Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

It that’s truly the case then all I can say is I’m disappointed but not surprised.

Like you’d have to not know so many basic things about AFL list management to actually get that all wrong.

They’ll be enough room to give Hamling another contract, trade in Sharp and take three picks in the National Draft. That’s unless the Worst thinks Colyer or Wilson get another contract.

I’m a bit confused by this as well. I think with having to upgrade Banners and Treacy and having to take at least 3 picks in the draft we need 5 list spots (or 6 if you include Sharp). With Henry leaving and Wilson, Colyer and Benning de-listed that gives us only 4 spots. Does anyone know if we can downgrade other existing players to Rookies or do we have to delist another two players??

Let's make the case for Henry to St Kilda.

Silvani likes Henry. Silvani also really liked Stocker. Silvani picked up Stocker from Carlton as soon as he could.

Silvani will also pick up Henry.

I don't know if he really liked Henry he was just pissed that we jumped ahead of Carlton to pick Young & Serong so it was a bit of pay back knowing we would match & time wasting while he moved down the order.

Sucked in for them because while he stuffed around he missed out on Pickett, Will Day, Bergman, Weightman

So did we!!

So Wilson, Colyer, Benning and Henry all gone - there's our required four places. With Treacy and Banfield upgraded from Rookie list, we would have two live picks. I wonder if anybody else is gone?

We have to make at least 3 picks

Jesus going and watching Colin Young on Show Me the Money is hard.

This whole Rory Lobb scenario is a trainwreck to watch.

Stephen O'Reilly, Ben Allen, Chad Warner... just don't mention Kerr...

The 2 upgrades can be used as 2 of the 3 picks. 1 of the 3 must be an actual pick on draft night though

Also if we want to downgrade a player we need to delist and re rookie. The clubs want that changed.

Also there is talk that there will be one player allowed on a veterans list. Might be coming in this year.

Wrong. We have 3 genuine KF's on the list (Amiss, Treacy and Taberner). The others are rucks, ruck/forwards or defenders.
It’s the right mix.
Almost every team is cooked if their no1 forward goes down to be fair.
No.
Sydney are in the finals with depth of Amartey, McLean, McDonald with Buddy injured.

Melbourne have McDonald, Brown, JVR, Tomlinson, Joel Smith, Petty.
Depth in that area is so important for finals.
some people commenting under the article that he is not good off the ball and Zero defensively
That’s true. He’s horrible once the ball hits the floor.

Would much rather Chris Burgess.

New players are barely going to get a game if we're playing well. Only the mature age recruits are going to impact and only if there are injuries do they get opportunity unless we jag another Barlow.
I'm not claiming my desires are rational. I just want new players.

Counter point - they slipped from 2nd to 7th because Buddy went from a 50 goal forward to no better than Joel Amartey this year. Buddy is cooked.

Know we have a no dhead policy but Tarryn Thomas for Henry? TT had a great finish to the season, ironically a roos nga pick, can play a wing and adds some height at 190

I was a huge advocate for his talent and made comment last year about attracting him. His off field stuff would be too extreme. When focussed on footy he’s an absolute elite player.

He’d still cost a lot in terms of actual wage and trade.

Him on a wing, pace out of midfield and hitting the scoreboard would catapult us for sure.

But we’d have zero interest plus he wouldn’t come here.

Is that you Gerard Neesham?!

Fremantle should know better than anyone that neglecting the draft hurts the club long term. That’s what Neesham did from 95-99, having no respect for national draft picks and often selecting mature age WAFL players which in hindsight was an extraordinary blunder.

If you finish 14th and can’t get rid of the worst 5 or 6 players on your list out of a total of 43 or 44 players, so that some new young talent from the 2023 draft class can be brought into the club with an eye to the future, well then you are probably overrating the fringe players on your list.

If you finish 14th and most of the positions on your team are filled with young talent developing then there isn't a huge amount of room.

Personally, out of the side that played Hawthorn, I think the positions that would be upgraded by drafting a new player were: Worner, Wagner.... the rest seem fine or project fine for that spot.

And Wagner has shown he has it. That's before I try and fit back in Darcy, Fyfe, O'Meara, O'Driscoll, Stanley, Erasmus, Tabs, Chapman etc.

We are drafting to replace guys who are depth players, adding something different hopefully to what we have so that there's some option or competition for spots.

I would like us to find a player who can be an elite kick somewhere, either half back to half forward and in between. Jayden Pitt would be ideal to still have on the team, just setting up ball movement from half back off both feet. Valente was another who could do that. Actually, maybe we avoid that type..

Something to consider.

Brayshaw has his best year, we make finals.

Brayshaw has a rough year. Miss finals.

Players had it right voting him as MVP 😋

Well I disagree with this but I think I’ve made that clear enough over the season here. Do you think 90 or 95% of the first Fremantle flag winning team is currently in the list? I’m not so convinced. I thi k we need more A graders. At least one, probably two as Walters will be gone soon.
I listened to Xavier Ellis in the HBG podcast last night. I think he’s a good WA antidote to the natural bias we all have when looking at our list.
He said that he thinks the best midfielder on Fremantles future flag team is not yet on their list. Reckons we lack a burst mid with speed out of stoppages.
Nick Rynne asked him to name three teams outside the 8 that could make finals next year - freo were not one of Xavier Ellis three. He’s also stated recently that he would take Sydney list a long way ahead of ours right now. It might be a bit harsh but there’s probably some merit to what he is saying.

To sum it up, I like our list, but I think it’s good not great.
There’s only two ways we can add great players
  • trade them in like we did with LJ last year. Obviously expensive and can’t be done too often.
  • draft them. clearly top 10 or 15 picks are more likely to become stars but it’s possibly to get quality talent late in the draft. Even if it’s a lower chance.

The more dips you have into the ND, the better chance freo has of grabbing a gem. It might be a small chance but it’s better than no chance.

The issue I have with low list turnover is that you are further reducing the (admittedly small chance) of getting another A grader from the late stages of the draft. I like Hamling for example. But he will probably play all year at peel next year. He might play 3 or 4 AFL games. He will probably be delisted in 2024.
Keeping him probably means we take 2 live picks in the ND instead of 3 because Banfield and Treacy need to be added to the main list and Sharp is also apparently coming to replace Henry.
We will likely end up passing on a pick around 42-45 in that instance, on draft night, in favour of keeping Hamling.
That could easily be a player like Koen Sanchez, Ashton Moir, De Mattia, Clay Hall etc. possibly even Mitch edwards!
they question that needs to be asked is - who is better for the Fremantle list Beth in 2024, and long term. A player such as the ones I listed above, or Joel Hamling?
There is zero percent chance joel hamling solves our lack of A grader problem in the mid-forward area of the ground. There is probably a 5% chance that pick 45 does. But 5% is a lot better than zero.

As I said before though it’s tricky for Hamling because it should have been Corbett, Banfield, Kuek, that could all have been delisted before him but they are all contracted for 2024 (lucky for them) and so Joel is the unlucky one that is sweating on his list spot.
