Just listening to SEN talk about Melbourne working on an "earth-shattering trade". Made me wonder as to what that would look like if the Saints were involved. Could we be working on a deal to send Steele over for Pick 5? I don't think it'll happen, I'm just putting 2 and 2 together as where theres smoke theres fire.
Unless Steele requests a trade. He isn’t leaving

They are making a play for pick 1.

Won't happen as the Eagles will want to make sure they can get Curtin so they need pick 2 or 3 at worst.

If there is a team that doesn't need Jack Steele, it's Melbourne. It makes no sense for them. It's more likely they are trying to get a Tom Lynch, someone like that to fix their forward line failures. Or they're trying get Harley Reid.

Likely give him 2 years and spread the money out over it for about 600k for both.
Either way. As a midfielder is he is upgrade on Gresham.

The first rounder helps us achieve our goal of multiple firsts.

But at 12 and 13 their probably isn’t the gun mids you want coming through the draft

The Shiel deal isnt about Shiel though.

Its gotta be about getting Gresham paid for band 1, which i assume Essendon is fine with provided they clear Shiels cap space.

They probably see a player swap with $200k freed up and we see paying and extra $200k for pick 13.

If Shiel never even plays a game thats a wash. If he gets his body right and get a few games, great, bonus.

Why would a midfield than consists of Oliver, Viney and Petrecca want Steele? Makes no sense for either party.
Because they rely on Petracca to solve all their forward problems and at least if he goes forward it’s Steele in the middle rather than someone like Sparrow or Jordon. I can definitely see why they’d want him.

It’s about the draft.

But you’re not taking a player unless he can add some value. Shiel would be our best Clearance mid

Its all fine, except there needs to be something in it for the Saints.
As its reported , there isn't.

Its also a fact that you can't tie a trade to a free agent Movement.
One has to go before the other.

Possibility.
----------
Saints trade their current first round pick for pick 8 and Shiel .
THEN: Don's offer a free agency deal for Gresham, if it doesn't trigger the tier 2, we are screwed over. But not really , its still a decent deal to take Shiel off their books.
----------
Don's offer free agency deal for Gresham and pay him extra to trigger tier 2 . ( which will cost them every year of gresh's contract ).
Then the Dons trust StKilda to take Shiel of their hands for? The compensation pick? With 8 going back? Sorry if 8 isn't coming back i'm walking away right now.
-------------------

I can't see the handshake deal thing panning out.

What BrutThough posted

“More likely stkilda gives up pick 31”

“It’s effectively a pick buy by the saints”

A funny twist on that would be

Step 1 - Essendon put up a big fat contract for Gresham
Step 2 - St Kilda gets band 1 compensation
Step 3 - We trade pick 31 to Freo for Henry
Step 4 - We offer 51 for Shiel or they can keep him and his contract

This is who I was referring to yesterday.

Very early discussions. Let’s see what happens. You can see below why it might not work.

Absolutely on board provided it’s a decent pick. I’m glad we are using our brains for once. Same as Shiel - player doesn’t matter so much, all about regenerating around that young core
