Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

I understand the threat of PSD BUT a pick in the 30s can get you someone like a Tom Emmett or Frederick or Switta or Shultz or Cox or Ryan or… should I go on?

There’s AFL quality guys throughout the draft.

The threat is usually never an issue and unless Henry has done things wrong it won’t even be in discussions.

Just take the pick and back ourselves to grab something of use.
I completely agree because in this draft there is a lot of back end talent. It's not about that though, it's about breaking the trend of bending over for Collin and other teams. We suck at extracting maximum value for players that are leaving. We deserve maximum compo because Henry is best 22 and will grow further.

Like 4/6 of those names were past our pick 52 or 58 anyway, meaning we could let Henry walk

In what world does any club not wet their pants laughing at this?
In terms of valuation? Not quite as crazy as it sounds depending on where we finish next season. Values Henry at late 1st/early 2nd range, which I don't think is a million miles away. May need to chuck in a pick or 2 to sweeten the pot.

Gold Coast are about to trade their #4 pick, and if they were offered our F1 and Henry for it they'll counter offer, but they're not hanging up the phone just yet. Probably would want our North pick 21 for the points and maybe a later pick, and throw in Sharp the other way.

However, to your point, Hawks are in a totally different situation: young list, looking for quality over quantity. You'd have to give them a kings ransom for that #3 pick.

Nah, it's crazy. There is absolutely no reason for Hawks to trade their first for our future 1st

That's why I separated "objective" value vs motive. Gold Coasts pick 4 is not significantly less objectively valuable than Hawks pick 3, but you could get Gold Coasts for a "fair" price in the right circs, and Henry + F1 could be the starting point (if he wanted to go Gold Coast, which he doesn't).

You can't get Hawthorns pick 3 for "fair" value.

I would think Henry is worth roughly what we paid for Jordan Clark which was 2 x 2nd rounds from memory? Clark was first round pick and in and out of team. Henry’s end of season form is probably better than Clark’s at Geelong. Whereas Clark probably had a better 3 years overall.
Exactly my thoughts.

Jordan Clark was traded to Fremantle for pick #22 and a future 3rd round pick. Let's all agree to collectively forget that he was contracted, and if we do remember that we balance it against his lack of games played compared to Liam Henry being a feature in the side for the second half of the year.

They get Henry also.
Yeah but when you get that high, it doesnt matter, Henry becomes steak knives so the question becomes "do Hawks want to trade out a guaranteed top 5 pick" for best case scenario pick 4 worst case scenario a pick in the teens next year". Like, you would struggle to move from pick 9 to 8 with Henry, just how it works

Sharp might cost us a pick with only two digits in it, but barely. Just because they paid pick #11 for him (trading it for pick #27) doesn't mean a thing when he is not getting a game.

He's about two weeks older than Liam Henry, a bigger body. Will probably cost a quarter of the price to sign Liam and nothing in draft capital.

The potential to consider it a massive upgrade factoring in the low 20s pick for Henry is massive as Jeremy Sharp has a decent forward game too, with the downside risk equal to the value of a list spot.

My expectations will be low and easily met, comfortably exceeded during 2024.

What do we get from a guy who hasn’t been able to get a game for a bottom 4 team for the past two seasons?
We turned a vfl/wafl Acres into a decent winger.

Henry was at Peel for 90% of his extremely average career.

I think Sharp has the potential to be a decent player for us. Not a star, but a solid best 22 player.

In fact, vice versa, why would clubs give up a decent pick for an out of contract, spent most of his career being fringe 22 Henry, when he plays for the bottom 5 team?

We can lock in sharp. He’s coming.

I’m guessing the club are 100% positive Henry is gone then.
We don’t really have the list spots available to get Sharp if Henry stays.
Not that this is of any great surprise, you’d think Henry would have announced by now if he was staying.

Considering he was 1/4 of the Tim Kelly trade and we could rub WC's nose in it if he turned it around. I'm all for it.

It won’t come as a surprise to anyone here, but the club believes a certain manager is waging a vendetta against the club, and trying to push Henry out the door. Especially after one of our high profile people quit his stable.

It wasn’t about the exact pick as such. More that talent can clearly be found at our after a hypothetical pick 30 for Henry… as evidenced.

But I get your point that we can easily attain picks from 30+ onwards easily and that getting that for Henry is an insult and we may as well make him sweat.

I really don’t see it happening. I think the club is bigger than the individual and we would be respectful enough to Grant him his desire.

I definitely agreed with Gold Coast walking Martin through PSD because they were legit being offered unders in a draft where they already had excess early picks.

We don’t have that luxury and pick ~ 30 becomes our next pick in the draft.

In other words… it’s relevant.

If Heath Chapman and Matt Johnson could **** him off as well it'd be nice.
