We had 45 inside 50's for the game that resulted in 18 marks inside 50 - not sure you can say we didn't have a system - just failed to convert the great opportunities we created
Once again we only converted 1 in 5 i50 entries to a goal. 9 goals from 45 i50.
We allowed Brisbane 15 from 61 so basically 1 in 4.
We were down on entries compared to our average of about 55 and we average less than 50 against, so conversion wasn't the only issue

I know he copped it in the matchday thread, but I liked the efforts of young Carroll.

Sure he got found out with the holding the ball. But I bet he had nobody to kick to upfield and I am certain his more senior teammates didn’t tell him he was hot. And I don’t mind the smile if it is going to help him rebound.

He made the mistake and he continued to take the game on. He didn’t go back into his shell. We’ve been crying out for that type of player for quite some time.

Just continue to do you, Matty Carroll.

My belated thoughts from the game:
  • Better energy across the game.
  • Some senior players lifted a bit like Cripps who had much more energy.
  • Others (Charlie, TDK) still disappointing.
  • Pitto with the torp of the decade. When Pitto is up and about, he lifts the boys so much.
  • Haynes dumping Charlie was amazing. Hook it into my veins.
  • The ump that floored Cowan needs to be dropped and agree with Vossy - ball up there. Criminal.
  • Cripps needs serious goal kicking practice. Few others do as well just quietly.
  • We are still so slow. Very little urgency.
  • As a whole, we are way off the pace - nothing is changing this year (we need these sweeping changes yesterday).
  • Bring in a few more kids next week, please.

Yep 9 goals from 45 entries but was that from lack of opportunity or lack of conversion.

Moir had 2 shots, Charlie had 2, Fogarty 1 and Motlop 1 (probably a couple of others I have forgotten)that were all from around 30m and incredibly gettable and they missed every one - lets just say we convert only 3 of those 6 and end up with 12 goals from 45 entries - that becomes a better goal to inside 50 ratio than the Lions.

Would feel better about the losses if we kicked straight

It’s an issues we’ve had for years and would ideally like to put that behind us….

Anyway, a lot to like ion respecting internet and the way we tried to use the ball , but a lot to dislike too - basic errors from senior players very frustrating
There was probably 3-4 that were very easy that Brisbane players kicked. We had momentum for long periods but would get destroyed off a point going the other way for a lions goal. Maybe we could have been a bit closer with those goals going through.

Yes the missed shots were frustrating particularly the ones that were followed by an easy goal to them down the other end.

Conversion is our #1 issue. If we improved that other things would follow such as motivation and enthusiasm.

I was just pointing out that 45 i50 generally isn't enough and conceding 60 is too many. Both outside our season averages.

Outclassed and outskilled . Brisbane finished there chances and hurt on turnover. They broke a lot of tackles.
If we had more senior players play I think the result could have been a lot closer. Our effort was a lot better.
All our young players played well but each one of them had moments that cost us repeatedly through the game and showed they ain’t up to the speed and the moment of the game.
This will happen though with young players
So we play them and this will happen
So we have to be able to wear that as supporters.
Harry O
Cowan
Carroll
Motlop
Moir
Hollands
Through crucial misses , missed tackles, kicking , decision making, free kicks , easily moved. Could of been a different game if these lads were experienced

Yep 45 inside 50's is low - but I put that down to the Lions being elite last night. Their tackle pressure and ball use was exceptional. Throw in the fact the Lions injury list before the game consisted of Payne and McCarthy while ours had Kemp, Cottrell, McKay, Walsh, Saad, Silvagni & Newman (plus Smith) who are largely replaced with players like O'Farrell, F Young, Moir & Carroll - I don't see it being so much about lack of a "system"

Just wanted to highlight HOF's game.

I thought he took a giant leap last night and you could see that he feels he belongs at this level.

He reminds me of Michael Sexton but taller.

His ability to get to the front of a contest and one grab was on show last night. His disposal and vision are top quality as well.

With another 6-8 kgs on that huge frame, he could be our CHB for the next 12 years.

Comedy capers team execution against a super hot Brisbane outfit looking for a back to back flags.

I wonder how SOJ/ Newan, McKay, Walsh felt looking on at the comedy capers skill execution that was on display last night?

