Sydney have re-built their list the other way to how we did it. We drafted KP first (Andrews, Hipwood, Schache etc) followed by mids/forwards (Rayner, Bailey, Berry, McCluggage, Starce etc) and then traded for blue chip later like Charlie, Neale etc.

Sydney has a solid young core coming through in midfield and utility but they are struggling with key position areas. McKay would be a good fit for them. I think they'll be going after the likes of McKay, Himmelberg and even Barass if Westcoast is happy to trade him.

Funnily enough I feel like it’s because of how both team’s academy prospects have worked out. We had the likes of Hippy and Andrews come through while their top prospects during that time were Heeney and Mills.

Sydney also had the likes of Buddy and Rampe who were very good compared to us having really no veteran talls post 2016 bar Stef.

Eagles should NOT be doing such a trade.

Devs out of contract, hasn’t been able to lock down a best 22 role in 4 seasons at the Lions.

Similar type trades have seen players move for late 3rd round picks.

We’d be lucky if we got the Eagles 3rd round pick. More likely we get Ports 3rd round pick that the Eagles hold.

Hope he stays, it feels like he's one season away from having a Payne-like breakout season.

Would like us to improve our draft hand this year. Looks like the opportunity for Dev to be starting mid for the eagles is too good to refuse. I’m assuming they are after him. I don’t think he will sign an extension. So without giving it much thought maybe give the eagles Dev, our future first and get an early second round pick back (plus a late pick for 2024 maybe).

I think Lohmann will go as well. So maybe use him to improve points for Ashcroft next year.

I’d like to keep both players but if they haven’t signed yet then I think it’s unlikely.
Why is it unlikely? both could back themselves in the Lions have looked better with youth in Lohmann Fletch and Robertson the last 2 weeks seem likely changes will happen to the older players at the end of the season all of Rich Gunners Zorko and Adams seem likely to retire

Not sure why he would leave Adelaide?
Maybe just to drive up his contract price at Adelaide?

Adelaide might not feel the need to offer a large contract since they have quite a few prospect doing really well. Butts, Murray, Worrell, and Michalanney all over 190+ cm, 23 and under, and performing very well in the backline. Michalanney is probably the closest to Doedee but seven years younger. Can completely understand that Adelaide might not be compelled to offer too much to resign Doedee considering the talent coming through.

We don't have much of a draft hand unless one of our A grade players ups and leaves and we don't want that.
Think we need to find a player or two in the lower leagues that suite our needs.
Hit and miss but so is any player going 30 plus in the draft. There may be a mature aged player (21 years +) we can pick up late.
I can see us resigning quite a few OOC fringe players to keep known depth so we can get through 2024.

You can't bring in Dunkley, Ashcroft (2) and Fletcher (12) in the one draft and not pay some price in the next one.
Luckly, we got McKenna for nothing the same year.

Our draft situation is a little bit odd because we have Levi next year, so assuming he’s a fairly high draft pick next year we really don’t need any big picks (just a smattering of change like we had last year).

I’ve seen speculation here that we’re looking to trade into this years first round because of that.

What if we give them Prior AND Dev and they give us pick #1? Seems fair

Besides which it would be really annoying for every Weagles game to come with Keaysesque commentary about how good Dev is going and how well he would fit in around here if we had only done x y or z...

The people saying that are stupid. I love Keays, but he still wouldn’t get a game here (and he’s fringe at Adelaide as well). Hope he has a long and prosperous career, but some of the hyperbole about that trade is insane.

what is the alternative? Play for West Coast and lose every game.. Not sure if Freo would take him?

$$$$

West coast would pay him much more as a starting mid than we would as a VFL depth player, and that’s before mentioning match payments.

Equation changes a bit if he locks down a starting slot at Brisbane.

Anything is possible with player movements becoming more common.
Plus, we have a few OOC players that may move even though we won't get much for them.

Draft Guru has us with picks 37, 49, 52, 53, 69 =Total points 1298 or equal to pick 12.
Usually, you have to take 3 draft picks each year.
Most clubs want a first-round pick so it will take a bit of maneuvering to get to say pick 22 from 37.

Didn't Freo have a Silvagni for a while?

