).

There you go...in the next ten years Tigers were nowhere near a Flag and we won four :)

After Reid, the next 4-5 could go in any conceivable order.

Curtin, Duursma, McKercher, Watson...
and I think Caddy will be taken higher than people project. 6-8 is my guess.

I re-watched Duursma's highlights last night - we simply have to get him if he's available.
Imagine a pack-marking Gunston who could also roll through the middle.
He will be just as capable as Harley Reid in the F50.
Beautiful to watch.

I re-watched Duursma's highlights last night and I'm absolutely convinced he gets towed up at AFL level.

Won't play many games next year for any team he's drafted to.

I have a serious question for you projectwatson, how many live National Championship and/or Coates League games have you watched this year?

I'd seen that before but had no idea the Wiz was in there. He did not look out of place there. I knew he'd been at the club, but you have to think they're calling his name unless he's gone before our selection.

I've watched him and Duursma train with us two years ago now. Watson did not miss a target. Both looked good in the drills they performed.

Many. Including his four games against VFL or equivalent sides. (Coburg, Box Hill, Carlton, Port Adelaide). Failed to have an impact in all four.

I encourage you to watch the highlights below and pin point exactly where you think my statement is wrong.

There’s a reason I don’t have an agenda against other prospects like Curtin or Mckercher. Will get towed up at AFL level.

I admit I have not seen any games, but projectdingbat has a point if you judge him on the sample he posted. I suppose you are saying there are better examples.

Duursma needs more physical development than Reid, Curtin or Watson.
He will be just fine after 2 pre-seasons.
Remember how skinny James Sicily was?
Looked like he was 16 years old!
Duursma is bigger, taller and stronger than Sicily as a draft prospect and they played in very similar roles.

Agree. No doubt natural development will help Duursma. He’s got a lot of room to grow.

I think a Marvel club will be the best landing spot for him and his game. He definitely prefers a dry track rather than a wet one. I question his ability to influence the game in conditions other than dry.

Another point to note is, his brother was a stick coming into the AFL. He’s since put on 10+kg from his draft year, however it hasn’t really helped his game.

For a start, this is not a highlights video.
