List Mgmt. 2026 - What do we need?

Well we need a High performance manager. Unsure why Phil Merriman is leaving unless they have someone who can in mind who can perform miracles with Young

it's pretty apparent from my seats directly above the 50m line that Freddie has been given a role to cover space, not go to tackle. Don't know why that is a preferable strategy but it is a change from last year when we saw him do those chase downs, and is consistent with JLo's defensive strategy to cover space in zone formations than 1 on 1, like is working nicely for Hawthorn and Geelong who play tight 1 on 1 to create turnovers from 50:50s rather than intercept marks.

IMO, he played the role he was given (even though I consider this defensive role is flawed) and he was our 4th highest goal kicker.

So, no complaints from me except for the misses on goal, but so did Andy and Caleb and Reid so no one misses that criticism.

'that Freddie has been given a role to cover space, not go to tackle'

Really? It's like having seventeen men on the ground, refuses to assist at any contest, only seems to chase when he is sure not to get there in time. Get him out I reckon.

Shuffle some of our players to allow quicker/skilled ball movement out of the back half:

Ins from our last game:

B: Pearce Cox Wagner
HB: Simpson Ryan Clarke
C: Brayshaw Young Chapman
HF: Switta Treacy Reid
FF: Voss Jackson Bolton
R: Darcy Erasmus Serong

INT: Amiss, Johnson, Worner, Walker, (1st pick in draft or trade prospect - another Midfielder)

We need another big bodied mid in the center bounces - either Ras or Johnson with Brashaw the one I think that needs to come out onto one of the wings. Think Chapman might offer us more on a wing also

Carrying too many iffy kicks in the backline. Walker and Simpson have to come in for Worner and Banners. Gives us pace and a great user in Simpson, Walker great lockdown defender and has the tools to create from half back with his pace and decent kick, he just needs the confidence to run and carry. Harsh on Karl maybe? he is a tough nut and throws his body into contests but his disposal is a liability back there. Smart teams will just leave the likes of Worner, Banners and Pearce free in the pocket to receive short pass from a kick in knowing they will likely kick it straight back to them.

Andy and Caleb really need to fix their goal kicking, I have no confidence in either of them lining up from 40m directly in front in a big final.

Andy should be the skipper not Caleb. Caleb lacks the maturity in the heat of battle. Loses his shit too easily when being tagged or things aren't going his way. I haven't looked into it stats wise but I'd be willing to bet we have a much better record when AB captains the side

No I didn’t. It was the worst game I’ve seen by a player since Walker 2022 v Pies.

But I also saw him be one of our best on ground a few weeks earlier vs Port and saw him be among our best in the 5 other games he polled coaches votes in.

His pressure needs to improve there’s no questions about it. But this talk of getting rid of him is an insane overreaction for a guy who’s been among our teams top 5 players for multiple games this year. That’s more games than Switta has ever polled in in a season. Even more than Schultz in his best year here.

Not to mention he’s only behind Amiss as our leading goal kicker over there last 4 years.

You just know that if Sturt had a season like this where he went at 1.5 goals and 2.3 tackles a game (more than he’s ever averaged btw) and got coaches votes in 5 games people would be praising him and you’d be called insane for wanting him gone.
Freddy has never gone at 1.5 goals a game. I think Sam went at 1.6 last year. Plus one has played about 30 games and the other 100.

And one has the knees of an 80 year old and can’t even get on the field.

Seriously, the guy drafted a year earlier having played about 70 less games isn’t the home run you thought it was

1.3 vs 1.6 is an extra goal every three games so really not worth nitpicking that either. Sturts highest tackle season is 1.5 a game so he’s actually doing less without the ball.

Not trying to score home runs, just pointing out that your stats were incorrect which I think you knew. Freddy best season was 2023 when he averaged 1.37 goals a game.

Hey, but you were the one making the argument that Frederick kicks more goals than Bolton and that was 1.25 v 1.22. Nitpicking?

Ryan Pearce Simpson
Johnson Cox Clark
Wagner Young Brayshaw
Reid Treacy Switta
Amiss Voss Bolton
Darcy Jackson Serong
Erasmus Chapman Dudley Walker Fredrick

I like Johnson off HB rotating with Young/ Chapman
MJ has all the Mundy characteristics to be be a solid HB rotation - size, step, skill (+ speed)

Start Jacko mid and rotate with Ras, and I’d even love to see JT in there at times, he is explosive, fearless.

Duds/ Freddy to free up Bolton/ Reid to push up ground and allow Brayshaw to go inside.

Walker/ Simpson/ Clark rotation

Amiss to be the “Sturt” we always thought we’d have.

Nahhh I said he kicked more goals than Bolton and Switta this season and has kicked the second most goals of anyone in the team since 2022.

The stats comparison I posted is just there to show that his pressure stats are not that far off compared to those two. I don’t even think I mentioned Shai’s goal per game average in any of my posts

God forbid someone rounds up to make a general point. I’ll edit so as not to deceive anyone who may call for Sturt to be sacked if he had a 1.3 goal 2.3 tackle season but not a 1.5 goal 2.3 tackle season.

Talor Byrne could be an option a little down the draft. Hard nut that can roam up the ground, puts on good pressure and can kick multiple goals in games games
We have been linked a lot to Talor Byrne on the mock draft social media. Similar to how we were linked a lot to Wagner and Simpson the years we drafted them. He's projected to go around pick 40ish on the mocks.

Exciting prospects after another preseason:
  • Jackson training as a mid/utility rather than a forward
  • Another preseason under the belt for Reid
  • Whole preseason of Treacy, Amiss and Voss working together
  • Full preseason into Dudley
  • Another preseason into Ras and Johnno
  • Simpson training to be that rebounding half back we need
  • Full preseason for Darcy and Young.
Need to get this summer right, then the team can make a charge.

And will take that extra goal every third game every single time… esp given how close our games have been this season!

I don't agree about the draw, but we did fail to caapitalise on our games against weaker teams
We won as many hard ones / vs top 8 teams as we lost easy ones vs the rest. Whilst it was an easier draw, not sure the results we did and didn’t achieve related to the draw much at all

Where is sturt at in terms of recovery time, but also size and fitness. At his best he’s adding another 2 goals a game for us… and god knows we need them!

Are you aware he's just had a knee reconstruction for an ACL? He's not going to be playing AFL next year, and then it will be a tough decision to make on whether he gets another contract.

Improving skills out of the backline, low cost 2 year contract for Mitch McGovern ?

Improving kicking can be fixed at the other end of the kick too, structuring in such a fashion to allow a player space around to run into means the kick doesn't need to be laser accurate and they will still mark it uncontested - but it also means if the opposition can create a contest we probably have nobody at ground level to defend it coming back quickly.

If we have someone who can have the license to run the ball the 10-15m and then kick 60m towards our goal (or more specifically 60m towards the tall hanging back from the contest - setting up for a contest 50m down the line is where our talls are clustered now, so have someone like Freddy/Amiss 20-40m behind them who knows the ball will carry over the pack.

We can do that if our talls 50m from the kicker are exceptional at creating a contest, there's going to be panicked dump kicks and they need to not be outmarked, such that we can afford to not have our players all there.
