Injury Update: Modified program until Christmas due to groin soreness - 26/11
  • He is hardly in shocking state. Maybe 3kg over his ideal playing weight right now. Also has a minor injury issue at the moment.

    Reports of back soreness

  • AFL news 2023: Jake Stringer dealing with back soreness

Jake Stringer was excellent in Essendon match simulation last week but soreness has forced him to ease his training loads back. Get all the latest from Bomberland here.

Essendon forward Jake Stringer has been put on light duties to overcome some back soreness before the practice matches ramp up.
The superstar goal kicker was absent from Bombers’ main training on Thursday as the rest of his teammates completed a two-hour session at Tullamarine.
Stringer, 28, was excellent in some match simulation playing mostly forward last Wednesday, but the matchwinner had to wind back his training this week.
Instead, Stringer completed some indoor training and was seen in a lengthy conversation with medicos on the boundary line late in the session.

The Bombers said Stringer was dealing with some soreness and were hopeful he will increase his training loads from Saturday in a bid to hit the season at full fitness in a dangerous forward role.
Stringer signed a bumper new deal after an outstanding 2021 season, however his preparation for last season was severely limited by a debilitating pre-season groin problem.

He kicked 25 goals across 15 games last year and produced a brilliant late burst to pip Sydney Swans in Round 16 at the MCG, but did not finish inside the top-10 of the best and fairest.
Stringer will attempt to rediscover his best form under new coach Brad Scott who has been lauded for his impact at Essendon helping simplify the coaching message, ramp up the forward pressure and stiffen the defensive operations over summer.

Hamstring tightness, still in contention for round 1
  • Hamstring tightness having an mri today.

I’ll shout it from the rooftops. He needs to strip his body if he wants to prolongue his career, reality is he could be done at the end of next year.

This talk of we’ve figured out a different program which will allow him to be fit for the start of the season is absolute cap. There’s a reason he keeps breaking down, it’s because his body can’t handle it.

  • Not playing this week. In full training but still has some of his training block to complete so he is ready to go.

Will play this weekend, but could be VFL
  • Forward Jake Stringer has been declared fit for selection after overcoming a hamstring injury.

Despite being deemed “medically available” by senior coach Brad Scott last week, the 28-year-old was held over for an extra week to further build fitness.

Now having checked every required box, GM of High Performance Daniel McPherson says Stringer will suit up for his first game of the season, with a return via the VFL or AFL yet to be decided.

“Jake’s progressed through all his training, he’s ticked off all he needs to do,” McPherson said.

“From a high-performance perspective, he’s good to go and will be available for selection this weekend.”

Ruled out due to plantar fascia pain
  • Ruled out due to plantar fascia pain
Essendon forward Jake Stringer will miss this weekend’s clash with Sydney after failing to complete main training this week with a foot complaint.

General Manager of Performance Daniel McPherson said the club will start the deloading process immediately to give Stringer the best chance to recover quickly.

“Jake was restricted with discomfort in his plantar fascia this week during some speed running at training. He won’t play this weekend, but we’re hopeful the injury will recover quickly,” McPherson said.

“We’ll know more after he’s had a few days off the foot, but the plan will be to deload him, complete some cross-training in the meantime, and then start to reload the foot and progress him back into training reasonably quickly.”

Running following foot injury, hoping to play again in 2023
  • Starting to get his power back, test to return
  • Forward Jake Stringer may also return to the Dons’ best 22 after managing a foot complaint, with the 29-year-old potentially playing his first game since round 19.

“Jake’s starting to get his power back from that foot complaint, which is really promising,” McPherson said.

“His training loads are progressing and he’s continuing to tick off the necessary metrics towards a return to play. Whether he’s progressed enough to play this week or not, we’ll have to wait and see.”

Listed as test ahead of GWS game (R23)

GM of Performance Daniel McPherson said all players must get through main training without issue to be considered for selection.

“We’re really pleased [they] are all close to a return, and provided they have a good week, we expect they’ll be pushing to be available for selection,” McPherson said.

“Once we get through main training, we’ll be better placed to make a call on whether or not each of them is ready to go.”

Surgery on his foot, should be back in training by January
  • Had surgery on his foot before Round 24 game, should be back in training by January. Also noted as being a forward. As I recall it's a plantar fascia, which matches the description but isn't mentioned by name here.
ESSENDON is hoping Jake Stringer to be back into full training at the start of 2024 after an injury-hit end to this season.

Stringer had foot surgery ahead of the Bombers' final game, having struggled through his return the previous week in Essendon's belting at the hands of Greater Western Sydney.

The Bombers expect the forward to be in full training again at the start of the new year.

"Sometimes he felt really good at training and then other days it crept up on him really quickly. It just got to the point where we rolled the dice with him in the GWS Giants game up there and he was quite sore post that game. Once that game snuffed out our finals chances we chucked him straight in to get surgery after that game," said Dan McPherson.
