Do you have a link to the article? I can't find anything on Google or the AFL website. Not doubting you, just trying to find the article you referenced.
From the article below:

"For instance, it would have allowed Adelaide to list one of Rory Sloane or Taylor Walker as a veteran for 2024 and opened up another spot on their primary list. The idea was designed to keep veterans in the game without sacrificing a list spot that a youngster may have taken, with the veteran’s full payments still counted in the salary cap."

There's a link in the post above

Salary didn't appear to be an issue with McAdam - they simply didn't see a need to retain him, other than on the lowest of base salaries. His problems appear to stem from a refusal to do the work that Burgess demanded, to improve his fitness. That, and the fact that he was frequently unavailable due to injury, and inconsistent when he did play (sometimes very good, sometimes barely seen). With Pedlar, Rachelle, and Rankine, plus the lesser lights of Murphy & McHenry, his absence from our forward line was rarely missed. His inability/unwillingness to do the fitness work, failing to meet club/team expectations, is probably what put the final nail in his coffin - now he can go and train lazily at another club.
I don't think McAdam ever appeared unfit or unable to perform because of fitness.

I half suspect that's a rumour that has no basis in reality.

Am I correct in saying that Patton and Sanchez are the only U18 AA boys eligible this year that weren't taken in the main draft? Both would be worth a punt over Borlase for mine.

It’s confusing isn’t it. We never had to guarantee Borlase a contract at all, could have told him we will see how we go before deciding if we redraft him. If someone else was there that we rated, we’d take them instead

Given the depth of the draft (or lack thereof), they clearly though that there wouldn't be anyone of interest left by the time the RD arrived.

That's missing the key part of the problem.

Adelaide has effectively lost three options in its KPD depth chart for 2024 in Murray (ACL - should be available late '24), McAsey (Ret.) and Doedee (FA). We also know we were only one injury away in that scenario from Borlase getting games last year and we also know injuries/attrition will happen. At some point in this list management cycle, we had to shore up that part of the depth chart with a ready-made-KPD if we are serious about getting into finals, and we should be serious.

If Murray was fit, we delist Borlase without a second thought. He isn't and retaining cover is therefore prudent - we also get our cake as well as we can now discard Borlase when Murray is fit.

edit: three, not two.

Problem is we didn’t give ourselves an option, if by draft night we had an inkling that we could get Curtin. May not need Borlase at all as well as keeping Himmelberg as well.
Why lock yourself in when you can have an option

We only got that "inkling" that Curtin was available a few days before the draft - but after the final List Lodgement date, when players could be delisted. The Curtin information came too late to be useful, as far as Borlase & Himmelberg were concerned.

Not giving ourselves an option here does not matter at all, because we needed someone like Borlase from this draft. Our KPD depth chart got wiped out - there was a third one in McAsey (ret.). Curtin doesn't fix that, considering much we lost. If you're going depth, it's better to keep the guy who knows your system then plucking a state leaguer to fill the void for a year.

Even mentioning Himmelberg as an option is indicative of how desperate we are here and we've talked about that despite knowing we'll retain Borlase. Burgess is another body as well that we added, but even then, he's someone we're hopeful can be a defender at the pro level for 2-3 games more so than is - on top of potentially getting sucked into our forward line if we start to rack up injuries there.

Doedee isnt a KPD though..

And we saw this on several occassions when they stupidly went in with 1 KPD and tried to use Doedee as their second KPD..

And he got comprehensively smashed by the opponent KPF every time.

Losing Doedee is no biggy.. we have worrell, MM, hinge, burgess and now even Curtin who can all play that 3rd defender/interceptor role in defence that doedee used to..

Some of them can do it even better.

Hell.. I’d even say Nank could do it.

Doesn't matter if he is or isn't. We know he was on the depth chart for it, as much as it was a sacrificial switch.

I do agree, it's no biggy on a best 22 sense because of Worrell. It does put stress on this sector though because that is one injury replacement gone.

We have enough key post defenders - Butts, Worrell, Keane and Borlase with Curtin coming in to maybe also fill in if needed. The 3rd man intercept can also be played by Hinge, Worrell, Curtin. More than happy that Doedee has headed on to different pastures as we are well covered in terms of medium and tall defenders and Murray to come back

Probably the worst poster to grace our board.
Just embarrassing
That honour goes to Red Mist. Thats saying something to given the number of trolls we can have on here.

While Alex is no prize, you could least attribute his shortfall down to mental health issues.

Red Mist played a cruel calculated manipulative deceitful role in manipulating this entire board into believing Alex had died.

Yeah forgot red mist.
Was partial to sending alcohol fueled late night abuse through pms for no reason.
However Subaru was just plain embarrassing as a crows supporter.

18 clubs disagree with that though

We did enter the off season hoping to not get younger - which we failed at - so that would have assisted retaining Borlase over a similar draftee type option in Patton
