Pou has plenty of potential, done some nice work in a number of games, but until he can influence games as a midfielder or a forward, then we have to hope he will take another step up. We can't put every player who shows promise, into the midfield- someone needs to make it their own. McRae has shown his A-grade qualities, Nas did a few nice things in there, but seems better as an attacking half back, she for Sincs, but quality does trail away and we have group

Hop Max recovers, but he is an eggshell and will play a few good games and then another injury.
Philipou hasn’t influenced games as a midfielder or forward? His last 5 games:

  • Rd 9 (Carlton - forward): 2.1 goals and 5 score involvements.
  • Rd 24 (Carlton - forward): 20 disposals, 2 clearances, 9 tackles, 5 score involvements and 30 pressure acts.
  • Rd 21 (Brisbane - midfielder): 24 disposals at 79.2% efficiency, 327 metres gained, 1 goal, 5 score involvements, 19 pressure acts, 5 clearances, 14.4 player rating points.
  • Rd 18 (Adelaide - midfielder): 20 disposals, 314 metres gained, 1.1 goal, 9 tackles, 5 clearances, 4 score involvements, 12.9 player ratings points.
  • Rd 17 (Sydney - midfielder): 26 disposals, 1.1 goal, 10 score involvements, 714 metres gained, 5 clearances, 17.2 player ratings points and 10 coaches votes.

Pou will make it as a mid, so will NAS if we retain him. Future midfield looks okay, we just need some of the young B graders to take a big step.

Garcia looks the most likely to me. Windhager has some real flaws in his game, hopefully he proves me wrong.

If Trav or Boxshall end up being solid B grade mids I think we are in decent shape in 2 years.

My big worry is can we develop the talent appropriately. We have proven time and again we struggle to put muscle on young blokes. We need some of these guys to turn into bulls.

Now how is he supposed to dominate the midfield if he doesn’t get put in there????

Oh and btw he dominated the VFL as a midfielder….
Oh and btw

In those games

Rd 18 5 clearances(team high) 5 tackles against sydney
Rd 19 5 clearances 9 tackles
Rd 22 5 clearances (team high) 3 tackles against the premiers
Rd 25 2 clearances 9 tackles equal game high and leading team high tackles

So he lead clearances against the two grand finalists.

Hmmmm

So at what point do you bring him into the VFL.

When he’s getting 30 plus goals.

Checks notes ….

He’s done that already.

Like idk how you expect us to develop young mids. Sure he is not going to dominate every game.

I mean s%#t

Unless your Nick daicos, guys take time

We lost the clearances to Adelaide by 4 and to GWS by 3.

We were comprehensively smashed in both games.

The crows kicked 8 goals from key forwards. Giants 7 + another 5 from Toby.

Our inability to defend key talls and intercept the ball when it goes their way - Just like Friday night, where we then can play the game on our terms, which opens up the field and gives us advanced options for territory is a much bigger concern.

There is more to a game of football outside of clearances - especially when our game is built around run, carry and pressure to win the ball back high.

I’m not saying we don’t need midfielders. But if we keep losing the above mentioned contests. We are continually going to struggle.
Depends on the year of that pick I suppose, a second rounder this year projects out to the 40s based on how Twomey rates the first round going into the 30s.

That’s not the argument.

I was talking about Friday night in isolation but generally how injury and suspension has robbed us our ability to play a genuine AFL level structure because personnel isn’t available.

I also said I was still happy how the Battle deal washed out (even if I do wish it did end in Harvey Langford/Draper) I think Tauru has some very special stuff about him.

The ability to intercept is very generalised. We couldn’t contain the big gorilla forwards this year. Battle would have helped. But he wasn’t the answer to the actual issue - which is that we still need an aggressive aerial defender. Every premiership side has atleast 1. Which is where you imagine the interest in Aleer comes in - Alongside Tauru, but where he ultimately ends up playing is probably still to be seen.

Bergman isn’t a key back btw and I don’t think any saints supporters want to lose Nas (I don’t think we will - I’m pretty confident on this)
What, and you didn’t think this would be an issue 12 months ago when your argument with offloading Battle for a FRP was to fix the midfield issues once and for all?

