Do you also fail to see why it was the AFL's responsibility to give Melbourne a 2.7 million dollar bailout package so that they could pay Paul Roos 1.5 mil a year?

Anyone scoffing at the suggestion that Brisbane need assistance better hope that it's there for their own club if and when the time comes.

I think everyone is fine with Brisbane getting cash to bolster their admin and footy dept l8je Melbourne, its just that they don't deserve extra Salary Cap space or a Priority Pick.

The go home 5 didn't leave for money, the club has had a toxic culture up there for years.

Brisbane need AFL assistance so that they can have a complete clean out.

AFL money required to pay out the following:

Senior Coach
Assistant Coaches
CEO
Recruiting Staff

Some AFL money also required for a new training facility.

They need to get rid of the non performers at the top and bring in the very best that you can buy.

Melbourne did this
(With AFL money 3 years ago)

Fix the base first - The rest will follow.

Comming from a club that has recieved PP and benifited directly from players leaving clubs to go home you my good sir have no footing to judge. The lions have had none of the benifits to which your said club has directly benifited from.

And how many of the go home 5 are any good anyways?
They even got overs for Aish it would appear.

They do need help. Give them a 1st round priority pick, even if it just to screw Essendon over

Jared Polec
"I am at home in Port Adelaide. I grew up barracking for the Power, its such a great club and its a dream now to play for them. I probably wasn't as professional as I should have been and the injuries didn't help....."
- Jared Polec March 13th 2014.

Shaun Hart, the former Brisbane player and now Port Adelaide's director of coaching how big a role "being home" had played in the dashing midfielder becoming one of the recruits of the year, Hart said "enormous".

"He's back in a place where he feels like he's home and he's comfortable. And I think that's important for Jared, probably as much any other AFL footballer I've seen. He has worked really well once he got back to the environment that he grew up in."

Elliott Yeo - specifically requested a trade to his home state and was happy to play for either Fremantle or West Coast. His manager Colin Young said at the time that the reason for Yeo's decision to go home was not because of the Lions coaching situation, but because of Yeo's wanting to be back closer to family and friends.

Sam Docherty - chose Carlton because it was a strong club that had just played finals, because Mick Malthouse was coach and because he thought the team could achieve big things and he had grown up barracking for the club, just like his late father.

"I missed being able to go down the road to visit my aunty or having dinner with family or mates and just seeing a familiar face,"

'We're all leaving for one reason'. In the media it got hyped up that everyone wanted to leave because of 'Vossy', but that wasn't anyone's reason I don't think."

Billy Longer - went home to Victoria

"It's just that I thought St Kilda was the best place for me to develop my football. I saw the direction that this club was heading and also an opening, with Ben McEvoy leaving, for me to play some [senior] football. Added to the coming-home factor it just seemed like a great opportunity that I didn't want to miss.''

Patrick Karnezis - wanted to return home to be closer to family.

"Karnezis happily concedes he found the wrench of living away from family and friends difficult. "Just leaving home [at 18], being a Melbourne boy and coming from a very close family was tough,'' he said."

Well so what ? Having a COLA wouldn't stop those players going home, Adelaide also lost several quality players in recent years, you got your Academies now to get more home grown talent, i worry about the culture of your footy club always asking for handouts every year. The Doggies and Saints rebuilt their lists without handouts, replace the Muppets running your footy club and things will turn around eventually, you can't expect the AFL to bail you out everytime The Lions have a barren period.

Brisbane definitely should be given a priority pick, which should come in the first round after the non finalists.

I dont really think so. 13 years is not that long ago. What are "football years"? A year is a year. Ask St kilda when their last one was.. 50 years or something. We cant start crying foul cause we havnt won one in ten years.
Why would you cry foul when you're one of the richest clubs in the league?

Leppa is right

How the afl handed two teams in GWS and GCS unlimited talent while leaving other clubs to rot like dead carcasses on a country road was irresponsible

Gill has everyone hoodwinked with his casual style and laughs at stupid comments ....underneath you've got a heartless person who doesn't care who suffers in the name of expansion

Expanding at this time was a very poor decision ....we did not need two more teams

Well so what ?

Your statement about the "toxic culture" at Brisbane being the reason the GH5 left is BS.

Having a COLA wouldn't stop those players going home,

In Yeo's case, it might have.

Adelaide also lost several quality players in recent years,

In the past five years Adelaide have lost Gunston (for draft picks No. 24, 46 and 64), Maric (Pick 37), Tippett (for nothing), Vince (Pick 23) and Dangerfield (Picks 9 and 28). They gained Eddie Betts (Carlton), Tom Lynch (St Kilda) and Josh Jenkins (Essendon),

you got your Academies now to get more home grown talent, i worry about the culture of your footy club always asking for handouts every year.

