AFL Round 18 Coll v Suns Postmatch Discussion -Toasts - Roasts

I don't think players from either team were holding back last night, it's not in their mentality or competitive spirit.

Compare the way we played last night to how we played against Hawthorn or North. When we go hard for four quarters, it's obvious.

Don't get me wrong, the Suns were good last night. But we were missing Dawes, Jolly, Shaw, Didak, Wellingham, Toovey, Brown, Beams....and we only really put in one quarter of high intensity [see all of our games earlier in the year]. Good signs for the Suns, but I think some are taking a little too much from it. :thumbsu:

Why would anyone be critical of a nine goal interstate victory against a side coming off a win, especially since we were missing Didak, Jolly, Wellingham, Dawes, Toovey and Shaw (not to mention Brown). That's a third of a Premiership side missing right there, and we are smashing teams.

and Beams. That's 7 players who will definitely come back into our best 22.

I was disappointed will let 75 points against us but we were missing 2 important members of our miserly back 6.

A little disappointed this thread has turned into 1 great Maxwell debate. I'm sure there were other players to discuss.

Maxwell: Hasn't been in good form but he's a better option then Goldsack. Goldy has done nothing at AFL that has been better then Maxwell has done. Goldsacks' form has been only solid but I like his energy. Maxwell is the general down there along with Heater.

Buckley: I'm a fan but I thought he was terribly fumbly as were some others. Perhaps a bit dewy/sweaty.

Leon: I can't believe how good a small defender he has become. I thought he would always provide great drive, poise, accuracy and decision making from the back but his one-on-one defending has really surprised me. He has that zip back.

Taz: Rock.

One bizarre moment from the game last night, I was at Metricon and was very dissappointed when the Pies supporters were booing Ablett from the first bounce? WHY??!! Not even the Cats supporters booed Ablett when we played them at Metricon earlier in the season. Very strange metality from some of your supporters. Surely you just appreciate a good player no matter who he plays for or where he has come from? Or maybe our culture at the Suns is a tad different to the Pies? ;)

Ignore the booing of Ablett, most of us wouldn't do it, and even most that did do it probably did in a with a little bit of tongue in cheek involved.

I thought Ablett's second half was amazing, and after seeing Judd close up last week against us, it's quite clear who the best midfielder in the competition is, and it's also the opinion I've had all year.

I thought the most promising sign for your mob was Harley Bennell late in the match, we all know the problems he has been having, but he showed why he was such a high draft pick last night, he is just all class.

I wish the Suns all the best, they seem to have built up a good culture around the club already, and are getting more competitive against the top sides as the season goes on.

See you in the finals in a few years.;):D

ive been going to the footy for 30+ years and booing players has always been around. apart from the obvious villian after a report, the boos are generally reserved for players who make a difference, who are genuinely good. ablett for example has been booed for years, rather than anything to do with his move to GC.

ablett snr was booed, brereton was booed, even that little **** KB was booed, as at the time he was the free kick king, murdered our small backs, but essentially made a difference.

Anyone know whats news on BJ's inury? Heard its significant....a shoulder or something?

It looked to be either a stinger or sublaxation of the shoulder, but considering the angle of his arm when it occurred a sublaxation is most likely. We've had players cop those two injuries this year and both played the following week, so he should be right to go against the Bombers :thumbsu:

With the sublaxation he just needs to be wary of his shoulder going at any awkward angles. As the capsule would now be a little stretched making him more prone to dislocation, but Ben Reid has managed with it all year so it shouldn't be to big of an issue for BJ.

I actually enjoyed watching Gold Coast last night.

Was good to see their young players have a crack, they're going to be a terrific team in a few years (thanks AFL).

I didn't mind the commentary either, I was quietly cheering for Gold Coast as well.

I look forward to our battles when their players have matured a bit more.

Anyone who thinks we didn't go into self-preservation mode in the 2nd half are delusional.

However, the guys who are fighting to keep their spots needed to step up.

Lachlan Keefe was outstanding.

I don't know if Goldsack has done enough so far, he needs to improve.

Maxwell was pretty ordinary, I know it's singing an old song.

Your right, he isn't as good he is better.

Goldsack disposal can hardly be any worse then Maxwell's, Goldsack is better at both those areas Maxwell is better reader of the play and directing our backline that is all.

On the type Maxwell has to play on (if he has anyone) Goldsack would easily do the job, not saying Goldsack is a star but he would fill the role and put pressure on for the spot which currently there is none.

You're forgetting ball handling - very important for a defender. Maxwell's is miles above Goldsack's, but then again so is everyone else in Collingwood's best 30.

Mercenary. Deserves to be derided by opposition fans at every opportunity :thumbsu:

And no doubt the culture at the Suns is different than ours. But that's hardly surprising considering you are an AFL funded business venture that stands for nothing and we are Collingwood. Your club was built of the back of disloyal players who were driven solely by the aim to acquire more money, that sort of mentality is always going to affect the culture of a club.

Happy to see youngsters Keefe and Fasolo have a strong game, good signs. Also good to see Wood step up, and to see Ball and Pendles working hard as usual. Gold Coast played well, clearly have some up and coming stars amongst their ranks.

We had to play interstate with half the team missing, and there's still so much negativity after a 9 goal win. Doesn't anyone think the lazy 2nd half performance could have been strategic, in order to not injure / wear out players? I'm sure MM is more concerned with having a strong team for the finals than flogging teams that won't make the top 8.

Besides, didn't GC beat Geelong for the first half of their game?

Besides, didn't GC beat Geelong for the first half of their game?
Yep, Geelong were behind at half time against the Suns, and I bet their board would have been full of negative posts also.

