MCVEE TO STAY A DEMON BUT IN NO RUSH TO SIGN

Melbourne’s Judd McVee wants to stay at the Demons but isn’t yet in a hurry to commit.

The West Australia’s management met with the Demons last week but the offer is not yet at a stage where he would be keen to sign it.

With McVee back from a long-running hamstring injury, Daniel Turner emerging as an intercepting back and Jake Bowey in terrific form, the Demons backline is taking shape.

Steven May was in super form in the one-point loss to Collingwood, with Jake Lever easing back from an ankle concern.

So the nucleus of the Demons’ back six is there for future years, which makes securing 21-year-old McVee so important given he can lock away dangerous smalls and mid-sizers.

Harley Reid

Don't miss out on the headlines from AFL. Followed categories will be added to My News.

Some Victorian clubs are getting cold feet on bids this year for Harley Reid given the vast bounty they would have to give up and his likely astronomical wage.
For Reid to move back this year and break his contract he would need to be paid at least $1.8 million a season on a long-term deal.
While he has had his moments, he has also had his challenges with up-and-down form for the battling Eagles.
Contracted until the end of 2026, those close to him have also given off the feeling that he is easing into Perth life.

We got rid of him when he wanted to continue. He was very much a Melbourne supporter for a long period of time after that and only thawed to Freo a couple of years ago through is indigenous contacts.
His off-field behaviour in the year or two before he was delisted wasn’t great, I don’t think the club did the wrong thing as such, but no doubt he wouldn’t have been happy about it.

But he played 131 games at Freo compared to 118 at Melbourne. His goal average was slightly higher at Melbourne (1.98 v 1.7), but to claim ‘it didn’t work out’ is pretty disingenuous.

"...players had left Victoria and moved to WA where it worked, and those where it didn't, including former client Jeff Farmer."

Wot. The Wizard loves Freo.
The article is carefully written to try to stick the knife into Freo without technically doing it. That sentence doesn’t mean Farmer didn’t work, he just got listed last next to the didn’t work line.

Farmer definitely worked. Bolton has also worked and he would be wasting away at WC had he decided to follow the managers preferred WA team.

I feel like Jeff had better highs when he was a Demon.

He was great for us, but he did tail off and really played angry once the umps turned on him a bit.
Played a touch too much for free kicks and it gave them an excuse to shaft him, he started missing out on the ones that he was entitled to.

At his best he was just magnificent.

The big issue in the past we didn't have a good team before we traded in players, then we expected the players we traded in to do too much.

His best footy was most definitely at Melbourne.

That said, his ten-week period at the back end of 2006 as we marched into the finals was nothing short of sensational.

He kicked 31 in the last 8 games of the season including a couple bags of 6.

Sponsors and endorsements is where the money's at

They take 20% or more on those

Thats why its better to have star players, they command good sponsorship deals

How much could Bolton and Pickett honestly have from sponsors/endorsements? They are quiet/reserved types and don't have the pull of a Bailey Smith or Daicos.

I was looking for some security screens and saw McGovern's face pop up on their website. Liam Ryan does dodgy rug commercials. I'm sure players can rack up a bunch of obscure stuff, but a lot of it is probably just payment with freebies.

I would think what the stars get is a small fraction of their actual salary and the manager would be getting 20% of not a whole lot.

Google AI tells me Daicos has a five figure deal with Nike, making him one of the top off field earners. And he's the golden child who is much more marketable than Bolton and Pickett.

I would think Bolton and Pickett would struggle to bring in more than 100k each from endorsements, and wouldn't be surprised if it is a lot less. Maybe the manager walks away with 40k or 20k or 10k from the pair of them, but whatever it is, I doubt it is a huge windfall.

So he talked Kozzie out of going to WA because of the "failed players", yet he organized the Tim Kelly trade and he literally traded Bolton, who has been a success, less than 12 months ago.

Bit of a slap in the face to Bolton. Of all the managers Kozzie had to pick from, he chose that flog?

Don't go home for family reasons mate, sign for extra money, which in turn pays my salary, because you're not homesick.

No chance Kozzie doesn't flirt with the idea of trading to WA soon, his manager just locked in his bank account, even Melbourne would know he'll ask for a trade soon

They get all sorts of indigenous events funded by the AFL

Promos to appear in indigenous material etc

To be fair, I recon Melbourne tabled the offer first. I’m not sure he had to do a lot of persuading when it’s 12.5m.

The whole thing is a bit of a circus really.

