At this stage who would you imagine would be more desirable on a team list?

Approximately the same age.

Brown:

(Trying not to bias the results. They are understatements.)

Pavlich because he at least plays over half a season.

Now the thread is up I'll give my own opinion. I think it's very interesting.

Brown for mine.

Brown was an integral part of the lions 3 premiership years. I know he's not been up to it this year. However, if the lions were a premiership contender he'd be a fair chance to make the team. The only question is if it is a case of his career having ended at this point in time. Carey was injured much of his career. Yet he could still show us his very best late into his career and then in the end, at Adelaide and late with North Melbourne, with less zest and less consistency. He still got a fair way to the end of a standard AFL career.

It'll be interesting to see how much of a finals performer Pavlich is,especially with Fremantle now pushing top 4; can Pavlich handle the big stage?

His contributions have been slightly overated. You look at those respective seasons, and his finals games, it was the Brisbane midfield and Lynch rather than him doing most of the damage. He chipped in of course, but it's not like he carried them to those flags.

However my choice is Brown, because he's potentially a better player.

Stats wise it is similar, but in terms of influence, leadership and achievements Brown wins (albeit coming from a lions supporter), but Pavlich is certainly very close behind.... both players are 1/100 and dont come round often at all.

Im actually giong for Pavlich simply because you get 22 games out of him a season. Brown is far too injury prone, and when he is not injured, he is suspended. Id be surprised if Brown plays more than 200 games. He be lucky to reach 175 IMO.

When Brown is on song, he is the most damaging player in the competition.

Pav has been consistantly good for 5 years though, and already has been AA 4 times despite only being 24 years old. Brown has never been an AA.

I'd prefer Pavlich on my list because of he is always on the park (touch wood), his tremendous skill and leadership qualities... but if you were gonna pick one to play in the grand final, probably Brown because he is proven on the big stage.

Pav has also played a season in defence and a season in the midfield, so stats are a bit hard to compare.

Brown because on his day he is unstopable much like Ablett, Carey and Lockett all were (on their day). I'm not saying Brown is as good as those three (yet) but he can single handedly change the result of a match. However Brown needs consistancy in getting on the park.

I agree, good post.

A Brown game is better than a Pav game.
Pav is ultra consistent (holds the club record for stringing the most games together) and Brown has only been able to get to 3/4's of a season. I'd say those 3/4's of a season are more valuable than Pav's full season.

He may have injury concerns, but Bronw's the more dominant footballer.

Still think Pav will make an excellent contribution at Adelaide when he returns to SA.

Pavlich. By a long way. Why? - consistency, durability, adaptability, Can play anywhere. Is always on the park. Almost always in best players.

I have seen Brown in some devastating form and have seen him win games off his own boot. I have also seen him get beaten as well. I can't think of a standout game he's ever had against Port. Don't forget he has played in much better sides than Pavlich has also. Some sides/ opponents have gone to water when playing him based on reputation as well.

Brown is an awesome player, could be the new Carey, but unfortunately consistencey precludes him from being so. Therefore, I would much prefer Pavlich in my team.

Consistency is the reason pav is better.

and to say Browns best is better then Pav's is disturbing, Pav has had more Disposals, more Marks and more goals in any one game.

Pavs best is the best

Could people please get over the fact that Brown is 'a powerhouse' and is 'similar to Carey' and all this nonsense. Pavlich is a supreme footballer in every way. Period.

In all my time following football (which isn't long in the scheme of things, roughly 20 years) Jonathan Brown is the only player I can remember whose reputation grows more and more despite the fact he plays less and less every year.

And we're not talking about merely a token reputation for having potential 'if only he could stay fit' or for being a decent player, or even a good player, but we're talking a widely-perceived reputation for being the hands down best player/forward in the country.

It boggles the mind.

Browns best is better. But Pav plays every week and is a top 10 player in the league.
If i could have one of either Hall, Big Nick, Pav or Brown magically cross to the Bombers. Brown would be my 4th pick.
However, if they were all 100% fit and i could have one of them for a day. I'd choose Brown!

People rate him on what "he might do" rather than "what he has done".

He hasn't dominated a season yet, he hasn't won an AA yet, no B&Fs, no individual accolades... until he can actually string a season together and dominate a year or three, he doesn't deserve to be compared to Carey.

Hell, even Fev is gonna be ahead of him in that department. In that he has dominated a year and won an AA as a result. If Brown is really as good as people say, if he's really a superstar, why couldn't he do the same? Yes, he should've done it this year but thanks to suspension/injury he couldn't. But when he wasn't, he was inconsistent until this year.
