Has the number one draft pick ever been the best player in the draft? Have they ever come close?

I’d rather take punts on 6 and 11 (and a future first).

Problem is that the quality dips a bit at our pick. So I can see why we're throwing everything at Reid. Do we take 2 kids who are a bit meh, or 1 nearly guaranteed Gun?

Nick Riewoldt in 2000 off the top of my head. Luke Hodge may not have been the best in 2001 but was pretty damn good. That was also a pretty good draft pool. I get what you are saying but I think Reid is pretty likely to be a jet. I'm not saying go all in on him just saying it looks pretty obvious. I'll also say petracca wasn't number 1 but every other club bar stkilda had him at number 1.

The number one pick often goes to a basket case team and they don't develop.

Horne Francis, Daicos and Ashcroft JUH etc have looked like gun as #1s and Trac was a rightful number 1

There was a period where the 'best' players were actually the best athletes not footballer's ie Scully vs Martin. I was also thinking if Watt's went to Brisbane as example, he would have had brown to guide him and a much better chance to succeed.

North shoulda just tanked, outrageous they didn't.

They tried, even did the interchange thing to throw a game. Unfortunately for them West coast were just even worse (or better at tanking, take your pick)

While Reid looks to be a gun, I would think north need to take as much top end talent as possible, trading out too many pick for 1 player could be a disaster.

We could probably afford to take the risk more than they can.

just out of interest for those that know the draft- if we have no plans to draft Curtin anyway and we are looking at a Caddy/Leake at 6 do you think it's still too much to give up?

The equation would be closer, but I'm still pretty hesitant about parting with F1, given the uncertainty that surrounds next year atm.

If Curtin was on the board, surely we'd still take him. If for whatever reason we aren't keen, I could see some pretty good offers coming our way on draft night, which would be worth considering.

Leake looks a handy player, but I'd be pretty bummed if we reached with our first pick. Such a high draft spot for a mid-sized utility that doesn't really address our needs (unless the plan is for him to develop as a mid, or perhaps a Howe-type defender).

I reckon we'd plan to use Leake in the mid/forward role with Trac. Same as what they'd have planned for Reid. (Obviously he is by no means the type of player who makes an impact like Reid would in his first season)

I'm starting to think even if Reids, Petracca good or better it still destroys our list if we give up 3 top 15 picks. I think our drop off 12 months from now with Gawn and May will be huge.

Really he needs to come in and have a Daicos like impact in his first year, take us from an also ran to a genuine contender. Pretty ****ing big ask. Because yeah once Gawn & May go we probably arent challenging for a few years with or without Reid.