I noticed last night that several of our players really struggled with the humidity late in the game, Leigh Brown's face looked like a tomato towards the end.:p

The Good
Lachy Keeffe- fantastic. Was the main man to get us going. Marking was superb, kicking was super and looked very comfortable as a forward. Will be a wonderful versatile weapon with more development and games.

Alex Fasolo- this kid is a beauty. His marking is sensational. One grab everytime- even under extreme pressure. Decision making superb, kicking has great depth too. Has a bit of spunk about him too i.e. when he was giving it to Josh Toy for the 50m penalty.

Tyson Goldsack- thought he took a real positive step forward into some form last night. Was pretty cool under crisis and used the footy extremely well, even on his non preferred.

Luke Ball- career best footy and playing it with us. Hs improved just aout every facet of his game that people said he couldn't do. They said he couldn't spread, well he is spreading like hot jam; they said he had no pace to break away from packs- seems to have a new found spring in his step; they said he wasn't damaging- seems to be hitting the scoreboard directly or indirectly frequently; they said he couldn't kick over a jam tin- depth in kicking looks comfortable and good to me; was no good overhead- marking is one touch. What a player we have gained.

Jarryd Blair- very good all round game only thing he needs to work on is his conversion. He is a serial offeder at wasting chances, particularly ones that he should convert. Overall, he offers plenty and is in good form.

The Bad
Nick Maxwell- I'm a fan and defend his place in the side but is horribly out of sorts at the moment. Decision making with the footy poor, kicking poor, keeping his feet at the contest poor. Needs to just stick to the basics. Just focus on playing on a direct opponent and beat him. Don't worry about over-zoning at times, just play yourself back into form by keeping it simple.

The Brent Macaffer/J-Mac experiment in defence- not a fan of this. Hopefully this is the last time we see either of them in defence. Pretty disappointed that Caff didn't spend more time aross HFF. Will be better for the run though.

Overall fumbles- a host of players not as clean as normal. Too many fumbles, poor decision making and kicking too.

Some thoughts:

- J-Mac is a terrible footballer. In the mold of Jaxson Barham and Ben Davies, ripping VFL footballers but dont have the speed, decision making or skill for the top level. Delist at the end of the year.

- Buckley fumbles ...... alot! Keep an eye out for this because it's somethign small I have noticed that ruins the rhythm and flow of our attacking runs from defense.

- Surprised nobody has mentioned Leigh Brown's game. Thought he played his best game of the year and won quite a few taps to advantage when he went into the ruck. Serviceable around the ground also.

- Luke Ball is our most important player.

- Pendlebury was fantastic, Swan really good and Cloke was again the standout forward on the ground.

Keefe in our Top 10 in the game IMO. Fasolo is going to be a gun. Agree about Maxwell, if he wasnt captain he would struggle to be in the team. Pretty rough on Macaffer, first game in AFL since Round 3? Bally was the best, Pendles was a tad quiet (compared to other weeks) as was Swanny, who IMO's kicking was average

Luke Ball has been in incredibly good contested marking form of late.

13 goals from 16 games ontop of his grunt clearance work and quality possessions. 13.2 to be exact.

We have 12 players with double digit goal tallies. Nice spread.

28 of the 31 players we have used this year have kicked a goal. Only Maxwell, Rounds & Tooooooooooooooooovves haven't goaled.

Settle done mate, Maxy has been directly responsible for conceding at least 2 goals for the last 3 weeks. His form has been laughable all year and most of the last.
Just cause we don't have anyone to replace him with doesn't mean he's been in good formand shouldn't be subjected to critiucism.
I'll tell you something quietly, people are laughing at him being our Captain and I agree with them.

And then we do get a DNine-esque brain fart!

Hoepfully you made this comment hastily?

Lol, so did the Caffs face....:D

Girlfriend said she saw Paul "Fatty" Vautin in black n white at the game, anyone know a story behind this? Know he lives on the coast, just think it's funny the host of the NRL footy show going to AFL games.

Votes:
5. Ball
4. Keeffe
3. L.Brown
2. Johnson
1. Pendlebury

Notes:
Didn't have clear standouts but as a team we were fine.

Macaffer + Goldsack need more games. Both need to string a couple more senior games together if we want them ready for finals footy.

Cloke + Reid didn't stand out to me. Maybe the conditions didn't suit.
Cloke clearly beaten by Bock 1v1 for most of the night and didn't have a great impact. Stats were flattering.
Reid was ok, but just about every other game this year had him amongst our best 2-3 so was expecting him to be up there again.

Swan was solid but execution by foot sometimes not quite as good as I'd like it to be.

Davis had a nice stats card, but leeked a couple of goals so I couldn't have him amongst our bests.

Sidebottom was good for much of the match.

Keeffe was very promising and in the first 10 minutes of the game was clearly the best player on the ground. Very lively and clearly wanted to put on a show for his family and friends. I credit this game to his preperation and the study he is putting into learning his new role. But playing on Rory Thompson for most of the night helped.

L.Brown was very good. Tackling was hard as always. Was a presence around the ground and had allot of scoring involvements and scoring assists. Very happy with his game and I hope he continues to produce the way he did.

Wood was ok in the ruck for the only time this year. Playing against Fraser certainly helped.

Pendlebury was ok. Didn't stand out.

Thomas in the 1st half was solid. Obviously went off. Think he will be ok.

Ball was fantastic as always and clearly our best. Probably our in form player over the past month. Foot skills and overhead marking ability much improved. His set shot goal kicking is a pleasure to watch.

Fasolo showed some good signs. Tackled and marked very well. Finishing on goal not as good as usual, but we know he can kick them and should be in the mix come finals. Can play and the club will be very happy with his progress.

Johnson was good. Good finishing on goal and his footskills were good.
