Wow, our rosy-cheeked Rising Star is dominating!

40+ goals like Mick Turner would be pretty cool to see. But they'll probably still put stoppage midfielders on the wings. You usually have to dominate coaches votes to get recognised as a genuine wingman in AA talks.

Xerri is the starting ruck at the moment.

Gawn on the bench.
Rubbish.

Fun fact: Gawn has taken more contested marks than Xerri has taken general marks :)

In what world does the player with more disposals, more marks, more contested marks, more hitouts, and more score involvements play second fiddle to the other ?

Big test for Xerri this week against Darcy Cameron.

Right now? Laughable. Gawn has the starting ruck and very easily too, he'd be almost odds on to be captain right now, maybe they give it to Bont but whatever.

Marks mean nothing when you sit behind the ball at times, which Gawn does every game.

Xerri has laid more than TRIPLE the amount of tackles Gawn has. They have the same amount of hitouts, Xerri leads clerances and gawn leads disposals.

Its very very close, but im going Xerri. Xerri also leading Coaches votes which is a big award

Remind me to never ask your opinion on football.

Contested marking around the ground, not just defence, is a huge part of any ruckman's game. Huge.

Why do you think opposition clubs put so much planning into avoiding Max Gawn.

Tackles ? Big deal.

Dean Cox is one of the great ruckman. I don't think anyone remembers his paltry 1.48 tackles per game.

Nor will they remember Gawn's 2.44 or Aaron Sandilands 1.32. LOL

It honestly isn't close, Gawn has the ruck position. I'd honestly say it's debatable whether Xerri is even no2 with Darcy Cameron's season in particular being outstanding, Tim English is in a top side doing very well too.

Spot on.

I'd add clearances for ruckman are also a useless stat.

Give me a ruckman who taps it to the advantage of his better ball using midfielders, over a ruckman who grabs it out of the ruck and hack kicks it 35 metres in the direction of his goal, any day of the week.

nah its not close. Gawn would have to get injured to not be the starting ruck. It's just up to the selectors as to whether they want a 2nd ruck on the interchange or not.

Liam Ryan will enter discussions if he keeps playing the way he has. Unbelievable performances in a very very average team…..

All they need to look at is the round 2 game when Xerri embarrassed him.

At some point people are going to reach the stage where they understand four quarters of football isn’t representative of an entire season when delineating between two players. If Xerri plays like a busted ringhole for a month while Gawn is best on ground during the same period leading up to when they select the team do you really think they’ll all go ‘oh but round two.’

Gawn starts.

Xerri still makes the team on the bench.

This thread every year turns into a starting ruck spot circle jerk.
The way I'm doing my first team is the starting 22 in position and then the 4 on the bench are the ones unlucky to miss out on a start. Ideally, it would be at least one of each, but I'd take two standout midfielders unlucky to miss out than a ruck further off.

I started my own system of measuring key stats to eliminate bias in my past teams which always ended up missing players that played well. If I hadn't implemented the system, I wouldn't have identified Callum Wilkie, Josh Worrell, George Hewitt and Ed Richards as being on the verge of a first AA.

FWIW: It's 50% people genuinely believing that X really should be in the team and they find some obscure reasoning, and 50% people baiting.

Xerri is leading coaches votes in a team that has won 2 games and is second last of the ladder. It's not just one game.

Coaches votes are a reasonable indicator of player performance but I still have some issues with it.
  • Coaches may overrate, or even underrate their own players performance if they're aware that voting for certain players might indicate bias
  • Coaches may recognize opposition player performances that the players coach expects more of. For example it wouldn't be uncommon for Hinkley to give Zak Butters 3 votes because he saw greater value in Bergmans performance across half back, but another coach for example saw something amazing from Zak that Ken expected more of. (I feel there are certain players more likely to attract opposition vote in cases where other players were better)
  • There's still the human element to it so bias will always exist.
  • I think it would be interesting to do an end of year count for the number of games where a player scored 8,9, or 10 votes.
Not saying Xerri hasn't had an amazing season, but he's unlucky that Gawn has been better. At this stage I'm not slotting him onto the bench.

Do you watch any of the matches?

Have you noticed Gawn often pulling ruck opponents jumpers in ruck contests? Do you think umpires will continue to let him get away with this illegal tactic for the rest of the season?
