Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

They don’t have Walls?
It's pretty universal though, look at the AA defenders every year. Clubs really should be drafting more KPDs, they are very cheap to draft and develop and unlike rucks, they only seem to increase in value if traded

What do you think it is then, they can’t be bothered developing their own and go for the quick fix by trading in proven talent?

Yeah I honestly dont know, maybe these guys just keep ****ing it up and not prioritising them? Maybe for all the ones we see go late that become stars we ignore the ones draft and delisted?

Rucks, I get, it's a discussion on how valuable they are and wasting 6 years to get them close to AFL ready could be seen as a waste when you get them very cheap off some teams bench.

Disagree.

Both have played a handful of good games at AFL level but the average game from Corbett is better than Schache.

If Schache wasn't a top 5 pick he'd be running around in the ammos by now. He's an absolute hack.
Was a fan of his before, but now he’s clearly a hack.
Doesn’t want to improve or bulk up it seems .
Corbett is okay, just the wrong height.

I already said all of Schache, Brown and McDonald are out of contract next year and will be lucky to continue their careers beyond that. Even the guys playing in a final. A year is a very long time in footy.

All of those three, as with Taberner, will be seeking to extend their football lives beyond 2024 and Melbourne will see what they can get for them (as we will with Taberner) this year while they are in contract.
Yep and doubt they’d give schache a new deal if they were in for another tall

I think they assume failed key forwards can be repurposed. Hence why pick the possibly less talented key back when a key forward is available.

Went a step further because I’m bored:

Sam Taylor - pick 28
Harris Andrews - pick 61
Tom Stuart - pick 40
Jeremy McGovern - Rookie
Aliir Aliir - pick 44
Callum Wilkie - Rookie
Tom McCartin - pick 33
Liam Jones - pick 32

Although there are some outliers such as Melbourne forking out a bit of draft capital to bring in May/Lever and Carlton using pick 1 on Weitering

I'd like Curtain but only because I see most every other part of the ground covered and he reminds a lot of Pav with the way he moves but my hill to die on for a long time has been basically never ever ever use a top 10 pick on a KPD. It is almost always a complete and utter waste of capital

Still can't for the life of me understand how a guy who's played 80 games in 8 years gets pick 3 as a compo.
The point you didn't make is he's just an okay defender even when he does play.

If this were a trade I doubt he even fetches a second rounder tbh.

Still telling myself it won't happen. Given Norths ladder position second rounder is actually overs.

Corbett's problem are a lack of height and mobility.

His football ability isn't too bad. When I say mobility I mean his ability to change direction etc. - his top running speed and endurance ain't too bad.

I'm pretty convinced you can turn any random 194cm+ guy into a decent key defender
This guy is 195cm...

Griffin Logue. Only reason why I thought we picked him that high was because we thought he could play another position (big bodied mid or key forward)... then we played him forward for like 1 game in 2017 and kept him as a defender ever since until the last half of last year by which point he's already decided he wants to be a full time defender and is already looking to leave.

What a waste of time and draft capital.

Him and Henry picked in the top 10 asking for trades.
Definite waste

Gonna bust out my Sherlock Holmes getup for this one: I think when you combine this

with this

then there's no way it's DGB. It probably has to be someone where there's ambiguity about whether they're a big name or not.

With DGB there's 0 ambiguity: he's not a big name at all (well unless we're talking literal name length). With Logan there's some ambiguity: he's not close to being an elite tall fwd yet obviously, but he's been groomed for that Buddy replacement role, is kinda a key player in a finals team and has shown signs that he can be 1 of the next elite tall fwds (tho equally could be the next Eric Hipwood, who reached the level of "AFL quality tall fwd" fairly quickly then plateaued).

There aren’t many players with a bigger name than Allan as Freo supporters where the player isnt a big name and taken at a high pick.

My pick is we are chasing Ed Allan
