Have I got this right?

AFL press release last August about changes to AFL draft rules (NGAs/Father Son DVI and future pick trading) stated:

Future pick trading

From 2025, Clubs will be able to trade future draft selections up to two years in advance subject to the following AFL imposed protections:

Clubs must use two first round selections every four years.

Clubs must have board approval to trade any first round selections.

For second year only: Clubs must hold the full suite of draft selections (2nd and 3rd round selections) to trade their first round selections and vice versa.

Now looking at Ports recent drafting history...

2022 - no first rounders used
2023 - no first rounders used
2024 - 1 x first rounder
2025 - don't have a first round pick

How could they trade out their next 2 years of future 1sts for Wanganeen-Milera?

They're already in breach of the rules if they don't take a 1st rounder this year (which they don't even have). But I think the AFL gave them an exception so they could pull of the Horne Francis trade.

But they would surely need another afl exemption to trade their 2026 and 2027 1st rounders? Because that would result in them using only 1 first rounder in 6 years... Am I wrong about this?
they might argue their NGA kids Cochrane (2026 - NGA status pending) and Pilot (2027) will be taken in the first round, and so ultimately they will find the picks to match those bids and satisfy the requirements

AFL might use the Cochrane NGA status to squeeze them though. which is farcical as it should be an open & shut yes or no, but I can't understand why it's taken them a year and counting to assess his eligibility

Just because it’s not on your timeline, doesn’t mean the outcome will be negative.

Stop complaining about it. I’m all for the speculation, but the whinging is just cringe.

The players are focused on the games for the rest of this month. Nas’ footy is speaking for itself.

You can't really blame Windy if he decides to leave. By all reports, he's been low-balled and wasn't in the best 22 in the presentation by SOS to Nas.

That's a fair kick in the nuts when you're 22 and should be entering the prime of your career.

We could be looking at an offseason of losing:- Nas, Steele, Marshall & Windy. That's a lot of change, hopefully they have a plan!
Has that presentation with him not included in the Best 22 been confirmed?

If true, just lock the doors and throw away the keys.

Let's say it's actually the case. We aren't exactly talking about a generational midfielder here. Perhaps they genuinely don't see him as best 22 in the midfield ahead of Nas, Pou, Box, Hall, Garcia, Wilson, etc. Gotta have the courage of your convictions I guess.

For those who think nas is still staying, at what point will you think he's gone? It's round 21 and he hasn't signed. How do you still think he's staying? Will u be worried if he doesn't sign this week? Or by the start of the last game against the giants?
You need to vote in the poll mate.

Feels like we are being forced to watch an awful and predictable movie to its conclusion, even though we know how it ends. It seems like this is going to drag on into the offseason and the outcome is going to hurt, despite know what was coming.

I personally don't really feel like absorbing the media shitstorm that will happen when/if Nas requests a trade home. We will be given a half-eaten ham and lettuce sandwich that has been marinated in dehydrated urine, and WE WILL be grateful.

While it will be painful, my main concern is ensuring this awful season and how it has seemingly been handled hasn't upset other key members of our list, such as Windy etc.

As mentioned, if SOS and the crew balls this offseason up, there will be a fair few Sunday afternoon crowd attendances that start with the number one next season. Memberships will tank and the energy will just be flat.

Buckle up for another month or so of this I guess.

Doubt it happens this year - would have to give all the list managers notice yada yada yada 🙄
Not sure about that.

The top end of the draft is so compromised that it risks becoming both embarrassing and farcical.

Especially if Brisbane and Gold cost both finish top 4. Which is not impossible (especially with Gold Coast’s soft fixture).

Maybe there will be some dilution to access this year before a complete overhaul to access in 12 months.

If they do it’s written on a napkin from the pantry.

A lot of assumptions here, just wait and see. I get it's coping but at the same time we genuinely haven't heard anything outside of what has been fed to the media. Nas was out for lunch for hours this morning with all the Saints boys, had a great time by all accounts. Let's see.

Afternoon. Back again after mainstream confirmed my Leek Aleer news.
Windhager still unsigned as we approach round 22... In career best form.
Windhager camp has been infuriated by the clubs treatment of one of their own NGA boys. From the lowballing offers to the botched NAS presentation. Marcus is a loyal young man who may still stay, but it is fair to say the List and Recruitment team at the club have operated appalling in their treatment of him.

On Nasiah: Intel suggests he is leaning towards leaving, and Nas' teammates are of the belief it will be the crows he elects to nominate, not the power.
Club clearly, still has a few weeks to change his mind.
What I will say is if this stuff is true and comes out to be fact, those who are in those roles need to be held accountable.
I get we need to be ruthless but why wasn’t Windhager included would be my question?! We’ve had a dogshit midfield for years, we’ve finally got the green shoots to suggest that will be changing and now we are throwing up our future best line up without him even making the bench?
Yet we will take on Tex Wanganeen who’s a very average footballer to try and please NAS? Make it make sense.
I’m sure Windhager isn’t asking for 800k a year, he’s worth every bit of 600-650k a year, we paid Zak Jones that ffs.

Won’t happen, you need the numbers and powerful clubs are about to benefit yet again.

Also father son accounts for what % compared to academy picks.

When do you think it gets done if he stays? I feel like you've been pretty optimistic which I appreciate, but how much longer will it take

I've said a few times now. Dusty didn't sign his Tiger's for life deal until 31 August. He even met with Norf etc. I still haven't heard anything about Nas meeting with the SA clubs.

I don't think it's wrong to say that Nas with his recent form is entering the Dusty potential territory.

There's a very good reason none of the players come to sites like this or generally do media and have to go through training for it. This thread is a good example of why it's generally disliked in that circle.

These just aren't the same scenarios though.

Dusty was in a fantastic team, they were every chance to win the flag that year before he signed.

It was about money and years, neither are a factor with Nas based on what we know. No go-home factor.

He'd also been a Richmond player for alot longer - again, are there ANY examples of a top 5 player at <100 games requesting a trade? I don't think there's been one.
