Background

Carlton v GWS Giants. There is not a lot of history between these two, but what there is makes interesting reading. Fourteen matches overall, with Carlton having 5 wins and GWS having 9. Carlton won the first two encounters in the Giants inaugural seasons (2012-13), when they were barely even VFL standard. And Carlton won the two games last year. In the nine intervening years, Carlton managed just one solitary win, and that by just one solitary point.

One quirky little factor is that we do very poorly in the 2nd quarter against them. We have only won the second quarter twice, in 2013 by 18 and in 2017 by a point.

2022 encounters

Both games last year were significant.

In Round 9 we travelled to Giants Stadium in what was an emotional day for the Giants (and Supercoach players) - Leon Cameron's last match. The Blues kicked the first goal via Corey Durdin, and were never headed, running out 30 point winners. Sam Walsh, Doc and Adam Saad were amongst the Blues best, while Josh Kelly, Toby Greene and Tom Green performed strongly for the orange team. Our win took us to 7-2 for the season and put us in the top 4.

Early on we lost Zac Williams to an achilles injury. He has only played one game since.

Although the Giants got close on a few occasions - they were even at the half and only a goal down at 3QT - the win never seemed in doubt.

Oh yeah, and we lost the 2nd Quarter.

In Round 19 the Giants came to Marvel, and we had another good win. This one was our 12th win for the season, meaning we needed to win only one more game out of the last four to make the finals. Yeah right. It also remains the last time we have won a game of mens AFL football before tonight.

The first half was pretty even, we were a whisker behind at the main break.

Who can remember this pearler? It was even better live.

Early in Q3 both Walsh and Weitering went down, and both looked pretty bad. But remarkably they both came back and played major roles in a powerful Blues 2nd half revival.

Walsh spent 11 minutes on the bench during the third term yet was “still far and away the best player” for the quarter, according to Jason Dunstall, who added: “That Sam Walsh third quarter – that’s something to behold, seriously.”

What's happened this year?

As we all know, in Round 1 the Blues played pretty poorly and walked away with a frustrating draw. Were we off that night or was the Tigers' pressure the cause? Still too early to say.

And we all saw what happened in Round 2 against the reigning premiers. Thaaaaaat's better lads!

But what of GWS?

GWS v Adelaide Round 1

In Round 1 they chalked up a very gutsy win against the Crows in 35 degree heat despite a tonne of injuries. Yod' have to say it was pretty impressive, regardless of the quality of the opposition.

Here's how Fox Sports reported it:

"For someone closing in on 200 games, Toby Greene’s words in the immediate aftermath of Sunday’s win say it all.
“It’s definitely the hardest win I’ve ever had,” he told Alastair Lynch on Fox Footy.
“That was the hardest game of footy I’ve ever played, hands down.
“Good effort. We had seven or eight cramping bad in the last quarter. Just to find a way, it’s a special win.”
Indeed, ‘special’ was probably the best way to describe what took place at Giants Stadium.
The Giants could hardly have been worse in the opening quarter or so, with the Crows’ game-high, 31-point lead not reflective of the dominance they enjoyed.
A comeback on its own is impressive, but with the Giants decimated by injury throughout the match, it was a win of immense character under new coach Adam Kingsley.
“It’s a special win,” David King said on Fox Footy.
“They lost Perryman five minutes into the match, they lost Whitfield early in the third, Kelly start of the last, Haynes is out there but he can’t move and they’ve run the Crows into the ground.
“Their first half was poor, their second half they’ll build on.
“Adam Kingsley will love this sort of victory. You can tap into this at any time when you’re struggling. These are the sorts of victories that build culture.”

How we beat the Giants!

We shouldn't need it, but the Blues will have two extra days' recovery and preparation for this one, with the Giants coming off a road trip to the Eagles the previous Sunday.

Carlton's midfield, with Hewett to return plus Cripps, Cerra, Kennedy, Ed and the other rotations should be too strong for GWS, even if TDK is shaded by the GWS ruck combination. We should be able to win more of the contested ball and generate more inside 50's than they do. As always we will need to take our chances. I see us scoring 85 points or more.

Our defence has been remarkably good for a long time, even in those late losses last season and certainly the two games so far this year. Does Cadman play? He's in for a tough night against Lewis if he does. We should be able to spoil, intercept, and rebound enough to keep the Giants to under 70 points. A rampaging Toby Greene is the main risk. Cutting off his supply is the best way to stop him.

Oh yeah, and let's win the 2nd quarter this time to make sure of it.

Much easier to look at the next opponent after a good win :D

I'm not too sure on their full injury risks, but no Kelly and Whitfield, balances out our injuries to Walsh and Williams.

We should go into this game with full confidence
Just have 23 fit players and come in with intensity & efforts

Let's chalk up our 2nd win, us by 23 points!

If he's good to go.

If so, Hewett for LOB (if we have a VFL game so he can get 4 quarters in).

Ed to sub role He will do whatever it takes for club to be successful. Would make the move at about 20 mins into third (unless injury forces move) so he gets a good quarter and a bit to impact game.

I don't envy anyone being dropped out of side or into sub role from tonight

Without Preuss id assume Pitt or Silvagni will be dropped for Hewett (More likely Silvagni as he was subbed out)

Also doubt LOB is sub 3rd week in a row. Maybe Jack Martin if fit for sub or a big like Silvagni/Pitt

Yeah, went off the AFL app and it didn't differentiate. I then changed the thread ownership to esoteric.
 
My couple of things to focus on.

Most importantly, our entry into forward 50. If we’d cleaned that up early, the game would’ve been out of reach at HT.

Shots on goal. Need to be more clinical and kick the goals more often. Got away with it tonight, won’t always be the case though.
