Training 2026 Training Reports

So my first training session this morning, and a couple of random thoughts (and a shout out to the wonderful maddiemelb, on patrol with the telephoto - lovely to meet you)

Logue, CCJ and Hansen on individual programs to one side, and Goater walking laps - had a brief chat to Josh; he's being managed this week and will be in full training next week.

A lot of the drills focussed on transition from D50 kick-ins, both half ground and full ground, and a high intensity contested handball drill between two teams of 8-9, with the ball always in play from one of four gates.

If I had to pick one stand-out, it would probably be Goad - super mobile and clean hands.

Having expressed some scepticism about judging S&C from photos on the internet, I might get howled down for this, but to my eye, Zane Duursma has trimmed down markedly, so if that's a gauge on his fitness, he's in a good place.

Daniel Harris at the ground watching Sam go around - there's not much of the boy atm, but he held his own in the handball contest drill
Good to hear Sam Harris training with us

Would like to see our Tassie nga prospect Archie Devine training with us soon also and maybe give them both some vfl games later in the year

Thanks for the write ups, hard not to get excited based on our availability and some of the strides our younger blokes appear to be taking.

I’m interested in Colby and Fos - were you able to figure out from the drills where they are likely to be playing, and if they are mid if they are inside or outside?

You’d imagine Sheez, LDU and Wardlaw are starting mids with help from Parker and maybe Powell with Urqs as depth.

Duursma doesn't need to trim down… he needs to bulk up to withstand the rigours of the league.

Thanks for the feedback Merlin.

Although I thought Logue had come back injury free, so wondering why he's in an individual program (all feedback was that he'd come back in the best nick ever)??

Also not sure Zane could come back any trimmer than what he was..

I should have been more specific. I saw a fair bit of Duursma in the 2s last year, and he was pretty thick through the core; to my eye today he's a lot leaner around the hips, thighs.

Where did I read Konstanty has also done some training in the backline? He has the attributes on face value with his speed, agility, tackling intent...

Could be an interesting option.
Perhaps he's matching up one on one with Dovaston to see who's starting round 1!

Anyone surprised that Corr and Coleman Jones have pinged a calf? It was $1.01 to occur. Unfortunately both players bodies are genuinely shot.

The small/medium defender position is a Luke McDonald injury away from being a crisis and it’s
O’Sullivan, Hardeman and McDonald can all play through that position. Athletically both Logue and Thredgold should be capable of defending more mobile players. Theres the unknown about Goater and Harvey but they could be in the side as the year progresses. Then there is break glass in case of emergency player like Bailey Scott who has played as a small/medium defender.

Hence why ssp signing of a decent defender is a must have. McDonald and goater both with injury history's too

Wardlaw is top 3 for kicking inside 50 at north

Goal assist averages over the last 2 years prove it

He is capable of hitting 45m low flat darts. When he hits those kicks, he looks ridiculously good. However, he is equally as capable of over kicking the footy and kicking grubbers and floaters.

I still can't wrap my head around why CCJ was retained. Plenty higher upside and capable depth ruckman available in the state leagues.

Absolutely.

Goater, Fisher, McDonald, Hardeman and Harvey just isn't enough depth. Especially when you'd consider at least a few of them injury prone.

I'm pretty keen to trial Konstanty back there.

O Sullivan is a midfielder and distributing half back, if he is called upon to play the small/ medium lockdown role then something has gone horribly wrong. Hardeman also is a distributor and rebounder, not a lockdown defender.

Hardeman is a fantastic one on one defender. In fact his best games in the under 18 championships was when he locked down on dangerous small and medium forwards.

He is a genuine defender who has a defend first attitude.

Haven’t seen it at AFL level, albeit in a small sample size. Archer, McDonald and Corr are the 3 I would classify as pure lockdown defenders and 1 is out for the year, 1 is never available and done a calf and the other is a great servant however question marks are on him for obvious reasons.

If Hardeman can become that 1 on 1 defender who can lockdown, great. However I think the club has taken a massive gamble backing in archer, goater and Corr and not bringing anyone in, so far 2 have gone down and the other one let’s wait and see.

The beauty of Hardeman is that he can defend and attack when the situation demands. He's not either/or. They're the staple in the good sides.

Any of the 42 players who aren't sure where they fit in should he knocking on the coaches door asking to play down back.

The club was kidding themselves not adding anyone over the off season as a small defender. Fact that now lost Archer they are absolutely kidding themselves if go into the season with what we have.

McDonald is 30 and body breaking down

Goater hasn’t played more then a handful games of AFL football and played less then half a dozen total games in 2 years

Hardeman is a kid who is unproven 1 on 1. More of a distributor

Harvey is untried and most definitely a distributor.

Corr is 31 and body been going south for 2 years and counting, also better on key position players.
they tried didnt they... Budarick, Sarcevich to name a couple

talking of FS, it is also surely a positive that Aiden Mc is training with us as opposed to Syd too

Hardeman hasn’t really had much of a crack on the smaller zippy small forwards but he played a number of good roles last year locking down on direct opponents.

His best effort was keeping Zac Bailey to 1 goal earlier in the year against Brisbane.

Kept Hoskin-Elliott to a goal and 9 disposals while have 28 himself against the pies in round 11.

Kept Martin Frederick to less than 10 disposals a few weeks later against Freo.

Kept Corey Durdin Scoreless against Carlton
