Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

All the players mentioned above are twice as quick as Erasmus though

If we put Erasmus in a race with JOM who is 30 and had 2 knee recos JOM would beat him

I wouldn't be surprised if Reidy beat Erasmus for pace tbh

The game has evolved and you need to be able to run nowadays

The negatives you post on Erasmus are completely overblown. He's not super skilled nor quick, but it is nowhere near as bad as you make out. Just because he is not another Danger, Dusty, De Goey, doesn't mean he is useless.

Players like Taranto, Dunkley, Barlow, Crowley, Cripps, Kennedy, Fyfe and a horde of other players are big inside mids that have similar average pace (but elite tanks ... Erasmus was blitzing our 1km time trials), average skills (but still managed to kick goals), and many with top tackling ability.

I've posted the stats before comparing him with Taranto and Dunkley at the same stage of their careers, and Erasmus is tracking just fine in comparison. Whether he gets to their current level is another story, but you are writing him off way too early.

Winning is good for all sorts of reasons. Knowing you can win is almost a prerequisite for being able to win.

I reckon Erasmus has crazy good reflexes in tight. He's the sort of inside player that gets the ball through speed and strength, not anticipation necessarily. He'll rip it off you. He'll chop off handpasses. He's all fast twitch response.

He's also aggressive in the right way. (I think Johnson is aggressive in the wrong way but that's a whole other thing.) He's getting stronger before he gets bigger and soon his attack on the ball or the ball-carrier will be like a pissed-off salty.

I'm backing him in.

Anyone got some Erasmus info from time trials or combine?

He genuinely does seem slower than a ruckman to me unfortunately

It's immediately noticeable when all players spread from a contest and he is left in their dust, or when he is shit down quickly due to being so slow

Amen.

He's a slow burn, but I'll be warming my hands on the bonfire he'll become.

I see a bit of Kennedy, and a bit of Cripps in him. I also liked the Dane Swan comparison...if he can develop dome explosiveness in those first couple of steps, we're really going to have a player on our hands.

I'm not too fussed with the disposal. He's never going to be silk, but once the speed of the game is second nature to him and he understands his own game better, the disposal issue should be ok.

There's a real possibility that the Erasmus/Johnson one, two punch will be a nightmare for opposing teams...and we get to watch it play out over the next 10 years.

I wanna say that he was injured for the combine given the lack of stats in his profile (Neil Erasmus) and the fact he missed the SA vs WA match through injury, which was just before the combine in 2021. He's always shown up well in 1km and 2km runs and I don't think that happens without at least good sprint speed (combined with top endurance), but he's probably a "slow off the burst" type.

Unfortunately for him, in the stoppages acceleration is way more important than sprint speed or stamina. Fortunately for him, acceleration seems a lot easier to improve than sprint speed.

The thing is don’t get with Erasmus, is why they didn’t give him an extended run playing fwd/mid ie in a Mitch Owens like role. Especially in the second half of the year.

I think you can make the case he’s going to have a very hard time breaking into the side as a pure midfielder given those who are ahead of him. Feel like that fwd/mid role would be ideal right at the moment.

Too slow to apply any pressure as a forward you'd think

We had Sturt waiting to get a game who needed to be in the team too (as evidenced by his finish to the season)

Erasmus came back to the club for preseason with a spot in the side available for an outside runner, blowing away the time trials and literally wiping himself out. He came back to run, he wanted that spot at AFL level. We didn't have the spot in the midfield stoppages, but he would get a look in occasionally by playing on the wing.

Now, I would argue we have a spot in the stoppages. I think our stoppage group is going to get a big shake up this off season. He needs to come back built like a gorilla and ready to mix it with the biggest bodies in the league as the first hands on the ball.

Yep, he needs to be THE inside mid and allow Brayshaw/Serong/Johnson/JOM to receive the ball instead of getting trapped inside.

Are you trying to find the next scapegoat now that Henry is leaving?

Erasmus is an elite endurance runner so the problem is not necessarily his pace per se' but the overall pace in the midfield. We need to add some pace around there. Having Freddie on the wing certainly helps. Switta in the midfield also helps. Johnson has goodish pace. Young isn't quick but has a bit of explosiveness away from the stoppage. Brayshaw could add some speed on the outside. We just need to get the mix right.

I've always defended Henry on here

So youre barking up the wrong tree with that

I'm just going on what I see at AFL and wafl level, the kind of attributes that players have, just quietly I'm also worried about noddy

Hamish Brayshaw. Was Freo interested in his draft year? Whats the mock on him? pros and cons

Sam Mitchell said it best when he described Hammer as the sort of guy who doesn't bring weapons to the table so he has to work extra hard to make it. Mitchell was lumping himself into that same group at the time.

Not fast, not a gun kick, not big. A good honest worker.

Probably a bit slow.

Must have a good character because Eagles have kept him on employed by the club.

Must be something if Eagles had him on their rookie list for a couple of years and plenty of exposed form at the WAFL

Saw him playing a couple of AFL games for the eagles.
Just too slow. Miles off it - your perfect WAFL player as he’s pretty good at everything at that level, but at the elite level he wasn’t really good at anything.

He’s not yet 20, he’s still learning the game & understanding the pace of AFL footy.
But, he is working hard on his burst speed & running to the right spots, where from all reports he has definitely improved. They are aware of his deficiencies.

I get it, you're not a fan of Erasmus, but this is just bullshit

If lists were 50+ players I reckon Hamish would be on one tbh.

ATM clubs try to have a main core squad of 28-30 players and the rest of the list for development.

Feel like it's the depth players that play less than ten games a season that were lost to the system when list sizes went down. Some of these types would come back if the AFL increased list sizes again but Hamish would probably need a pretty big increase to get a look in (50 is +6-8 for most lists)
