Autopsy Autopsy vs *

We are never going to pass them or anyone unless we learn how to run and carry, it is a struggle for us to hit 3+ targets consecutively and there is too much butchering of the ball.

It just looked painful all night, our attempts to move the ball out of defensive 50, move the ball from centre clearance into the forward 50. If Larkey goes out on a strong lead the ball isn't going to anywhere within 5m of where it should be, it is a bit like being a professional darts player and being unable to hit the board.
They have kept their crabs way too long. We cut deep and will come through with a talented group. While Heppell, Stewart, ham, guelfi, snelling, Kelly play they are miles off it.

He took Dangerfields to the cleaners two seasons ago. He's at his best going for the ball.

I think I need to update the Bonars bio.

Bill Berry once took Paul Salmon to the cleaners.

Everything we do forward of centre is painful. We have a non existent system which leads to our goals only being generated by luck or moments of individual brilliance.

Illogical targeting of Larkey in the matchday thread considering the bloke is having to deal with being asked to be both our FF and CHF.

Ziebell is a -1 when on the field. Opposition pays him zero respect both offensively and defensively.

Colman-jones at 68% Gametime is playing a weird blend as a second ruck or bench. I'd love to see how many minutes he is playing as the second key forward.. I really like what he offers and we have been a much better side with him vs Xerri but just seems disjointed

If Jack Mahony played we would’ve won

Inability of the forwards to create a contest.

Inability to defend full ground transition.

Bingo.
I think the delivery into the forward line is the big and perennial problem. We win centre clearances consistently yet finish the match with six or seven goals. How is that? It’s the guys streaming forward with the ball who constantly miss targets. Yes, the forwards don’t seem to be able to get separation (in the way that Wright and Stringer were today) but we so miss those days when Wells and Harvey would almost always find a teammate inside 50.

It does plenty. Means we don’t have to watch an inanimate object.

We have a caretaker coach who is a former team mate of his.

If we never dropped him early in the year we won’t be now.

It like most things this year will just need to be endured.

As i have often heard Kingy spruiking, it's the next posession after a clearance that is key, as today's 42 to 22, ( centre square 20 to 6) tally clearly illustrates.

Hopefully our next coach and his assistants can address this and turn our clearance dominance into the lethal weapon it should be with the 6-6-6 rule in play.

You have to say that today was a much better performance than we've seen in other weeks. Dominated clearances and broke even on inside 50s. By and large, we got it out of defence ok.

We need to take a serious look at our forward line personnel and "craft". IMO. today's as clear as sign as we've had that the forward line is "the problem" rather than play up the field.

Covid didn't help going into the game.

Our midfield and defense was pretty solid, but we looked terrible going forward, we just couldn't hit a target in our forward 50 and Spicer and Ziebell were handicaps that we couldn't overcome.

I don't know how it looked at the stadium, but from the loungeroom armchair our forward 50 looked a little stagnate and this allowed the Bombers to double team, block our forwards run and intercept a large number of our kicks. It didn't help that we bombed the ball indiscriminately. This is definitely where the most work needs to done during the offseason with our new coach.

6 changes from the team last week. Not sure how many times in the last 20 years a team has won after having 6 changes, but it wouldn't be many. Anyway...

Positives:
Stoppage work was very good. Goldy, Greenwood, Simpkin and LDU absolutely pulled Essendon's pants down in the contest, but we just weren't clean enough thereafter.

Simpkin: Was very good. He's turned it around in the last month or two and I'm thrilled for him
JHF: Played his best game since the Sydney game
Bailey Scott: Would be up there with LDU in the B&F
Zurhaar: Just a star
Stevo: Ball use and run off the back flank was excellent
Kallan Dawson: I was as vocal as anyone regarding his recruitment, but I thought he showed enough in his first game. Hopefully builds his confidence for the remainder of the season and can be a mainstay next year
Turner: Thought he was very good - cant remember the last time he played as well as he did today

Negatives:
I think our loss comes down to 3 things. Firstly, our forward line's inability to get the ball to ground - the amount of intercept marks guys like Redman, Laverde, Kelly and Zerk-Thatcher were allowed to take in contested situations was ridiculous. Secondly, our forward line's inability to apply pressure when the ball hit the deck - we have guys inside 50 who offer absolutely nothing in this regard and even one of those kills you at this level. Thirdly, our delivery inside forward 50m was poor. Two guys stood out for me with having particularly poor games:

Ziebell: He's done. Way too slow to get separation on the lead and due to being slow, he offers very little when the ball hits the ground.
Spicer: Needs to go back to VFL level and develop some confidence in winning the footy, sticking tackles and applying effective defensive pressure.

Takeaways/thoughts as a result of the above:
  • I wonder if our club has the balls to drop Ziebell for Ford - it's the most obvious change you could possibly make but I'm not sure it'll happen.
  • Our strength in the contest leads me to believe we should place Sheezel at the top of our draft short-list over Wardlaw.
  • We need to prioritise getting in another pressure small forward - we really missed Curtis
  • We also really missed Tarryn's ball use and class through the midfield and going inside 50m

My concern is Simpkin's ball use at stoppages, it isn't as clean as someone like Cunnington, he doesn't have the strength to hold off opponents or break tackles and then launch with an aggressive handball so a lot of his disposal is rushed/not quality and it puts more pressure on the next guy receiving the ball. If Giantroo does a montage of our centre clearances, despite dominating, it is just haphazard, nobody has any confidence to spread aggressively because turnovers are imminent. That lack of confidence becomes cumulative and we usually end up with a horrible quarter and everyone drops their head.

If we ever put a team together that can contend, I am not sure it can have Simpkin in the middle and it definitely wont have Greenwood or Anderson. They put a hard tag on LDU and welcomed anyone else in the guts to kick it to their half backs who butchered us on the rebound.

If we take our north hats off for a bit and you look at the talent on our list and say okay, I want to manufacture a midfield that is going to beat teams like Melbourne, Dogs, Cats, etc with the midfields they have, how would we structure our midfield and what of the available draft talent do we need to execute it. At the moment we don't have a good ruck replacement for Goldy, CCJ got annihilated by Draper, we don't have a replacement for Cunners.

I'm worried about the structure we have and what it is going to look like going forward. We don't have the footskills for a coach like Clarkson, we don't have the size for a defensive coach like Lyon/Pike. We have some great midfield talent but it just seems like jigsaw puzzle pieces from random puzzles that don't fit together well.

It is going to be interesting to see how we handle it because if we don't put together a functional midfield it is going to be a much longer stay near the bottom than any of us want or hope.
