From the article below:

"For instance, it would have allowed Adelaide to list one of Rory Sloane or Taylor Walker as a veteran for 2024 and opened up another spot on their primary list. The idea was designed to keep veterans in the game without sacrificing a list spot that a youngster may have taken, with the veteran’s full payments still counted in the salary cap."

Sorry to say but I hate that deal for us. The first part okay but as is becoming very obviously through this trade week clubs are not valuing picks past 20-25, indicating a very weak draft pool. ( eg Geelong with Esava, Melbourne giving 27,35 to move up 3 spots)

Next year is a strong mid heavy pool - and you want to give our F1 for pick 15 this year?

Would be by far the worst pick trade in our clubs history. Pick 15 will be worth a lot more next year - and that’s if we make a prelim final!!

giving away our F1 as if we'll be in the top 4 seems to be a lot more common that it should be.

If we can somehow get 8 for 14 & 20, then I’m only taking 2 picks to the draft and upgrading Murray with the ‘compulsory’ third pick.
This is my preference if we don't bring in Petty.

There was talk Geelong were open to splitting pick 8 as they don't have any other picks until late. 14 and 20 is fair value for pick 8, gives them a first rounder and early 2nd. I haven't heard much about this recently so not sure if this is still a possibility though. If it is we should be pushing hard for it.

Go into the draft with 8 and 10 and then upgrade Murray.

20 is a first rounder also

If we didn’t have Welsh I’d agree but I think we’ll end up having to match a bid anyway

It would still be worth more trading next year. Much better to wait and see where we finish. An extra draftee is not going to move the needle for us this year

Our F1 could be used to bring in a good experienced player - it could be a top 8 pick and in front of Welsh. Who knows

A third first round draftee is not going to play for us for a while - unlikely 3 kids break into the team at the same time

Let’s assume we get a Petty deal done, for pick 10 + McAdam.

We then only have 14 and 20.

Then we wait on draft night and see if one of those + F1 gets us up the order for a targeted player.

I can’t see us ever getting into the top 5 without letting a good young player go … which is a no from me.

So maybe we have to adjust our targets to suit ?
Tbh i'd rather try to get geelongs pick 7 using 14 and 20 and grab sanders assuming ge does not go top 6 of non- aligned players as he will slot straight into our midfield next year and thats where we need all the quality we can get

given our year, I reckon our first would be max valued around mid teens. But we're just as likely to plateau or go backwards with a couple of injuries or delayed return of those already hampered. My preference would be to trade up next year to get ahead of Welsh, or at least have the opportunity to do so. Or trade back if it looks like he's going earlier than we can get ahead of.

Don’t forget that they are expecting something decent back from out neighbours from Ratugolea 🤣. Likely the Cats will be seeing what they hold before looking to trade picks, and maybe even wait until draft night?

We’re all keen to see these picks change hands, but unless you are banking points for an academy or father son selection, or need a pick in a range to make a trade go through, why would clubs trade picks now?

Geelong aren’t looking to trade anyone in that I’m aware of, so there’s no pressure on them to part with anything during trade period.

Think they’re always looking for opportunity. They might see a bunch of players between 15 and 25 that they like equally and would consider swapping 1 sub-10 for 3 in that range. And they’re not all the same in terms of judgements or list situations, so won’t all react the same to opportunity.

We will get some sort of F2 pick for McAdam as well.
Dees offering their F2. There are already 20 picks in the first round next year, Dees likely top 4 and flag chances so that pick becomes 36-38 before all the FA compo's of Band 1, 2, 3 that will push it out. Given the shambles that is the AFL draft, basically Dees F2 is almost a nothing pick nowadays

If it ends up future picks, then we could put the foot down and say their F2 + Sydney F2 they have for McAdam + our F3 - I'd rather 2 F2's next year regardless if they are 30's picks as its great points OR if the draft is as deep as they are spitballing, they might be valuable picks to draft good a good player on top of some points for a welsh bid

Let's hope they hold out for something like that. Not much to lose.

Just imagine if we could broker a deal that included four first rounders (10,14,20 this year) and 2024F1 and McAdam for Petty and Oliver…..

Would give the Dees plenty of capital to try for No 1 this year and Reid.

It’s nice to dream.

Good chance imo that the cats pick goes to NM and then into WC in a trade for pick 1

15 + 17/18 trumps us slightly (14 + 20)

Leaves NM with 2, 3, 8, 17/18 and future 1st in their deck.

Given that I’d say if they keep them that’s better for them, and WC would be more tempted by a deal including 8 than 2 late teens

The obvious play then would be 2 + 8 + f1 for 1 + f2..still a massive price to pay. BUT they would hit THIS draft with 1, 3 and 17..Reid, McKercher and a tall at 17. Worry about next year then when it happens.

Imagine how good that midfield and flank areas will end up being..LDU, Wardlaw, Sheezel, Reid, McKercher, Thomas + ....

Yep

With the pure number of 1st rounded they are bringing in (incl2+3 last year) the quantity they have now is somewhat excessive. Better to consolidate for maximal quality

They’ll have too many to get games into otherwise!

Won’t North get Reid at 2 anyway.

Will Phillips, Powell, Jyi Simpkin ...

If anything, they're starting to get too many midfielders and smalls.

I wouldn't take McKercher, and instead grab someone who offers something different.

There is the rub..will they or won't they. What price to take that uncertainty away?
Isn't there less than zero chance that WCE, if they hold pick 1, won't take the clearly best player in Reid?

Only one who comes close to him is Walter, and he's also unavailable.

West Coast just don't lose players back to Victoria so I think they keep it unless they get a spectacular package.

You’d think if west coast weren’t taking Reid at pick one they’d be banging down north’s door, if nothing was coming to them.
Their only issue is if they can’t get curtain by doing a pick trade, it makes it awkward for them.

WC are unlucky that there don't seem very many stand out WA kids this year - what are there, they can probably pick up with later picks.

They may as well take Harley so they either get a gun player sticking around for a while, or one they could trade for a good return down the track (hopefully Reid's not a bust).
