The Victorian government is a step closer to signing an Aboriginal treaty

“Victoria has been on a path to Treaty since 2016 when the state government committed to an agreement described as "the embodiment of Aboriginal self-determination". Three years later, the 'Treaty Act' passed parliament and the state established the assembly to be its Aboriginal representative body. The Coalition supported the legislation to establish the Treaty Authority but in January 2024 revealed it did not believe a Treaty would be the best way forward to improve outcomes for Indigenous Victorians. Liberal Leader John Pesutto said there were concerns about the "secrecy" surrounding the process, cultural heritage laws and the traditional owner settlement act. Earlier this month, the state government said it was also on track for Treaty negotiations to commence this year. Premier Jacinta Allan last October was adamant the Voice to Parliament vote was not going to change the state's resolve to deliver Treaty.”

the search function is so bad, this is the most relevant thread i could find.

great piece by melissa lucashenko on social cohesion.

"Australia does have a serious problem with social cohesion, but it’s no good pretending it’s recent."

Job Done! A Treaty is signed. What a travesty. A treaty that the majority of Victorians did not asked for and that was rejected in the last national attempt. Even 40% of indigenous people did not want it.

Now ask yourself, who benefits? Answer: follow the money! It is always the money / power.

New Zealand has a treaty with their indigenous Māori. Has that benefitted them as a group? No, the group is generally worse off than those that are not Māori.

The concept of "US vs THEM" is the foundation of every conflict. EVERY conflict. Bar None.

The concept of "WE" should be the foundation of every policy a long with ETHICAL considerations. WE are Australian and will help all Australians in need. But helping THEM is what we are asked to do ... when they are actually US.

The concept of "WE" should be put in stone and incorporated into OUR cultural concepts.

Don't make a person with Aboriginal heritage above someone else, if you do that makes a "THEM", to be attacked. Have someone with Aboriginal knowledge important for their cultural knowledge. Make Aboriginal language a first qtr of year 7 language to be learned by all Australian kids. I learned French and German. Now we should learn Indonesian and Aboriginal. With Chinese and Spanish.

Big money is doing what they did in New Zealand. Indigenous Australians have claim to much of the continent. Whatch big money take it off them and us. We cannot stop it as they own our politicians. First Nation: Gina owns them.

Our only hope is to know what is happening and vote for real people.

The ALP in Victoria took treaty to two elections and won in landslides.

Suck it up.

It was but in the absence of a referendum, any future government who includes it as part of their campaign will have every right to tear it up. Hopefully they would do the right thing first and actually see what it has or hasn't improved rather than just scrap it. They will have years of data to assess given the Libs are at least 4 years away from winning given onp will cost them seats this election.

I will not, you disingenuous so-and-so

Did Victorians vote for treaty? Was it a part of the last 2 Victorian elections? NO

Victorians Voted agains a poor opposition. If you do not understand that you... have an agenda.

The definition of racism is to have one race given more than another race.

If you disagree: then please define racism is some other terms that I can explain to my kids.

Seriously... suck it up is your thought process. Not was is good for anyone?

I talk to Māori about their NZ treaty. Their comments are that they have successfully stopped over-fishing and some other things. But the Māori are not better off. They remain in the lower socioeconomic group 50 YEARS LATER.!
I wanted to ask who actually benefitted from the treaty, but that was a question too far. I can ask it here though… who wins from a treaty in Victoria and Australia?
Who paid for the Yes vote... which was everywhere? I’m not sure I saw a single No advertisement. The government was not allowed to pay for the campaign, so who did?
Follow the money. The banks gave a lot to the Yes vote. But why would banks care? Who owns the banks? We all do, nominally… but only a few have actual voting rights and control of the board.
As much as anyone might think that The Voice and Treaty are about indigenous people gaining something meaningful, the concern is that it is actually about making indigenous people THEM and non-indigenous people US… which will ultimately divide us. And then profiting from it.

So Donakebab you suck up the knowledge that you are part of the division of Australians and not helpful at all.

He, New
OMG …. Tim Wilson LMFAO

Tim Wilson is the worst of us.
Obviously beholden to big money.

He is willing to give up 17 billion per year for his seat in the house. 17 billion per year

The LNG people have made their money back from the cost of creating their LNG plants. The risk is done. Now they need to pay us to sell our resources while making tidy profit themselves.

Any Politician that is against this is working for THEM and not US.

Tony Abbot is working for them. He was always working for THEM. You can bet Dictator Dan is working for them.

When will we have a politician that has integrity and will work for us, the average citizen

Yeah it was, Labor had it as a policy and the people voted them back in.
