Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

... that I would expect any WAFL/VFL midfielder wanting an AFL career with a rubbish hard role to take with both hands and contribute adequately enough.

The special traits of size, speed and silky skills or movement can make them game breaking players but I think the role of covering space and offering an option for a defense desperate to kick to a mark can be filled reasonably easily.
The question is whether adequately enough is actually enough. Tank and willingness are prerequisites for the role, sure, but there's maybe a mental side as well: not least of all concentration, but also understanding of positioning, read of play ... the je ne sais pas that makes up "footy IQ".

I appreciate the (unstated) point that, in terms of strategic use of resources (draft picks, salary cap), you'd want to be careful about investing too much into that part of the ground, but surely there's a point at which the on-field costs to taking the view that just any old state-level midfielder will do (Bewley?) begin to outweigh the football operations savings?

To put it another way, when it's mid season and you need to plug the hole, using Hughes is fine, but when you're entering off-season and you have wing-shaped hole in your list, it would be remiss not to think about whether you can fill it with someone who'd contribute a little more than adequately.

I agree, but I'm not sure the return on investment is as good for a wing position. If that player was our best player, never missed a kick and basically every time he touched the ball we scored - that guy is getting tagged and it cost a top five pick to get him but they are using a workman effort player to take him out.

That sort of outcome is far more likely with outside players.

Can't agree enough. A great winger will run run all day defensively to fill space, maybe he stops 2, 3 or 4 D50 transitions from the oppo before they happen. Equally they run run all day offensively as well to support attacks that might otherwise not have resulted in a i50. Preferably they are big enough to impact or split a contest when they have to. Across a season it'll win you extra games.
I don't we appreciated Acres enough for doing exactly what you've said on this post. His kicking wasn't perfect but what player doesn't have a weakness or two?

At times he covered the ground so well he was almost able to be a spare tall defender in the back fifty. Kicked some goals too which we've really missed from the mids this year.

AFL are bringing out four Irishmen to the combine.

This got me thinking - what happened to the Irish guy we were going to rookie but he got injured and went home? Wasn't he coming back?

Reminds me of the joke - Four Irishmen walk into a combine…

I forget how it goes, but something about Freo and popping collars was the punchline.

If Henry goes to St Kilda would a swap with Coffield be possible?
Like Henry, he was a high draft pick, who has battled injury & form, but has also shown glimpses.
Half-back who could rotate with Chapman in a wing, perhaps.
I know he is a Vic fella, but if you don't ask ......

Would honestly be a candidate to get delisted.

My gut feel is that Ultan didn't reveal the full extent of his injury prior to the club announcing the signing.

"Such is his form in a new role as an inside forward, the spectre of Fremantle coming back for him is, [Fermanagh selector Fergal] Quinn admits, “always on the table”."

I wonder if that's actual insight or just Quinn kinda talking out his ass. Seems like we might still be monitoring him, but we at the very least needed him to show something in 2023.
Ultan Kelm had a super season for Fermanagh in 2023. He’s lightning quick, real prototype of the modern top level Gaelic footballer with great running ability and good explosiveness.
I’m not sure if we would have another look at him this year but his fitness has not been a concern this season.
Pretty sure we can have up to 3 Cat B rookies though.

Pre COVID I reckon. I think they cut it to two and it's still two.

It’s definitely two Category B rookies at the moment.

What some clubs have done is move players from the Category B rookie list to Category A but they’ve only ever technically had two Category B rookies at once.

I think we should be adding some more mature age talent. We continue to have success with it and can fill holes in areas that need a fix. Hopefully grab a couple with a few latter picks again this draft day

Who would you take as a mature age player that fits what perceived hole?

Personally I would rather back in recycling AFL players that get cut / would otherwise get cut from clubs - there is just more AFL relevant talent in that basket and greater potential for something relevant to fall out. Eg. as much as I think people on this board severely underrate his faults, bringing in Jeremy Sharp (either via a late pick trade or just waiting for the delisting) would be much more useful than any potential mature ager I can think of in a state league.

What about Xavier Duursma from the Power?

We’d play him as a big bodied mid though. Well I would
One problem we have right now is we have too many "big bodied mids". Brodie, Johnson, Erasmus, O'meara, Fyfe.

We need games into Ras and Johnno, Brodie isn't in JL's cool gang, Fyfe is not a forwards A-hole so need to play mid. O'meara is on a good contract but fast running out of places we can play him (been played mid, forward and back).

We dont need anymore big bodied mids. Need to develop the younger ones we have, and find a decent winger or two.

"Sam Mitchell has emerged as Hawthorn’s secret weapon as a recruiting tool in coming seasons as Liam Henry moves towards nominating the Hawks as his club of choice....Hawthorn won’t want to give up a pick in the 15-25 range the Dockers are asking for, so get set for some prolonged haggling."

Stuff him then - send him to the pre-season draft so north can have him
