Just got around to watching the game properly. I think most of my observations have been covered. Just little extras:
  • Dow is definitely trying to step out of traffic and use that as his point of difference. It’s a big change over his past 12 months. Once it hurt him but I don’t mind. His defensive running is better. Intensity to tackle still not quite where I want it but a bit better. Very very good backup. Persist!
  • Kemp was terrific. If anything happens to MCG he is an auto in and a very good one. He’s afl ready now. Kicking has imrovoed. Decision making good. Marking great. He can’t fill in as a second tall so don’t ever hope for that. He’s never going to be strong enough body to body for that. But he’s very good.
  • Binns surprised me. I thought he was superb. His kicking is never going to be amazing but it was a lot better than it was preseason. Eveything else is good. I didn’t agree with the poster who said he neeed to add kilos. They wouldn’t hurt but his body is afl strong now. His running is ridiculously good. He is very hard at it. Hands very good. Wouldnt at all mind seeing him in the ones soon.

To me they were easily the most afl ready out there for us.
I'm glad to hear the reports on Dow, Kemp and Binns. I wonder what the future for Dow is, as he would have to displace someone from the side atm... But I am also wondering how Carroll and Honey are tracking... the bits I've seen of Honey, it seems he has a hint of X factor... but it also seems consistency is the key... has he displayed much of this yet, or is it still the recovery from injury?

I think by the halfway mark of the year (hopefully earlier) we will have a far better understanding of what Honey can produce for us provided he doesn’t have any injury setbacks again this year, there was enough highlights from his first year that suggested he had some exciting qualities as a deep/high pressure forward…
Continuity is the key atm, needs to get the endurance base at a better level also he needs to be more involved generally and find the ball some more, like the idea of giving him more stints through the midfield to help out improving these and other aspects that need improvement in his game…

Kemp I think is tracking as a Newman/Plowman replacement/upgrade. As Windows said, probably not the third tall type, I think he plays smaller than he is well but doesn't play taller than he is which is a requirement of the third tall to do. He probably doesn't have the smarts and tricks Newman has yet but if he can develop that, think a player who is a little taller, quicker that you can play on the medium sized forwards who can find plenty of the footy and use his pace to defend, apply pressure and run and carry. Probably what Cowan is developing as as well IMO. He can pinchhit as an emergency third tall, probably better than Plowman but long term it's not what we want.

IMO If Newman, McGovern or Cowan were to go down then Kemp comes straight in.

Binns as a small player playing wing not relying on athleticism and finding plenty of the ball, it reminds me a lot of what Sidebottom does. Just very very good footy smarts and the ability to be in the right place at the right time and having tricks to get lose all the time.

If you were a young aspiring wingman you would get tickets and go watch Sidebottom play live before he retires. Not the best wingman in the game but the smartest. Footy IQ looks to be Binns strength so we definitely work on developing and increasing that.

Honey is a player who probably is behind in his development and footy IQ. He is very good when he's at the contest and with the footy in his hands but doesn't get himself in prime position enough to get enough of it. You think about Silvagni who is much slower and not a super athlete who plays half forward and can keep finding space, getting lose and getting it. Honey may be a player who finds himself in another position later in the season because of this. That position could be defence or on ball, thought I don't know if his reading of the game equates to onball. As we have seen with Dow, you need to be more than a see ball get ball player to make it in a strong AFL team. Going to have to be patient with him to see how he develops.

Hopefully our VFL side gets some players back soon, we could do with Cuningham back and you would expect that some time in the next 3 weeks that Cottrell, Boyd, Durdin, Walsh, Hewett and Martin will all return to football. Maher getting injured really hurt us in this game as well so hopefully no more injuries and we start getting players back.

Want to see Carroll play a full game on the ball next week, not sure why we are playing him elsewhere more, probably for development but to me I think he's a pure mid. Definitely want to see Honey to half back tried at some stage but it's probably a bit early for that at this stage. He's a strong, powerful quick bloke who likes the physicality of the game so surely we can use that. I would also not be against giving Lemmy a run in defence at times as well, even if it's as that lose 5th defender. If we lose a tall defender this week at AFL level, with Durdin out, he's the next key position player on the list.

IF, we start getting players back, remain relatively healthy as a list, you could throw Gov forward again and bring Kemp in to play his role
I want Kempy in the ones as much as anyone, but suspect the match committee may use at least the first half of the year to settle and school him in more medium sized roles. We finally have genuine tall options in the reserves which should allow greater real development of Kemp than has been permitted in recent years.

I want his next iteration in the ones to be a permanent one, not the previous fill in jobs he has been afforded. Hope the youngster is not impatient as I believe he will be a very solid, or better player for a decade.

This. Make him absolutely smash the door down then back him in for atleast a couple of months

It’ll be interesting to see how the teams look this week, Plowman has been emergency the first 2 rounds as the backup defender, so until now he’s been next cab off the rank, we will get a line of sight on what the MC is thinking if he’s emergency this week or whether Kemp takes that spot.

Unlike McGovern, Kemp's skillset is heavily blunted playing as a medium defender. I really don't want to see it as a permanent thing.

20+ disposals from Kemp forward of the defensive 50 would be like gold for us, and he's hard to stop inside the stoppage.

Luckless Carlton midfielder David Cunningham (shoulder) has been named to make his latest comeback from injury, but the Blues have suffered a major blow with newly-appointed vice-captain Zavier Maher ruled out for the season with a knee injury and key defender Sam Durdin to miss with a hamstring.
=============
How/where did this happen, game or training?
Currently 15 listed CFC players.
T. Leiu at full forward…interesting, if so.

Good luck DC!

Injured his knee early against Cats, came back on after some treatment, not sure how much longer he lasted.
Can you play with an ACL injury, or did returning to the field magnify the earlier complaint?

Sometimes you can play while the injury is still warm. Lenny Hayes did a couple of years back.
