The driver is the lack of FDA regulation of processed foods in US and portion sizes/control. Europe actually has real food

Happens here too in those who consume higher levels of fast/processed foods. "Gluten intolerant" types (acknowledging it is real and somewhat common) can even eat the bread over there in some cases

Just a gross industry and country built around generating scale, profit margin, and farming their consumers to repeat buy shit products. The worst part is they don't even fund the healthcare on the otherside when those who are susceptible (poor) to the cheap products eventually breakdown physically