Carroll/Cowan/HOF and even Moir looked like decent young developing players.

Charlie tried hard and missed goals - again.
Pittonet was up for it - TDK is a now a limp running joke - must be unfit yeah?
McGovern is bi-polar one minute he does something awesome - the next he costs a goal out of a regulation brain fart.
Williams tried hard and added some leg speed to CBB a pity he has been injured every second week.
Fantasia all class break glass body - bye bye.
Cripps wasnt sick - but cant kick and is as guilty as anyone else making fundamental errors - his handballing has regressed big time.
Cerra was as bad as the worst kicks on ground for Carlton - so out of form...
O Hollands isnt an answer to any HBF question I would care to ask- play him on a wing where his skill execiution wont be as noticeably costly and his decision making isnt as tested as open field play
Docherty - see McGovern quote.
Weitering wasnt awful.
Motlop is a C grade mid with a D grade footy brain - no just no
Durdin is as bad as Motlop - only worse.
Fogarty had a shocker - again bye bye
Cincotta absolutely towelled by whoever he is was supposed to be shutting down VFL mate

Brisbane too much class.

Effort was there though cant deny that - but woweee talk about low skill killing you week in week out - and no Charlie goals to lift the team.

Onwards and upwards!

Keep the Voss bagging going- makes for funny reading - me personally I blame the tea person.

I have worked with elite athletes for over 40 years.

There is one thing that never changes. If you have no trust in what you do the basics fall away and quickly. Even worse in a team sport. It's like a disease
100%

It's linked to that old adage that life, not just sport, is played "above the shoulders"

If I'm unhappy at work, my head will say, "that's enough for today...bugger it, I'll do it tomorrow" or, "why hang around for 30 minutes to help out X, the boss approved his long service leave cause he sucks up to him...he made me jump through hoops and then reduced the leave length...stuff X, let him learn it himself"

So...people will see me walking to the car earlier than I used to...that's what people see...and they will call me lazy, selfish, entitled, cruising, over the hill whatever

But those people have NFI about WHY I'm only putting in 90% instead of 100%, or at times, 110%

Now..when I have colleagues who are also unhappy at work and doing the same thing, the organisation is in freefall

A quality coaching and footy department group next year will see us make finals at a minimum. Bookmark it!!!

Lets not kid ourselves.

Systems is definitely part of our woes - although not the whole issue.

Even if we had those players you mentioned we'd most likely have lost but the margin would probably have been closer.

We probably would have lost but I honestly believe the Lions have the best list in the comp, over the last 3 or 4 years have been able to consistently been able to put their best team out on the park and last night they were absolutely on in every facet.

And there is a massive difference between saying "We have no system" and "Systems is definitely part of our woes"

Motlop is barely VFL standard. I’m not sure where any positivity about him is coming from. His trade value is zero. Delist.

Hopefully that was Voss’ last game as coach. His time is over.
and yet Motlop is our 3rd leading goal kicker this season. So he is better than Fogarty Durdin Fantasia White Evans as a small forward. He is more of a threat to score than our awesome midfielders like Cripps Cerra Hewett Walsh and you can chuck in TDK as well. He is a kid that has become an easy target.

I am amazed at how far people can stretch to criticise Motlop.

Outside of his set shot last night he was quite good but yet still cops abuse.

Minor point imo

tge oppo systems are superior …simple as that and we get shown up.

He's going to be very very good.

Natural footballer, strong mark, good spoil, natural confidence, great leap, reads the game has excellent pace, much quicker than Weitering. Looks a future AA level key defender. IMO could be made into a key forward potentially as well.

Just needs games at AFL level and his body to grow out.

He's just an easy target. Far from the problem. Clearly our second best small forward behind a fit Zac Williams. And he's only 21 years old so obviously has a heap of scope to improve.

Not sure how much I love the midfield stuff but he was better last night in that area. Still don't like him getting that deep in defence in games - costly error with his deliberate rushed behind. Needs to work on his set shot kicking as well.

But the calls for him to be dropped or delisted don't make much sense to me. His effort is always there. Tackle pressure has been great this season. And his footskills in terms of threat rating + retention rating are one of the best at Carlton. Would be re-signing him personally.