I do wonder what it will look like in 2 years time if Gawn is gone then. He has really carrying them the last month or so, basically since our game. While Melbourne have made a couple of great picks recently it's not a list you look at and think they can really sustain a long run in the top 4/8. Then the other aspect being Pickett wanting to go home every few weeks. Money might be able to ameliorate that to an extent but we will see.

I hope the club just simply puts it out of mind now and focuses on drafting to plug holes. If an FA wants to come then great but I don't really see much on the near horizon that is worth paying the moon for.

Tasmania would have been able to take Pickett as an uncontracted player in 2027 when he was out of contract, even though he was a free agent - now if they have to rebuild end of 2027 or 2028 they can get two or three top ten picks out of Tasmania for Pickett if they want.

It's great result for Pickett, locks Melbourne in for a lot of commitment but I'd rather have the player and the headache of managing around his contract than the cap space and no player for it.

Sounds like McVee has a much better offer on the table elsewhere

Could McVee play wing for us?

All these players look good in our back 6, but McVee could replace Sharp on the wing? Drafted as a defender, so unlikely.

I really like him as a player, but is he enough of an upgrade on Worner to justify bringing him in.

Pearce, Cox, Ryan
Chapman, Clark, Worner, Simpson

I don't know how much he can run. He didn't feature in the top runners of any of the games I checked last season but he's a medium defender so his role wouldn't lend itself to that like a genuine wing or supporting small forward working up field to help out as an extra at stoppage.

I have a bit of a ideological hurdle to get over in regards to paying a reasonably high trade price for a wing, especially a fat side winger. It's a rubbish role. Genuinely sucks. You can run 17km during the game and barely touch the footy at all, who wants to play that??

Especially with Freo's winning ball movement patterns where the ball avoids the fat side winger and your whole game is covering space to block out the opposition's easy mark up the ground.

If you're buying Judd McVee, you're playing him as a defender in my opinion. Even rotating players through the fat side is just taking the opportunity to exhaust your players for their actual productive role. We have a guy who can run that role all game so our play makers can play in better positions when we need them there.

But I don't see an issue with a winger getting one touch per quarter as long as his opponent isn't getting 20 and tearing us up. Kicking wide and slowing down doesn't work for us.

From what I’ve heard Freo couldn’t offer more than 900k at 5/6 years he’s getting 1.35m at 9 years. Anyone would be stupid to knock back that deal especially an indigenous bloke who loves family. That sets him his kids and parents up for life. Best case scenario is he gets the shits with Melbourne asks for a trade in 28/29 and they pay half his contract Treloar style.

obviously it sucks for us because we all wanted him at Freo but if this was a saints player that said no to going home to Queensland for this deal everyone here would be like you’d be stupid not to take that money

For anyone, in any family, it's life changing money. He can't turn it down, he will get paid for the rest of his career now no matter what team it's for.

Reidy - I think likely gone.
Narkle - I don't see it, but likely to stay.

Likely to be extended

Delist and pay out
Brodie

Reidy and Darcy gone in one off season with no other back up in place?

Ideally you bring in the best mature ager from 2nd tier comp.

I don't see much point keeping Reidy, as you don't want him to play.

Our current best twenty two has all of our first choice rucks and the two players who are the backup for it, with one of them being the overlap. We have to have either a tall forward who can slide in and replace Jackson or Voss forward or directly replace Jackson or Darcy in the ruck... or both.

We don't have depth in either position.

My current best 22 has Jackson as the main ruck, Voss as backup and Dudley playing as a small forward. (Effectively replace Darcy with Dudley, and go smaller and quicker )

If you pretend that the best twenty two is the one that takes the field last week and this week (assuming no late Darcy out change for Dudley), we are short of a key forward in my opinion.

If we need more run, why not drop Voss for Dudley? Darcy is way better in the ruck than Voss, Voss is far better forward but he isn't the only forward - Darcy in my mind results in more deliver to the entire forward line.

For the record I want Voss in the team, but I also want Jackson and Darcy in there too.

Dudley has had a taste at the top level and now I want him to get as fit as possible so he can be our best small forward next year after Bolton.

Out of Jackson, Voss, and Darcy, who is the best forward and who is the best ruck?

I think Jackson is the best ruck, and Voss is the best forward. I am not that concerned with how Voss goes in the 20-30% of the game he spends in the ruck. He is more than serviceable in that area.

I don't believe the current best 22 is the best team we could pick, so I am going to ignore that. I think if JL could replace Darcy with a gun small forward he would.

Would you hypothetically replace Sean Darcy with Darcy Jones? Would it improve our 22?

Happy to agree to disagree.
