Maybe we could tape one of those wheel type measuring devices to the umpires backside, and he could run along with the wheel giving him a distance measure readout? (or, better, stick the shaft up his you-know-what)

Seriously, we have to give the umpires as much technical help as we can. 'Score Review' has shown us clearly how often they get things wrong and, it has taken a while, but I think most supporters realise it is much better for the technology (won't stop them booing though when it goes against them, no matter how clear cut!)

I know we've been tongue in cheek here, but to be serious for a moment, it actually wouldn't be super difficult to invent some tech to give umpires a perfect way to measure 50m.

1) Put 3 calibrated sensors around the ground, at set positions.

2) Give the ump a sensor that allows them to push a button, triangulating their world position with the sensors.

3) They run out the fifty, and as soon as the sensor has moved to the edge of a 50m radius from the starting position, it lights up.

Somebody did a segment earlier in the season. I think it's time for part 2.
I was thinking that whoever the official is up in the box should have a sheet of paper with the field printed on, and ruler with the scaled 50m on it. He can then get the on field umps' ears about placement of the mark. If they can correct bad calls then surely they can aid in 50m placements.

Good idea. With all the tech available today, a 3D computer, does AI help that? Umps would crack it.
Makes me laugh though to think through the earpiece they'd be hearing, Cold, still cool. warm, warmer. hot, a bit hotter, STOP.

Harder to judge 15m on kicks.
I suggest that they change the kick rule to 20 m. This really gets rid of dinky kicks and easier for umps to judge but gives receivers time to adjust/react when an accurate or erroneous call is made.

The same issue will arise in judging what is 20m. They could cut the grass way then the other in horizontal strips 15m wide across the oval which will at least give the umpires (and players) a point of reference.

*And Blicavs at the goal line was called touched by the goal umpire with support from the boundary umpire, who came up and made a point of confirming that he'd seen it get touched. How often do you see that happen? Should give us every confidence that it was correct. And then slow-motion playback showed absolutely nothing to contradict the initial call. It was inconclusive, but it was trying to find evidence of a gap, and found none. That makes the initial call valid than the disputation not even worthy of a conversation to my mind. Disrespectful to the umpires in question for the commentators to go on about it like they did.

Agree, it looks like centimetres, so close on screen need a telescope, and with no deviation. I've rewound it even more than them, and reckon he touched with his thumb. Review doesn't have snicko, like cricket, so it is possible along with sight, one or two Umps can hear noise.

And now I visualise it, there would be a point of reference for 50m penalties as well, particularly those in or near the middle of the ground. Three and a bit strips equals 50m.

Not sure if it’s been mentioned but if they’re going to stir up controversy about umpiring, how is no one mentioning Mihiocek’s first mark and goal in the last that Blitz clearly had first hands to?!

To me the rundown tackle was clearly a trip and I felt that at the ground from the moment he dived.

The score review, if it was up to me there wouldn’t be score reviews at all, but I do feel that reviewing touches is ridiculous and they should do away with that because as for example the other Mihiocek mark doesn’t get the luxury of a review. Either way, I’ll trust the people on the line rather than idiots from 200m away.

20 m will make errors less problematic and push players to move ball a bit further.
15 rule seems not to have acted as enough of a deterrent

Absolutely. We've had this tech for decades already. The slowmo camera work in cricket is exemplary

I agree. Every player on the team needs to get at least 20 possessions for it to be considered a successful outing in my book. Obvioulsy the midfielders need a higher benchmark - they need 33 possessions a game.

I tend to agree.
Be good to have some accumulators in the team as we have been devoid of a few in succession for a while.

Mullin doesn't strike me as the type who could develop that side of his game. Maybe just a low possession but high impact type?

Neale's ball use was really poor and he was caught out of position at times.

But how you can think Mullin or Clark were anything less than very good is perplexing. Mullin limited Daicos' impact about as much as you can hope for and every involvement Clark had was positive.

Agree with you about Mullin: he did a great job quelling Daicos' impact. Anyone who can't see that can't have been watching the guy play this year - he is bloody damaging. If you let him get the ball and use it with time, he will absolutely kill you. He didn't do that last night thanks to Oisin and was clearly frustrated about it.

A little more effort to spell properly and be bit more concise in whom we refer to, and a little more patience and understanding when it's spelt wrong or unclear as to who is being referenced will go a long way.
