But Hardeman can’t kick it either. Turns it over as often as Daniel. Flawed kicking style which simply doesn’t stand up when he needs to find a target under pressure. There’s honestly about 8 players on the list with the same problem. Which is why we concede more goals from turnovers in defence than anyone.
He (Hardeman) can kick it long reliably and longer than most which is a weapon but yep, his short kicking technique looks iffy.

We need a genuine kicking coach at the club - one who has the movement expertise to work with the different techniques and get them better.

Agree, definitely need to improve skills.

The Will Dawson play - immediate, long kick to a 2 v 2 or 3 v 3 in the corridor was a roll of the dice, high risk-reward but at least didn't require a finesse kick. Just someone who could kick it 55-60 metres and move it straight away. And the way we played in the last quarter against Freo - handball chains and overlap run from half back - also the way Collingwood carved us up in the second half - wouldn't require the finesse kick we're incapable of.

The problem with Daniel having so much of it is he either turns it over or runs around in circles for 5 seconds and then barely kicks it 40 metres to congestion.
Daniel kicks it slow sideways. Lmac often calls. Its a huge reason why we are the slowest ball movers in comp. And he is more conservative than 15 weeks ago. So slower.

Later in the game Zurhaar - unusually rebounding back in D-50 - also moved the ball fast through the corridor and we kicked a goal.

I've criticised Zurhaar alot this season but since the bye, maybe even a couple of games before that, he has really improved his game and is regularly all the way back in the oppo half or F50 working hard defensively. Its no coincidence we've looked a better side for most of that time. It helps when players, even honkys like him, pull their weight defensively.

We have to start moving the ball immediately and more directly from back there, a lot more often.

Yep. 100%

Also just the bolded bit. WE are so stagnent.

For the all the shit Daniel cops if we moved and provided him short options we'd enable that fast ball movement so much more effectively and he'd look a much better player. He's like the wrong gear cog in a machine .. or maybe the right one and the ones around him need replacing.

(By "replacing" I mean learning to lead into small spaces top provide an option. I don't mean replace them with players who do that ... altho its an option.)

Why does dinkers Daniel take 20 years to kick the ball when he’s doing kickoits while every other player/team moves the ball on quickly so the opposition don’t have time to set up?
Because no one moves.

We should have a swag of genuine A graders from all our early picks. We have some but have zigged when we should have zagged too often.
Our early (ie first round) picks are:

2020: Phillips at 3 and Powell at 13. Phillips looks like a bust Powell looks okay for pick 13.
2021: -
2022: Sheezel (3) and Wardlaw (4).
2023: McKercher (2) and Duursma (4) then Goad, Hardeman and Wil Dawson.
2024: FOS (2).

So apart from 2020 the rest haven't yet played three years and you've written them off already.

I was at the game last night. The umpires were criminal. Was just a tad furious for ruining an otherwise great game. Good experience otherwise, flew down from QLD, got to hold the banner, got a photo with Tess Craven and sat with the cheer squad. Good atmosphere with other passionate North fans.

The fight we showed in the first half was great. At half time I thought there's still a long way to go but we're with a chance here and we're showing some fight. Thats all you can ask of a young team with so many outs.

What the hell are you expecting, bro.

Smallest Melb club
Against second? smallest Melb club
Weekday night
Winter

We act like we're a big club on here. We're not. We kinda were in the 90s. Those days are now kinda over. I don't get the hand-wringing over crowd numbers. Ever. I was expecting about 21k, and at times it easily sounded like there were 10k more than there actually were. Take what we can get, throw some shit at the club's business personnel, and let's all move on

They said they planned for 23k so it exceeded expectations.

We get this when we are this bad, we can get big again when we get good, and we get better time slots and opponents at bigger grounds. Honestly I’m glad and grateful to a lot of people honoured last night that we don’t have to stress about this constantly any more.

The scoreboard doesn’t look great but there’s just so many positives to take away. Genuinely believe we just need a few more games into the younger lads and about 3/4 changes in the squad then we’ll easily be a top 8 side. We’re so close even though it feels so far (which this game has shown). We will get there! Up the Kangas!!

If we continue to play slow, contest based football with no ability to punish turnover, or defend it, there will be no discernible improvement relative to the better sides.

To be honest I think it's just little moments that always add up into something more. Last night, it was Jy's missed tackles. It was the inability to at least keep the ball locked in when the opposition won it in the middle. The amount of pinpoint handballs/throws the Braves nailed to get themselves out of congestion to spark a forward foray was ****ing infuriating. It was the inability of most players to identify that someone should be trying to crumb the contest (and that one's been ongoing). The defence held up by and large. Worst 4 goal game you'll ever see from Darcy.

It feels like we mentally lapse for chunks of games. Moments where players don't go as hard as they could've, and suddenly the margin's four goals and we feel like we're trying to resist a tidal wave. ****n Collingwood don't switch off the way we do, and I'm not sure they ever have.

If we switch on for a full game, I think we can do quite well with a game-style that's distinct from the turnover-dependent trends of this era and less chaotic, but we never, ever ****ing do. Ever.

It is the sort of thing that makes you question whether we get out of this. Dunno bout everyone else but the lid of creeping, pervasive shitness is firmly on, even if we're currently on track to beat 2021's results. I believe we have the physical capability already, but the mental capability side has some serious question marks
