I dont think we are in a positon to make a massive amount of changes.

Maric will definately come in as will Porps, the rest will come down to when other players are fit. There is no point dropping someone like douglas to play a rookie

Yep youd never drop a player like Dodd to play a rookie like Barlow would you.;)

Upgrade Jaensch of the Rookie lis . Had 29 touches with Sturt on the weekend and all his possessions are class. Is quick and a long accurate kick for goal which we need and is a natural run & carry ball carrier.

Also upgrade Henderson to play in the Otten role of Half Back and equally can move to the Half Forward. He impressed in his 2 preaseason games with Adelaide and with centrals the last two weeks has kicked 6 & 3 goals respectively.

Both these players are very classy and polished players & will make it at this level and will be better players than Sloane & Cook or Petrenko. Lets give them a go now

Griffin is not and will never be an AFL ruckman. His efforts last night were pathetic. One moment in particular, when he refused to tackle Sandilands and instead just stood there losing his balance. Incapable.

Hentschel confirmed my thoughts over the preseason, his days are numbered. We virtually played with a man down when he was playing forward. Had 0 impact on the match during that time. Played better when he was moved to defence, but personally i can't see it as a permanent move. We have a plethora of options to play as that third tall/"creative" backman - McKernan, Davis, Hendo, Young etc. Far better options IMO.

Armstrong was pretty terrible, looked far out of his depth and cracked consistently under pressure. 2 unforced OOF's and that mark, play on and insta-tackle during the first term (which was unlucky, but still showed poor awareness) are some examples. Had a good linking play out of defence where he was involved several times which was impressive. It was a tough game to make a debut, but from what i saw he still isn't ready.

It's clear we need to play 2 ruckman so Tippett can play 90% of the game at FF. McKernan is my man. Can also play at CHF if we need him (I believe he played as a defender against sturt though?) along with Walker to replace Hentschel.

So my changes:
OUT: Griffin, Hentschel, Armstrong, Cook
IN: Maric, McKernan, Porplyzia, Knights

Cook to play if Sloane is injured.
Burton to replace Dougie if he is available.

The obvious INs are Maric, Sellar and Porplyzia. Maybe Knights and Burton too - they're automatic selections, but my gut feeling is that they'll have a week in the SANFL first to get some match fitness. I can't see the selectors bringing 5 players into the side in one week - that's just too unsettling.

Therefore, with 3 INs we need 3 OUTs. Griffin (incompetent) & Sloane (injured) are the 2 obvious players. Next on the chopping block would be Armstrong (last in first out), Douglas (performed badly) and Hentschel (ditto). I actually like the idea of keeping Armstrong in the team, as I think he will learn a lot from the experience - he'll drop out the following week anyway when Knights & Burton return. Douglas DID have a good pre-season, so he probably has 1 or 2 more brownie points up his sleeve. That leaves Hentschel - a poor pre-season and a shocker against Freo should see him playing for WWT in the SANFL next week.

IN: Maric, Sellar, Porplyzia
OUT: Griffin, Sloane, Hentschel

I'm not the least bit averse to the idea of upgrading Henderson and/or Jaensch. However, the small/mid-sized vacancies will shortly be resolved (with the return of Knights & Burton), so it's probably not worth upgrading them for one game only.

I want big Jim back in the team.

I've had an unhealthy man crush on big Jimmy for some time now so perhaps this is just my bias creeping in and this is probably a REALLY bad time to post this considering it's the day after we've been mongled by the biggest goliath in the competition but hear me out.

With the tendency of clubs across the league to move towards the smaller type ruckman who can work around the ground as a midfielder I think this plays into Jim's hands. I know he was our great white hope as a key forward at one point but he's a natural in the ruck if a tad undersized and if he was 5 cms taller he'd be an elite of the game in the middle IMO. What you'll get from him every time is a ferocious contest, a willingness to chase hard, run and provide a link up option through the centre of the ground. He moves well and frankly his type of presence was what we sorely lacked yesterday against Goliathlands.

The more I think about it the more I want Maric and Sellar as our permanent ruck tandem. It may not be the most talented duo in the league nor on our list but one thing these two have shown time and time again is that they have ticker. I would much rather have two guys in there that are a known quantity and provide the same output every week but lack perhaps that superstar quality than persist with guys who POTENTIALLY could break a game wide open and might do it once every 10 weeks and then stink it up for the other 9.

