AFLPA shot themselves in the foot with the 'Rookie upgrade = draft pick' rule.
Used to have to take 3 picks as a minimum, now some teams only take 1 or 2!
It says we can have 3 now, i thought it used to be you could have 2 , and a 3rd if one was Irish.
= Category B rookies =
Each club is allowed to have up to three 'Category B' rookies. Category B rookies are hired directly rather than drafted and represent players with non-traditional recruiting backgrounds. Players who could be recruited as Category B rookies are: International players who are not Australian citizens or residents New South Wales Scholarship Program Athletes International Scholarship Program Athletes Zone Selection by Sydney and Greater Western Sydney or ACT in New South Wales Zone selection by Queensland's Brisbane Lions and Gold Coast Players in other sports who have not been registered with an Australian Rules football club for three years Indigenous and multicultural players through the Next Generation Academy Zone In the special case of Irish international rookies, clubs can only have one Irish Category B rookie at a time. However, clubs are allowed to scout other Irish players as Category A rookies, and they can scout them directly without drafting them.
Band 2 would still be end of the 1st round though

COULD SHIEL BE PART OF GRESHAM DEAL?
The recruiting world is abuzz with anticipation about whether St Kilda can find a way to secure first-round compensation for free agent Jade Gresham.
He is not worth the $750,000 a year he would need to be paid over three seasons to trigger first-round compensation.
The open question is whether the AFL would approve a separate St Kilda-Essendon trade for a second player who might transfer from the Dons to the Saints.
Essendon’s Dylan Shiel is a player of interest for the Saints given his hard run and explosiveness, so there is some chance he could be on the move.
The Dons said last month he was a required player, but Darcy Parish’s re-signing means there is a logjam of Essendon mids.
So Gresham to Essendon as a mid-forward and Shiels to St Kilda might be a win-win for both clubs.
St Kilda would secure a first-round compo pick for Gresham (currently pick 13) and also improve its playing stocks by handing a draft pick to the Dons, who could give Ben Hobbs and Elijah Tsatas more midfield time.
But the AFL would need to approve both deals as fair value.
Some rivals believe the league would approve that kind of arrangement as the latest version of the Jack Bowes salary dump which advantaged Geelong and Gold Coast.
You couldn’t fault St Kilda for trying something inventive as recruiters Steve Silvagni and Graeme Allan attempt to betterthe club’s list.

Howard, 27, was overlooked for the club’s elimination final loss to the GWS Giants, raising questions about whether he should pursue a move to a rival on the hunt for a key defender.
St Kilda wants to be aggressive over the trade period to improve its draft position and clear some salary cap room to have scope in the free agency market in coming years.
Howard was seen as an expendable commodity, with several clubs, including Sydney, Hawthorn, Essendon and Port Adelaide chasing key defensive help.
But the 199cm Howard, who has one more year to run on his contract, has made clear he has no intentions to seek a move to a third club following his exit meeting with the Saints last week.
Essendon and Hawthorn are locked in a fight for North Melbourne key defender Ben McKay, who is weighing up his options at the two clubs.
Essendon has long been considered the frontrunner for McKay, but the Hawks remain a strong chance to land the key defender after tabling a more lucrative offer.
Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell is eager to land a key defender to beef-up his back half and support captain James Sicily after conceding the third-most points this season.
It has fuelled suggestions Howard could loom as a back-up plan for the Bombers to fill a key defensive spot if they miss out on McKay and lose Brandon Zerk-Thatcher to Port Adelaide.
But it is unlikely Howard will emerge as a serious plan B option for Essendon, which will look to Zach Reid to fill a key void in the back half next year after a nightmare run of back stress fractures.
Reid, 21 has played eight games in three seasons but missed all of 2023 with his latest back injury.

Ross Lyon mentioned it during preseason/before the season started and talked about how he, Coff, was down about another injury, etc... it stood out to me because I'd done the same thing and had surgery as well.
I might try and trawl through some of his pressers if they're still online, vaguely I think it was around the time we were playing praccy matches against Melbs/Essendon.
Edit: the old video's aren't playing for me, so I might have remembered it wrong or misheard it as I can't find anything about it or it could have happened and not reported on. i.e. I might not be reliable

I doubt a 4th round pick will ever be used - last year pick 53 to 59 were used , this year we dont even have a 4th round pick.

Think we would need to get GC pick 4 to be locked to get Sanders that pick will be 6 by the time bids come in.

Of the top prospects that leaves, Sanders Curtin O'Sullivan Caddy and Wilson in the open pool with Ethan Reid and Rodgers GC NGA tied.
Most probably have Curtin next. Sanders could slip a couple of picks if Melb want Caddy as a forward - GWS don't need mids but not sure how he would get past Geelong.

So Essendon's pick at 8 currently gives you a faint hope of him sliding to there but you wouldn't sell the farm for a faint hope has to be GC pick if you want to be sure to get your man.
Also happy that our team has identified Sanders as the target fits our needs perfectly would be a good long term match with Pou and Owens - Pretty powerful midfield

It’s a pretty good plan Shiel is a handy stop gap and we get our first rounder. That makes sense, so long as the other trades do I’ll be happy.
