Initially I was enjoying the game but after about 6 rounds into a season I have just about had enough. Changed sliders etc but the AI just do to many dumb things, the constant misses from close range, smothering etc does my head in.

Positional changes of players I have now seen Grundy in the back pocket for the pies with Adams in the ruck and for me they constantly put Astbury or Rance on the wing and grimes in the ruck. At one stage soldo and nankervis were across half back.

After playing 6 rounds on 7.5m qts I though ill sim rest of year and see how the off field stuff goes. Kieran Strachan won the brownlow and rising star and Jack Martin won the coleman and Dan Rioli was Best and Fairest and looking at the stats for season Bolton was my top goal scorer with Rioli not even in top 5 for goals or possesions.

Havent bothered with online and I think ill leave this game until we can actually play against mates. The games just become to much the same against the AI.

Lag hasn't been a problem for me. One thing I do is just spam speckies in online because it's so easy to do. Made a kid rage quit from it and probably pissed off Killer Creed with it. Hopefully that makes it into one of his videos so I can watch him rage

Just had a game where it was so laggy it wouldn't even register my inputs to spoil and mark. Hopefully it's just a one off, has been fine previously b

Happy to answer general dev questions, actually trying to stay away from commenting on the game, as said, it speaks for itself.

We're always looking at alternatives, never complacent about where our engine is at relative to out-of-the-box solutions. We've released games using Unity for mobile (try AO Tennis for free on iOS/Android). There is definitely a fluid movement to and from third party engines, and certainly there are strengths and weaknesses for both the big players, Unity and Unreal, but neither are particularly "sports friendly" and can be extremely expensive, taking away from the actual budget of the game itself. I am sure PUBG regret it every day that they used Unreal.

Our artists would love to use Unreal or Unity, life is so much easier for them, but the coders, not so much. There is also the lack of control, if something goes wrong, we're a small developer making niche sports titles, our ability to get changes from the larger engine providers is suspect - imagine finding a game breaking bug, right before submission, and you can't get them to help in time, you would totally miss your date.

The most compelling thing is control, we are the only video games company in Australia that is a licensee, developer, publisher, distributor, and as we are fast learning outside of games, it is important to control the supply chain. It's only since we took this approach that we could make our dates.

All of that said, if I was starting today, or didn't have an Engine of my own, I would definitely go third party.

Cheers for that. Definitely makes a lot of sense.

And not to set a wrong example and to bring the discussion back on topic: I made a two player AFL game in Microworlds for a high school project in about '99.

The first Aussie Rules "game" I wrote was also at school, Frankston High - a management style game on a BBC Micro in 1982 :)

Has anybody else found that all of the games in Career mode seem to finish really close? Like when it gets to the last quarter whoever is losing seems to come flying home (either Ai or myself). I've played 10 games and the margins have been 6 point loss, 2 point win, 7 point loss, 1 point win, 50 point win, 63 point win, 3 point win, 3 point win, draw, 1 point win.
Nope in Pro Mode my last 10 games were at least 30 point smashings. My first game in the pre-season with GWS was a 150 point murder of the Bulldogs.

That said I just play forward so am getting all the hard work of the computer

I'm currently using the following camera:

End-To-End
Distance: Mid
Zoom: 30
Height: 45
Rotation Speed: 29
Movement Speed: 50
Marking: Look at Landing

Here are some images of how it looks:

Downsides:

Free kicks from out on the full look like this:

AFL Evolution 2_20200410162515.jpg

There's no way to rotate the camera. I'd much rather it looked like a kick in from a behind or like it usually does. Also, I cannot rotate the camera when taking a free kick elsewhere. If I'm no the wing and want to look inside I can't. I would have thought in these instances the right stick would be rotate view but it isn't.

The other downside is it doesn't pause when switching. This has caused me to handball/kick in the wrong direction on more than one occasion. I haven't fiddled with Movement Speed yet as I don't know what it does. Other than that I am pretty happy with how this all looks.

Now questions:

- is there a way to grab the ball out of the ruck? I've had a couple of around the ground ruck contests where the opposition moves out of the contest but if I do nothing my ruck just taps to advantage rather than grabbing the ball.

- What do the stars next to the stats here mean? I am assuming it is the vital skills for the position? Also, what is the current player level?

I think WW have missed a trick by not having some sort of way to get an explanation of what the particular attributes do as well. I'd like to know things exactly what attributes do. In Football Manager I can hover over a stat and see what it does (I'm hovering over the Off the Ball attribute. It may not show it but in this sense I know what I hovered over, also, the mouse gets removed in PrtScn):

It would have been nice to have something similar for AFL Evo2 as well. Is there a way to contact WW to offer up these sort of suggestions/bugs? Doing it via Facebook just seems like a good way to get lost in the crowd.