Alex Silvagni

Not sure if he is directly related to the others. Could be.
Total of 60 games.
7 seasons with the Dockers then finished with 1 season with the Blues in 2017.

You can draft 1 kid and upgrade two rookies, to make up the three picks at the draft.

There's a 50-50 chance that the second of Bulldogs first round picks will be available in trade at the draft. However that pick is tied to us, and potentially there's an afl rule that might prevent us from trading for it. Bulldogs have another father son forward who's like looking a first round draftee.

Gold Coasts first round pick is also available, but we don't have currency for it.

Our future first should most definitely be on the trade table to get back in to this years draft.

Intriguing not sure what he brings to the team we don’t already have available
Doedee?? Deedoo !!

Can't do that with anyother player name in our list. Read this in someother board.

We could live trade for GC 24 with our 29 and 48. Any higher pick would be an interesting dilemma. I am waiting to see if WestCoast picks up bunch of teen picks from pick 1 or any other trade. They may like the idea of spreading investment across 2 drafts and swap their 19 with our first.

Money talks. But it’s also a combo of things.

For Dev it would be the combo of being home, more money and playing his actual position all the time. Not wing and half forward. The type of player he is means he’s competing with Dunkley and Neale.

Lohmann has clearly had another club in his ear from day one. More money and being home is enough to get that done.

Every time a commentator calls 'Doedee' I'm compelled to respond "Yes dey do!", so it would be better for the sanity of people around me if he didn't come to the Lions.

I genuinely believe our clubs focus on players being able to play at a high level in more than one position is entrenched. And that players want to develop this second string.

Playing different positions for a year or two builds their value outside the lions as well.

I think if a player is getting regular games the actual position isn't a deal breaker.

ROBERTSON LIKELY TO IGNORE RIVAL OVERTURES

Brisbane’s exciting inside midfielder Deven Robertson is considered likely to ignore the overtures from clubs including West Coast.

Early talks have now started on what a new deal would look like at Brisbane with a two-year deal the most likely option.

The No. 22 pick in the 2019 draft had played only three games before round 14 but has been selected in the last four games for a Lions side that is stacked in the midfield position.

The WA boy is one of a number of players linked to West Coast but who are disinclined to move to the Eagles given how deep their rebuild is likely to be in coming seasons.

Those early contract discussions are encouraging for the Lions given he has extensive interest from clubs across the nation including in Victoria.

The Lions will secure Will Ashcroft’s brother Levi in the national draft next year as a likely top 10 pick and father-son Jasper Fletcher has already shown he will make waves as a classy mid.

But Robertson seems likely to back himself in to fight for his midfield opportunities rather than explore the WA interest.

LIONS CHASE DOEDEE

ADELAIDE free agent Tom Doedee confirmed this week Brisbane was one of his suitors as they look for more defensive depth.

The Lions have been thrilled with the emergence of Jack Payne in a year where they have tried ex-Saints defender Darragh Joyce as a third tall and interceptor.

Daniel Rich will likely retire and the club’s half back stocks are strong with Kidean Coleman, Conor McKenna, Brandon Starcevic and Darcy Wilmot all playing well against Richmond.

But the Lions clearly believe they need another tall despite veteran Ryan Lester again finding a strong vein of form.

Dayne Zorko’s form is clearly good enough to go again but his injury issues are hurting given he has had extended absences with hamstring and calf issues.

Who is the better defender 3KZ is Football , Doedee or Lester?
Hmmm 🤔 let me think … Lester… by a mile! Doedee is 187cm, the same height as Starcevich while Lester is 192cm, which does allow him to match up a bit better on the taller forwards. He is also a better footballer. I am not too sure about the wisdom of drafting a bloke who is recovering from a major knee injury.

Surely there is an aging defender from his Hawthorn days that Fagan could make a play for. Maybe Fages could tempt former Hawk defender Kaiden Brand to join us on a multi year deal from West Adelaide. Brand is Captain at West, so Fagan would have to include him in the Leadership Group as a sweetener.

Alternatively, Fagan might look at getting a decent key position forward to the club. Fagen would have Luke Breust’s number, surely.
