AFL Player 48: Liam McMahon - Re-signed for another year! - 10/9

Bruno, what do you see as the difference between McMahon and Jack Gunston? As Gunston to me (I don't have his running times) is the type who isn't necessarily explosive but relies on smarts and is clinical in front of goal. I see McMahon in that mould and it is impressive he has kicked multiple goals in 3 out of 4 games with our disaster. There is probably a fine line between a Mitch Brown and Jack Gunston that makes a big difference, and I am guessing McMahon hasn't had a pre season for a few years.

Gunston and Brown both had aerobic excellence

But Gunston is pure class - like say Jamie Elliott. Not a contested mark but a highly skilled competitor who finds a way to beat his opponent regardless of the weather or the intensity of the game.

Brown was good when it was easy to get out on a very long lead to the open side but totally lost in any sort of scrap. Could be easily shut down if the opposition bothered to put any specific effort into doing so.

Who really cares if he is Mitch Brown. Reason I would sign him is he will be a rookie back up that has a bit of leadership experience. He fills a short term role.

He’s the kind of guy who makes a competent third tall behind two of Caddy / Wright / May / Draper. Will make the most of his chances and force the oppositions third tall defender (usually their most dangerous intercept player aka Ridley) to actually have to stay accountable.

Edwards, McMahon and Langford probably only have one spot in the 22 available between them with a fully fit list - assuming they all stay of course.

If we can find a guy who’ll keep a Tom Stewart or James Sicily honest by putting a couple of goals a week through in the MSD then we’ve done well. He doesn’t need to be a star.

Also the same role Mitch Brown was best suited for; a third tall playing alongside (say) Daniher and Hooker.

Gunston is basically the elite version of a third tall, who can actually play as a genuine KPP when needed.

That sums it and for me how competitive/adaptive he is will determine where he fits on the Brown to Gunston spectrum. He has only just started and will be hungry as a mature ager. He did halve a couple of contests he was out of position with smarts which is a very big positive, and those snapped half chances I don't remember with Brown.

I have seen a bit of McMahon this year and last, and as mentioned he often has separation on his opponent. I guess the higher the level you go the better the athletes you are dealing with and sometimes that luxury won't be had so smarts and strong hands will be required. One of McMahon's draft profiles kept mentioning his athleticism and said "His ability to gain separation is largely credit to his speed".

He's Mitch Brown 2.0 but not as good and you've all fallen for it...again.

In that he can give us 4-5 reasonable years as a depth player? Because he’s nothing like Brown as a player. Brown was a running flanker in a big’s body.

He’s Ben King that didn’t go to the correct private school and doesn’t have a generational midfield ramming the ball down his throat.

Never go full Mitch Brown, Zach Package

Think we would be ruing re-signing Edwards after the acl. Good depth for Langford coverage as third tall but we shouldn't have Edwards, Langford and mcmahon all on the list.

Brown was a 196cm forward who didnt play as a KPF, didn't have a physical presence and did a substantial portion of his scoring crumbing goals.

As you've pointed out, at least Brown had a massive work rate and engine and had a game outside of crumbing goals.

Was Brown really a crumber? Thought he was more exceptional at finding space outside the back and then finishing from a set shot.

Do tend to agree that McMahon looks to lack the competitiveness required to fill a KPF role but he has earned himself another year to see if he can improve in that area. He also could just be a difficult enough matchup that it doesn't matter Ben Brown style.

Agree that Mitch Brown did work back and find space well, too.

I don't see McMahon as being a potentially difficult match up. Nowhere near as long as Ben Brown and doesn't strike me as having the speed off the mark.

I haven't addressed the Gunston point because those who are explaining the differnece between what McMahon has shown and Mitch Brown are addressing why the Gunston comparison doesn't even leave the station. If he doesn't show any of Mitch Brown's play as a flanker, how can he be anything other than the veteran Gunston? I assume the comparison to Gunston is of the player at sokmething near his peak.

Not arguing that but the problem is we have re-signed those two already. In a perfect world jones would get the flick, maybe the play is shop Langford around?
Yep - Jones was playing himself off the list.
Enters a contest and leaves it with his foot pointing the wrong way plus a new contract extension - bizarre list management!!
WTF are we doing? Very charitable from the club, but I think the time for that shit is over!
We need capable footballers.
We know what Jones can & cannot do - he has been given plenty of time/chances.

Writing off a player after his second game because he isn't Jack Gunston already is such an Essendon thing to do.

the fact he's not playing like riley thilthorpe means we should drop him immedietly tbh. shit player. boot him off the list.
