Brownlow votes must be taken out of the hands of the umpires.

Give it to the coaches - oh wait. They already vote. Midfielders win that.

Give it to the players - oh wait. They already vote. Midfielders mostly win that.

Give it to the media - oh wait. They already vote lots. Midfielders win most media awards.

Give it to 'experts' - oh wait. They already vote. These people belong to the media.

Give it to the fans - oh wait. Do you want a player such as Jake King winning it because a lot of fans gang up and rig it for him? Could easily happen. I can imagine Bigfooty organising it.

Leave it as it is. If a backmen ever wins MVP/Coaches Award/Brownlow/Norm Smith/Herald Sun POTY/other media POTY then they have had an awesome season.

Oh and Merrett - 6 votes! Legend!

After the last two years in particular, the Brownlow is losing its credibility, take the voting off the umpires, but the AFL will not make that decision. Swan and Judd should swap years.

It has become farcical with the umpires clearly correcting their failings from the previous year. Ablett should have won in 2008, but the umpires missed that, only to correct themselves in 2009. Ditto 2010 with Swan.

Is there a solution? I don't know, but maybe we should drop "fairest", or have the players, coaches AND umpires cast the votes after each game to determine the 3,2,1.

Steve Johnson v Melbourne:
34 disposals, 7.1, 9 marks, 4 tackles and 27 score involvements, 199 CD ranking points.

Just the 2 votes.

I'm also not quite sure how Geelong got 1 less votes than Carlton despite winning 5 more games, 13 less than Hawthorn with one more win (and vastly superior percentage) & 2 less than West Coast despite winning 2 more games.

Callan Ward getting 1 vote in round 24 against Fremantle may well be the biggest WTF since Diesel Williams got no votes for a 44 possession game.

Cal clearly had his mind elsewhere and played possibly the worst game of his career. Both Dreamteam and Supercoach had him ranked around 20th, and as far as I can find, not one media outlet or online voting site had him listed in the top 10 players on the ground.

Surely he didn't get a vote because a handful of fans chose to give him a Bronx cheer in the 1st quarter.

That bloody Geoffrey Edelsten at the Brownlow again..... Who invites him and why? WTF

Everything in this thread is about who was best on ground or who wasn't in particular games, but the Brownlow is for "fairest and best", not "best". I have no idea how the umpires take that into account but to say someone was dudded when they were clearly BOG and didn't get 3 votes is missing half the story. Barry Hall as an example tended to give away a lot of frees and often remonstrated with the umpires if he didn't get one himself, so maybe the umps took that into account when working out the votes.

Thank you for mentioning what I thought was also an obvious point.

I umpire sports and we also need to give a 3-2-1 for fairest and best. I certainly dont give it to the bloke who mouths of at not only me but opposition players during a game, regardless of how well they played.

The AFL Im sure are bigger then simply local league basketball but the principles remain the same.

If you have a 40 possession game and kick 3 goals but constantly mouth off or had a 50m penalty against you that could be the difference between votes and no votes.

Not backing umpires here but just saying theres more to it then what we as supporters see or what scores we get on our dream team.

I went to that game and watched the whole thing. To be honest I was pretty surprised with all the man love for Johnson after that game, I think a couple of errors stuck out in my mind and while that snap goal towards the end was widely lauded, I just felt it highlighted his lack of confidence with a drop punt. Maybe the umpires saw something similar.

The worst part of the brownlow was they kept calling the pies votes last in which was an indictation that the winner came from collingwood. Why do they do that every year. Last year they called Carlton's votes last and Juddy won.

Absolutely agree with this. Don't know why they bother. Just read the games in order they were played. Was an absolute giveaway that Swan was going to win.

Only real incentive to keep watching was to see if Mitchell lead the vote count or if Dal Santo could maybe pinch or tie it.

Also found it bemusing that with 2 rounds left to read, Swan was 6 ahead of Dal Santo, and yet no mention that he was going to win a Brownlow. He looked like he was still nervous and then ad break.

Can they not do math?

Hodge getting more votes this year than last year despite being not even close to the level he was last year

Yeah go figure.

Also cant get over I Omith getting a vote when he didnt even play a game.

Also worth noting that imo this was the absolute all time mid fielders medal.

Franklins 20 votes was the only non midfielder amongst the top 13 or 14, and he probably only got that many because of how much time he spends in the midfield.

My biggest WTF is M.Murphy not leading half way through the season. :S

Did not get the credit in some of the early games (other than the first 2 games) that he really deserved. In reality he probably should have finished with more votes than Judd, but the umpires have shown they are more inclined to lean towards Judd, Ablett, now Swan, if there is any doubt over who had the better game. No doubt Murphy (& Pendlebury) will benefit in this way in the years to come.

Yer that was astonishing

well theres an old cliche that you have to lose a Grand Final before you can win one.

More accurately, it looks like you have to lose a Brownlow medal count as a favourite before you can win one.

Beats me how Daniel Wells didnt get more votes, Jack Redden on 1 vote was a bit strange thought he would have polled a few more. Boyds game v the dockers as well