It’s still way too easy to upgrade players. It’s at the point where I just don’t train them.

Before my time but I wish I cut my teeth on Basic, might have understood everything better and made a career out of it instead of just a hobby for the last 20 years. Thought about making a Football Manager style AFL management game in Unity for a while to hone my C# but it would be a lot of work lol. I'll stick to making 2-3 levels of a platformer before I lose interest and move on to my next big idea.

Pretty fun game. Decent representation of the sport. I actually think Huddo's commentary is really good.

Things I've noticed that need improving though:
- sometimes the AI will just boot the ball massively out of bounds for no apparent reason. Im not certain if this is related to difficultly but I suspect it is. Was happening heaps on Senior difficulty.
- the sound isn't there yet. Kick a goal in the GF I want to hear a huge roar. And enough of the chants after every goal!
- Its very hard to get a passage of play going when the ball on the run. Things just happen too fast and are too hard to follow. Evo 1 had the ability to change the speed of the game to slow. Not sure why its removed. I use the target selector button a lot (R1) and flick the right stick to find targets., and I use the radar a ton. Works pretty well when kicking from marks and frees, but maybe they could introduce a mechanic where you push R1 and kick and the game will automatically try and kick to the most open player in front of you.
- Set shots are way, way too easy. Surely a simple mechanic can be introduced that makes it harder.

As for that Bug Ant boss dude coming here and having a go at the makers of the game - didn't they make that AO tennis game and Rugby League 2 lol?

Turn the wind indicators off

Or just whack this on when it's time to take the kick for goal

so can’t you use the sliders for that?

Even with the sliders it’s still quite quick and hard to aim chip kicks perfectly.

update: after playing about 2 hours today I started getting dizzy and had to take a nap! Be a pro camera switching and spinning around can get a bit much after a while!

I may pinch your camera setup. I haven't played around with the default settings yet.

As for ruck, I don't think so. Nothing that I can see in any instruction, so I don't think it's possible. Would be cool to be able to do, though.

One thing I find annoying is you can't move your man when taking a kick unless you play on. Which is frustrating when kicking in after an OOTF, kicking in, so I can walk a bit closer to the mark and then play on. If that makes sense. If I played on from where I'm taking the kick (out of bounds), it's out of bounds and throw in. I seem to recall Evo1 allowing you to move forward and back as long as you stay on your line? I would like that freedom.

Things they hopefully fix, in no particular order

- The players sizes/shapes. Max Gawn the ruckman the same size as 168cm Caleb Daniel. Nat Fyfe and McGovern the same body shape as skinny Lewis Jetta.

- The ruck bug actually really annoys me. "Oh boy oh boy I'm going Melbourne so I can play as Max Gawn.." who lasts one hitout then disappears for the rest of the entire game whilst some unknown midfield spud starts taking the ruck.

- Ranked online games with custom teams and players is ****ing moronic. Takes any interest i had away from doing it.

- The kick ins are a total farce. Have 1 occasionally 2-3 campaigners in the square with me.

- AI quite often getting the footy, turning and booting it straight out of bounds.

- Team ratings obviously.

- The absolutely garbage crowd sounds. Ugh!

Still got some massive issues.

Way too easy. Playing on the hardest setting and still winning by 100 plus Isn’t fun

Had twice as many disposals and goals as the next best but still dropped the next week.

Ruckmen taking it out of the ruck in a throw in and snapping a goal from 60?!

Rucks playing back flank

List of gripes would be endless.

Also there’s an annoying bug when the ball is stuck on the ground and nobody can pick it up. Have to give away a free to get the game going again.

I agree, very off-putting response from them, not to mention them laugh reacting to your comment. I’ve never really understood the love for the first AFL Live, sure they might’ve been further ahead at this point but there’s no way of knowing that. Evo 2 in my opinion is way better and more enjoyable than any other AFL game

It doesn’t phase me that he laughed at my response at all. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion (clearly shown with the thread turning its focus to this topic) but still Ross won’t comment on Evo 2, speaks volumes like he says. AFL Live 1 was only as good as it was because it was that or no footy game at all. Evolution 1 wasn’t as fun as Live but to me Evolution 2 is the best game we’ve gotten especially because of sliders available. Again, my opinion 💯

What do you mean that or not footy game? Even in 2011, Wicked Witch had an AFL game release alongside Live 1. Not to mention the zillion other sub-par AFL titles before it.

Pause and un-pause fixes that for me
