2024 Fixture

Did the AFL actually compensate us in the fixture for last year's finals debacle?

  • Sort of - Better difficulty, but commercial fixture as expected or worse

So when do they finalise Rounds 16 to 24 - was it about the end of May? They screw fans over as no-one can book flights etc.

Just having a look at the following rounds -

Round 18 - 3 games scheduled for MCG so one has to be played Friday night, Saturday and Sunday
Round 19 - 3 games scheduled for Marvel so again one has to be played Friday night, Saturday and Sunday (of the 3 games scheduled for Marvel, ours Essendon vs Adelaide might be the favourite for Friday night)
Round 21 - same again as Round 19
Round 23 - same again as Round 19

This assumes that they have decided no Thursday night games from Round 16-24.

And Round 24 is just bizarre - games being played at Ballarat and Launceston.

Absolutely stupidity, was hoping to see the bombers game in July on my way to the snow.
Need a confirmation of the date though.

Amazingly we have not been sent to the graveyard

Prime time games against GWS, St Kilda, Essendon and Port Adelaide

Shoved to Sunday to face Brisbane, Hawthorn and the Bulldogs

Geelong in the good Saturday twilight slot

Yeah it feels a bit 'bob each way' from the VFL,

Just enough prime time games to give us a pat on the head, but still a few graveyard games to ensure we know where we stand in the scheme of things.

All in all, probably ever so slightly better than I expected given our iffy start to the year.

In round 21 the geniuses at the AFL have put the Bulldogs vs Melbourne and West Coast vs Gold Coast on a Friday night double header, while also putting Collingwood vs Carlton and Port vs Sydney on at the same time

Notice how they only ever have double headers where one of the games is a non Vic Vs non Vic?
They find it so hard to have non Vic teams play in primetime that they just have to have Melbourne teams on at the same time.

How many years have we NOT played at Geelong?
How many years have we not played at Geelong, but they played in Adelaide?

This answers some of that question. 34 seasons and we'll have gone there 24 times?

Edit to add: Ran the numbers:
Adelaide only: 10
Geelong only: 8
Return games: 16

I have included the Walshy year as return games as that's what was scheduled.

However, we were scheduled to play there in 2020 in R23, which ended up being here. So if Covid didn't happen it'd be 9-9, and we'd have travelled there 25 times in 34 seasons.

Is that saying we have played Geelong twice in a season 16 out of the 34 seasons?

It's because the AFL just released the fixture for Round 16 onwards.

Yes but what difference did it make given we already knew who teams were playing and where.

The only variable was when they were playing (day, twilight or night) and don’t think that comes into the equation re : hardest.

Absolute meaningless rubbish.

Agree.
It seems unfair from our perspective but I wonder if the commercial reality for ch7 is so strong, the AFL must be understanding (appeasing) to their most significant income stream of the entire AFL.

Does anyone have data on the size of the AFL TV market in Victoria vs the rest of Australia? In absolute population it's easy to work out but the AFL TV viewers might well be quite different.
