Yeah, I think we broke his heart. He plays his best footy against us since. I think he might hate us now.

That comment broke me again. So I tracked down this old interview.

'Boys came around - got a bit hectic'

What a beautiful lad.

That threads a crazy trip down memory lane btw. Old posters, ridiculous hype about the 2013 draft and where we were going. Heaps of draft knowledgeable people saying we nailed it.

10 years ago! Get fkd.

We are going back to the draft when we should have been decorating what we built, instead we are going back to the start again. Arse about rebuild. Gresham and Howard are that mid career generation that we're missing a lot of and will end up having to buy back again when we cull. There has to be system in the rebuild not just tangential running in all directions and gambling.

They have to get this right or we will set ourselves backwards again. 3 years ago we were told that buying up a generation that was missing was the answer. Trade time is usually an endurance for me as we see which spuds we'll over pay and who'll we'll give away for nothing.

I'm getting so impatient.
I tend to agree. We've had a couple of strong drafts, this draft looks fairly poor for what we need. Seems like the perfect year to go after some mids with a couple of years under their belt.

We are also in that position that if we concentrate on the draft, all our All Australians will be well past their best or gone by the time the kids start hitting their straps.

Flanders would have been ideal, but not to be. Hopefully if we can snare Dow he surprises me and becomes a star.

Remember he was a Rising Star as well but then again so was Siposs.

The rumours around the traps was that he wanted to go back to WA. I'm starting to see this as more rumour than fact.

This was another one of James Gallaghers trades, he's been moved on and from his Linkedin account it seems as though he is no longer involved in AFL or football in general.

I'm really happy for Blake.
Blake most definitely did not want to go back to WA.

He preferred living in Melbourne.

Freo wanting Jackson squeezed him out, and it has all worked out very well for him.

There’s probably a pretty fair chance that happens anyway TBF. I think it’s super unlikely we’ll be in contention with Steele, Sinclair, Wilkie etc all still firing, that’s why I can half understand letting guys like Gresh and Howard go for decent compensation and adding to the younger brigade even if there isn’t exactly what we need. It does sound like the same thing we’ve been saying for 10 years though I’ll admit.

2 clubs let him go.

The odds of 2 clubs getting it wrong are very slim and it says more about Acres.

Not many people get a third chance and he has had some great moments for them.

But he isn’t missed, nor is he what we needed today.
He was Freo's best player in the Final against the Pies.. He got squeezed out there no doubt about that.

This retrospective look at acres and pining is weird.

He just wasn’t that good with us.
My point is that he wasn’t given the time. Some players take a little longer than other to develop and it wasn’t as if we were blessed with so much talent at the time.
Also, I suppose, the way it was done - given up last minutes as steak knives on demand from Bell who screwed us for as much as he could get.

And I’m afraid that will happen if we let Coffield go too.

I hope that isn't true.

I think if we were able to get a couple of quality players in around Kings age there is no reason why we couldn't be contending. NWM, Owen's and Windy will be in the third year next year, they should be playing quality footy in the next few years.

If we don't believe we can contend with those players we'd be best shopping a few of them rather than the scrubbers that won't get us a lot.

He still loves to hit up a long pass to a spectator in the crowd multiple times a game and I still think Wood's last couple of seasons have been better than Acres - I'd love to some peoples FB history looking up old girlfriends and kicking themselves over that one that got away, or perhaps ran away?
No one is comparing Wood to Acres, so not sure where that’s coming from. It’s a separate story.
Fact is though, now you’ve mentioned it, that Wood does not have as long left in his career and in all likelihood won’t be in our premiership team
(unless in the unlikely event we snag one in the next 2 years.)

No one is saying Acres is a star, but he’s definitely playing well, and being a match winner in two consecutive finals can’t just be a fluke.

He is playing well but as I pointed our earlier, it's the first time I've watched him and thought he was busting his gut week in week out

He never did that at St Kilda or Freo. He was dropped on a few occasions at Freo.

Who knows if it ever would have clicked for him if 2 clubs didn't want him, but I'd guess probably not

6 years and 75 games seems like enough time.

You’re right, we’ll never know.
What I do know is the the way we developed/played him was terrible, but that’s in the past Because I think we’ve improved a huge amount in that area.

Just hope we don’t lowball Coffield and have the same result with him getting the best out of himself elsewhere.

A bit off topic but what does everybody think of Blake Acres?

If Gresham wants to leave we have the option of matching and keeping him. If he wants star money and pushes band one it's obviously a calculated gamble and probably pushing towards letting him go.

If you get a second round pick back and his wage is under $750k you have to wonder if we'd be better off keeping him. I doubt the pick we get back gets a player as good back in weak draft.

He's still young and has his best footy ahead of him and if we were to go to market and find the equivalent player he's probably costing more. There is always a benefit in keeping your better players over losing them regardless. It takes time and energy to find players and banking some saves you time and money. We struggle to attract free agents ourselves as well.

It sounds like we are hoping to get in on the cap space trading scheme where clubs with tight caps dump their junk on you and give you a pick back to take-on their debt. Geelong was in the right place at the right time with a very poorly run club offering silly deals. I can't see too many more of those types of trades happening again.

If we end up with a spud on high wages and a second round pick it seems like a walk down another road that is distracting us from the real work that needs doing.
Would you take Whitfield his wage and a high pick?

Well there’s not a helluva lot else to talk about right now, and we’ve got an ex player being an important part of two finals wins of a team I can’t stand so….

would you rather Longer vs Hickey? 🤣

Luke Ball, Tom Lynch, Ben McEvoy, Goddard, Dal Santo, Stanley, Hickey, Acres, Dunstan, Ben Long,

We've got pretty good form for turning early picks or decent players into magic beans that lead us no-where.

Clark, Coffield, Gresham, Billings, Howard - we can't really afford to **** these up if we move them on. That's 5 first rounders.

Yeah I'd be disappointed if we lost Coffield. We are going to get nothing for him if he does.

And we have bugger all talent between Max King (23) and Jack Steele (28)