So for mine:

In: Maric, Sellar, Porplyzia

Out: Griffin, Sloane (inj), Douglas

Douglas makes way for the Porpoise, Griffin to go for 2 guys that want to be at the AFC and enjoy the contest and Sloane a tad unlucky with injury but allows us to bring that second ruck option in. Also I don't want underdone Knights and Burton back, give them a game in the SNAFFLE each just to get a bit of run into their legs. We saw against Freo what too many underdone players can do.

I think Armstrong should stay in the side another week - unless we put Petrenko down back (hint hint). Armstrong did make some bad mistakes but he also did some pretty nice things.

Amstrong should absolutely stay, at least he tried to run the ball but didn't have enough confidence to bypass a few players so hand balled to them instead. Would loved to have seen him back himself in.
He has to be given time to find his feet.

We need some speed out of defense and he needs some freedom to provide some run.
The team defense looks unbalanced as we don't have that third defender that floats across the backlines earmarked yet ( Bassett, Ottens type).

I'm willing to give Davis a go as he plays in defense for North is a very strong mark and his first instinct is to dish off to runners coming out of defense.

I also agree that Petrenko would better serve us in defense while Stiffy is out.

Porps will be back and hopefully Knights then we will look a more potent outfit but just persist with the the young blokes they must get game time.

I am not sure Maric will come in as he is underdone. He will need some sort of run before he gets into the team.

Unless, we want to keep Tippett at FF and bring in Maric as a relief ruckman.

What I suspect will happen is a single change

Out: Sloane (inj)
In: Porplyzia

We have so many underdone player already in the 22 that we just cannot afford to bring in too many more.

We just can't hope to bring in underdone players and hope for a better showing. Once these players get some match fitness we might start looking OK but until then, we need to ride the bumps.

Sure its shithouse that we lost to Freo but a good number of our players need some match fitness before they reach acceptable standard.

Douglas and Griffin have match fitness and don't play to anywhere near an acceptable standard.

These two must be dropped, they've had more than enough chances over the years.

although maric may be a bit underdone, it should help our structure immensley...!! because even if he isnt winning the taps we know that he will be using his body and letting everyone know he is there..!

Drummond I know you love to hang shit on the players that you don't rate particulatly after they have average games BUT, there is no way in hell both will get dropped because it makes no sense.

Both struggled, but both are fit to play. Maric is underdone and if he does come into the side this week, its to SHARE the ruck duties with Griffin. Griffin won't be dropped for Maric this week. We already have more than enough of the underdone players in our team, bringing in another one to carry the ruck will not happen.

Douglas had a poor game but has been good in PS games and he won't be dropped after one crap game. He is a CERTAINTY to play this week. Craig won't drop players after one bad game and he sure as hell shouldn't either.

Another problem is that there are no fit players to come in for Douglas. Sloane is injured and is unlikely to play, so Porps will come in for him. Do you want to bring in Jacky for Douglas?! Give me a break! And don't start with this rookie promotion rubbish. For the time being, none of them are ahead of Douglas in the pecking order.

My suspected changes this week are:

IN: Porplyzia, Maric
OUT: Sloane (inj), Stevens (concussion)

Not sure if it will happen but
In : Maric, Porp, Knights, Sellsy

Out: Griff, Rowdy, Armstrong, Sloane (injured)

We badly need Knighta back in the squad. His kicking can see the ball kicked over 60m making us less predictable as he can clear the flood.

10 news said Sloaney's sidelined for a few weeks - another favourite injured :( seriously starting to think it's me! Time for me to favourite Dougie? :p

against two solid ruckmen in Seaby and Mumford, we'll need more than just Griffin, so hopefully they bring in:

IN: Maric, Sellar, Douglas
OUT: Griffin, Sloane (INJ), Porpz

...unless Sellar isn't ready to return yet. it's harsh to drop Douglas after a great pre-season and 1 poor game, but we need Porpz back, so it's like for like (small forward). i thought Knights was still another game away from returning? but i did hear that Burton said he should be available for selection next week...so it's just a matter of bringing him in or letting him have a run in the SANFL first. they can't drop Walker for him though...perhaps Hentschel might make way for when Burton returns (although, Burton cannot play loose man in defense, which is what Hentschel has spent most of his time doing). Armstrong wasn't that great on the weekend either, but you'd think he'd keep his spot until Johncock returns (and omg, we really need him back soon, because Armstrong is no Johncock).
