Autopsy Cats lose to Saints by 7 points - should have been more

After such a poor first half, it was always unlikely the Cats would win this game. The Saints came out, switched on, and fired up, and our guys played like they had just woken up from a nap. They seemed a bit stunned. How often have we seen this with the Cats getting smashed early in the game and then coming back and only losing by under ten points? Disappointing game after what they dished up last week. Jack Henry, Holmes, Atkins, Zuthrie, & Lawson did their best for us, but the rest of the team was very underwhelming.
I think this loss is on the coaching staff as much as anyone

CS said the saints were clean and we fumbled and missed chances but the hotdog stat of football … the pressure rating seems to indicate the saints were a little more up than us. My bet is thats a week to week thing..and sometimes the opponent will be more up than you.

Its close comp ..and on their day it does not take much for lower rated team to swing the pendulum. Losing Smith before and Stewart in game and up against it …. and a couple of umpire non calls on push in the backs which were astounding considering the noise about that issue a few weeks ago … to slip out to the wrong side of a 40 point difference.. to then fight it out was admirable. Most of the younger players had learning moments … and the loss might sting but the time where they were given the keys to drive the car .. so to speak... will help them all long term.

3 games in and COS is showing glimpse on why we passed on the enticing Caddy.

How many of those [emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji640]] goals were from within [emoji638][emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]]]m of goal? I'm guessing all of them.

Not sure, it felt like all of them didn’t it. On the flip side we had Stengle missing from [emoji639][emoji6[emoji640][emoji637]]m out and O.Henry kicking [emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]]].[emoji638] (usually one of our best set shots) and J.Clark [emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]]].[emoji638].

[emoji637][emoji6[emoji640][emoji637]] goals [emoji[emoji6[emoji640][emoji638]][emoji640][emoji640]] to [emoji637][emoji639] goals [emoji637][emoji639].

  • Stengle's miss in the 1st term
  • Neale's dropped mark in the 3rd.
  • O'Connor having a shot instead of passing in the 3rd.
  • Clohesy's miss at 3/4 time.
  • Danger's miss in the last term.
  • O'Sullivan lowering his eyes instead of bombing it from 60 in the last quarter.

Make any two of those and we win.
Non competitive first 2 quarters end of story.

Morning after.

Gee, it's never fun to lose, but at least it wasn't a pointless loss.
1) St Kilda at Marvel = hoodoo now.
2) The kids are alright.
3) The ruck shenanigans were at least partially mitigated by some of the most consistently poor centre bounces I've seen in the 'one man up' era (which I personally hate)
4) There are worse ways to lose than watching an opponent kick goals out of their asses, only to make a comeback and fall short.

I never said our football wasn't shabby, it would be trite to say the Umps were totally at fault.
So I would agree with you if there was no comeback. The proof in the pudding, no umpiring breaks for us in the last five.
Anyway negatives are fine- the positive is for our undermanned fight that seen STK throw away a huge lead.
They were more undermanned than we were…..

Are they giving us a premiership point from be last night? Very generous!

Difficult loss to swallow given St Kilda's recent record against us; they might be a bog-average AFL side but they match up well against us and fancy they can outwork us; the writing was on the wall all week that the two sides were liable to reverse their fortunes and so it proved.

Congratulations to them on a pretty resounding win.

Setting the bitter taste of defeat to one side I genuinely thought there were some exciting signs tonight.

Connor O'Sullivan's development might well indeed be just as accelerated as the club has suggested.
He showed a ton tonight.
Reminds me of the early days of Barry Stoneham; a tall-but-agile player shoehorned into the back line who nonetheless shows a lot of talent early on despite some physical vulnerabilities.

Mitch Knevitt's contribution in a big win last week was mildly encouraging imo; far more heartening to see him really dig deep against the tide tonight. Stats not that impressive but I liked his application; his intensity increased as the game went along.

Ted Clohesy is one that I've not been particularly high on but there is no arguing with his contribution once Tom Stewart went down this evening. Clohesy did not look out of place, could have kicked 3 but as it was chipped in with 2 much-needed goals and consistently put his noggin over the ball.

Jhye Clark looked spark-y at times. Still has plenty to work on but continues to show flashes of his pathway to success as an AFL player. Rushed the disposal at times again tonight by hand and foot.

But there's no getting past the fact that our midfield, with Smith out, looked pretty tepid, particularly with Max Holmes subdued for much of the 1st half (fought back strongly though).

Not sure where Jack Bowes is at; a combined 19 disposals as a midfielder in the past two weeks. I appreciate he does a lot of grunt work. But he isn't getting much of the ball.

Oisin Mullin is running out of admirers, offered very little tonight.

Dangerfield was required to put in a much longer shift than he did last week and he stepped up as needed; Pat not-unreasonably fought for a 2-rather-than-1 year extension on his contract in the off-season; if he wants to play on in 2026 then I think he'll still be needed at CBA right to the end.

Bad loss, Brisbane in Qld next week is it?
He only knows this way - and made some far more decorated players look silly .. might not be a fun but never goes less tha. Fill speed.. and we need that IMO with some of the more skilled show ponies we have at times

Go catters

Clohesy is a smart, tough, disciplined footballer with a good all round game. While forward of centre is not our main problem area, he might be a more solid citizen than some of our forwards who drift in and out of game.

I think a role across half forward looks his spot.

Put it down as a mulligan. We’ve lost 4 in a row to St Kilda at Marvel, sometimes teams just play a certain way against you that is hard to counter. Zach Jones is a brownlow medalist right? I mean coz he always looks like one against us!
And on top of that we weren’t clean all game, uncharacteristic things happened, lots of fumbling, Stengle missing a goal from directly in front, Lawson slipping in the middle of the field, Danger missing the set shot, Bowes couldn’t do anything right etc.
We struggle to be in games when Holmes, Miers and Dempsey don’t touch the ball and they couldn’t get near it in the first half & when they came into the game in the second half we stormed home.
Really good signs from Clark, some beautiful inside 50 kicks and work in close, showed some class and why he could (is going to be 🤞) be a really good player.
Connor O’Sullivan took some huge strides forward and Clohesy was very impressive.
Looked a million bucks last week and 10cents for 2 1/2 quarters this week and in the end really should’ve won but we blew our chances.
I’ll back us to beat Brisbane next week.