When your home grown talent is constantly between 10-20% of the list, you can see why the Academies exist and why the go-home factor exists.

The Doggies and Saints rebuilt their lists without handouts,

The Lions haven't received handouts, so I'm not sure what you are talking about. If you're talking financial funding the Saints received $6 million from the AFL and AFL Victoria last year to return to Moorabbin. St Kilda also received an additional $3.8 million from the AFL in 2014 after recording a $3.91 million loss from $30 million in 2014. The Western Bulldogs received $2.8 million in AFL future fund distributions the same year. Melbourne got an extra $2.27 million from the same source, helping it to a $284,000 operating profit.

replace the Muppets running your footy club and things will turn around eventually, you can't expect the AFL to bail you out everytime

Do you understand that the current board has only been in charge since the start of 2014? Already player retention has improved (stand by for a couple more re-signing announcements) and also the annual financial losses have been reduced.

Leppa is a probably a good bloke - but lets face it, he is clearly out of his depth

He has no plan

Criticising city hall isn't going to get Brisbane anywhere

That's nice

They had several years to get the most out of the bandwagon supporters after the three peat era and invest heavily into the football department .

They are just incompetence , and for the record I argued the same about the AFL assisting MFC.

Leppitsch THE TRIPLE PREMIERSHIP PLAYER with the Lions says,
"Particularly guys like 'Rocky' (Tom Rockliff) and Dayne Zorko, they've been at this club a long time and we haven't given them a lot of success. They've got to hold up a lot. They've got to play with a lot of young kids and it must be draining."

So does Leppitsch feel for Andrew Walker - who played most of his career in losing teams? or is that different because Carlton isn't an "expansion club"...one rule for "expansion clubs" and another for established clubs I am guessing.

They just won 3 premierships with the partial assistance of the AFL not so long ago and yet because they start losing a few games they want more assistance. It is crazy. If the AFL give assistance to Brisbane, they should also give the exact amount of assistance to Carlton, Richmond, Melbourne, and all the other clubs that have spent most of the last 10-15 years out of the finals....oh that is right. I forgot. One type of assistance is more important.

Carlton have won just six games this year so far...Whoopee! that is something to celebrate according to the media. So much development they tell us.

Brisbane nearly beat Carlton in the first round, so with their full list they should surely be competitive against other no-hopers teams such as Carlton. Injuries are a factor. Lepptisch said it himself.

I watched the presser and agree with him, frankly the afl has behaved like drunken sailors over the last 5 years

Why did we need two new teams that play in front of 8000 people each week (yes the afl lies about how many people attended GWS and GCS games ...have a look at the bare seats vs people at those games ...the afl is putting an extra 4000 on each attendance figure) ......each week I look at the figures and then you watch the tv and you think nah mate c'mon there's no way there was 12,000 at the game ......we are no stupid GILL

I also like the fact he hasn't criticised those around him...is he a good coach ....most afl coaches know the game well ....worsfold knows his footy yet Essendon are struggling not because of his coaching ability

They had Voss and now Leppa .....that's 6 premierships of knowledge behind them, I think they know enough

The AFL expanding right now like it did was like a family with no money deciding to go an overseas holiday on the credit card and maxing it out ...it was irresponsible

The competition itself was in no position to be spending up like millionaires when the beggars on the streets needed food in their mouths.

How do you know he has no plan...throwaway comment that is baseless without fact

The irony of this statement below is beyond profound...

Leppitsch also criticised the AFL for playing a role in the club's predicament, saying the League had favoured the expansion clubs ahead of the Lions.

"We've been given nothing as a footy club," he said.

They? What are you talking about? They had their success over ten years ago. Administrators come and go, presidents, CEOs, board members. So the current regime has to suffer because their predecessors didn't put money in the piggy bank?

Clubs shouldn't have to suffer for eternity because they don't have the finances to dig themselves out of a hole, especially when the AFL are throwing millions and millions at two start up franchises.

I think it's a blight on the whole system that it's so difficult for most of the clubs to survive purely by playing football.

What is your solution, by the way?

Clubs do not succeed without the required resources. Fact!

He's right

The league gave the two expansion clubs money to build state of the art facilities

Brisbane has the worst

Yeah, the AFL shouldn't have helped Carlton in 2006 either because no one else got the same assistance at the same time. I mean it's not like Carlton did anything in the previous years before that to bring it upon themselves.

"Yet in 2006, Carlton was obliged to seek financial assistance from the AFL to enable the club to trade legally for the rest of the season.

Irony ? Walker, Murphy and Kreuzer ?