So, basically, in the space of 12 months you’ve put forward conflicting and deviating arguments around:
  • Initially, losing our key intercepting and running defender with Battle to gain draft capital and fix the midfield issues which weren’t addressed at all through Battle’s free agency and remain largely unresolved. You were aware then that we maintain a run and carry game style, so that’s a moot point.
  • Currently, you’re now arguing midfield is no longer the issue and we should be coughing up draft capital so we can obtain Bergman (medium defender) and Leek (key defender) so we can fix intercept issues down back (arguably, still a secondary issue to the midfield).
  • You’ve also come out and said losing Nas and a FRP for Bergman and Butters would be a good deal, basically we would be pulling Ports pants down (this one probably takes the cake).

At some point, you sort of start to lose credibility, noting this is just the last 12 months and I’d hate to troll back through what other pearlers you’ve promoted.

Friday night, we congested the game because we couldn’t compete in the middle, after being pantsed there in intervals, which either forced us down the line or either we failed to hit lateral targets under pressure to break the line. Not an intercepting issue.

And, to clarify, are you arguing that Toby Greene (small to medium forward) scored 5 goals because we couldn’t intercept? Surely not lol.

Not sure if mentioned in the last 12 pages I’ve missed since Tuesday (you campaigners can post sheesh) but I did hear some interesting and positive news on Max’s knee. Cause for some optimism at least. We need the big unit back and I’m glad we took him over Rozee FWIW
Reliable “sauce”?

Dogs just ripped us apart. We couldn't close down their space and couldn't find any of our own. It was the worst game we've played so far but I suspect that they worked on a plan to break us open.
I suspect the Dogs just dust off the plan they use on us a bit as we panic and 3 rush the tackle while the ball gets pumped out wide taken away for a goal

You’ll all stfu when Tauru and King take to the field together.

Reading the draft threads on Max, but was depressing seeing all the banking of Clark and Coffield as stars.
We’re so desperate for success. It’s just sad. Understandable, but sad.

Always liked his toughness
Not 600k like at the time bht he’s proved plenty wrong
Having a superb year
Oh and GC are starting to move the ball like scary good and made Hawks mids at times look ordinary out of middle …
Will bring the lube when we play them..

The talent for nearly half their list from concession and academy picks makes me sick. They could win the next 4 premierships and I wouldn't at all be surprised.

Tigers beat Gold Coast at Docklands a few weeks ago.

We’re not without a chance.

If king had stayed healthy for the first 6 years of his career he’d be talked about as the best player in the draft.
Continuity, not ability, has hampered his career and I’d say very few of you will complain if he’s part of our next period of contention

This. He is not a bust that clearly didn't have it like Josh Schache or Sam Weideman. People need to remember the difference. Charlie Curnow looked like he would never play again and Jesse Hogan peaked at literally 29. We don't have a bust, we just need to get him healthy and confident.

Our key position stocks are a serious concern. We've lost Cordy, King and Howard and suddenly the cupboard looks utterly bare. Keeler miles off it. Hopefully we'll get a look at Tauru but he and Barratt are babies.

Surely we have to look at a key position player in the mid season draft? A glaring oversight from the trade period.

And if my Auntie had nuts she would be my uncle

No one is doubting his ability but many a talented player has had his career cut short because their body can't handle AFL footy

if Paddy McCartin didn't have concussion issue he would've been a very good player too

We all hope King comes back and doesn't miss another game for the next 7 years, but the 6 years so far is a decent sample size
Different cases. Petracca was the consensus number one pick at the time. That was just us trying to be cute.

King was the right selection at the time, just as Billings was over Bont. Just as we’ve had some sliding doors moments that have hurt us, we’ve had plenty that have benefited us too.

King will be fine. His issues have been structural, not soft tissue. We’d have more to worry about if he kept breaking down with repeated hamstring injuries or as you mentioned in McCartins case, repeated concussions.

I'm calling it .... we are going to be absolute barrelling freight train in the next 2 to 3 years .... as long as the injury gods go into sleep mode

We have enough to be a very competitive side but so much of our momentum gets slowed by injury. The only up side is that we then keep blooding and adding players trying to cover holes. That should create depth.

In hindsight it wasn't the right move. Billings over Bont wasn't right either. It was safer but obviously a terrible move.

King might end up being a masterstroke but right now he's probably one of four disappointments in the top 13 of a super draft. Tarryn Thomas, Chase Jones and Lukosius the only others that aren't guns.
