Player Watch #8: Jake Lever – Signed until 2028

There’s no doubting Lever will be better for the experience of playing one on one against other talls - the question is whether we can afford to let him learn that in the seniors while our defence goes to s**t. Wasn’t he meant to be beating Hogan 1v1 in the preseason?

If he magically becomes a half decent key defender in the second half of the year then yes. Though more likely it's costing us games.

Issue there is Hogan isn't an amazing 1vs1 player either, like Franklin he uses his pace and endurance to burn defenders but leave him one out and he is pretty easy to neutralise

Next trade period, Lever and a first for Doedee, final offer.

Suckers. We would have thrown in Petracca aswell

Fox footy doing a bit of a hatchet job on Lever before, comparing their first 5 games this season. Doedee with a little better stats.
Ignoring completely that it's his first 5 games so it's not a true reflection of his averages as it could go up and down meanwhile ignoring that Lever is completely out of form and playing a new position.
Melbourne supporters have been more brutal on his first 4 games than anyone else but geez you can go from media darling to punching bag fast just because you get some extra $

If you take a huge offer like that, the expectation is going to come.

Same thing happened to Tom Boyd. Same thing happened with Scully.

Also Doedee will keep putting up those same or better stats for the majority of the season, because it's the system the Crows play that lets our half backs perform so well.

That's what a lot of Crows supporters, including myself, tried to point out during last years trade period on this forum... and copped a lot of abuse for it.

I agree mate and like I said no one has been more vicious than Melbourne supporters themselves but it's not like Lever is crap, he's horribly out of form.

The reason the tension existed over the trade was adelaide supporters were trying to say he was s**t whilst demanding 2 first rounders as well. Can't be s**t and highly valuable at the same time.

But it's up to Melbourne and Lever now to turn him into a gun player. However teams have gone to school on him in a worse defence than adelaides and are exposing him, that doesn't mean it's the end of the world after 4 games.

You ask what a buyer is willing to pay, not what you'd be willing to pay.

We asked for two firsts because Melbourne were willing to pay it, no other reason.

It's the same reason Carlton asked what they did for Gibbs, which was way over what he was worth as well.

If it makes you feel better Doedee is the GOAT and Lever is terrible k.

This is the stupidity of ALL AFL Clubs, and partly due to free agency ruining things. They all make offers that clearly demonstrate the value of the player to them, and then refuse to attribute that same value in dollar terms.

Every club does it - we did it with Gibbs the first time, and sucked it up the second.

Stupid AFL.

Lever as a junior rebounding was his main strength, he was also a very good 1 on 1 defender. At Adelaide though he never had to develop his 1 on 1 game and now he's playing catch up in that area.

How dare you come onto this board with this opinion

It's a big step up from being a good one on one defender at U18 level. Yes the guy will improve, but by how much? I still can't believe he's 194 or 195 cm... plays like a smaller bloke and he's got 20 or 30 odd more games under his belt than OMac. This isn't a raw 17 year old getting thrown into the deep end and it's not like he never had to contest the ball at the Crows.

Both of you should be banned.

If you ban me Topkent would be out of business

He was easily worth a top 10 pick. The downgrade from our first rounder this year to pick 35 last year really isn’t a big enough loss to be upset about even if he flops.
That’s a strange way of looking at it. The downgrading of a first rd pick in a strong draft to pick 35 in a shallow draft is not a big deal? Especially after giving up pick 10 as well?

Lever may end up being worth it but if he doesn’t, you’ve paid a s**t load, there’s no denying it.

It was a heavy price but Lever was a high talented junior that has a proven record at the top level. He's just out of form in a new system.

The good clubs nail picks through out the draft, the first round is not the be all end all.

It was: Lever, pick 35, 2018 3rd

For

Pick 10, 2018 1st, 2018 4th

3 pieces for 3 pieces. Melbourne got the proven talent and can still draft for the future. Adelaide improved their draft position.
