I think this is the role that JVB was groomed for, I mean Dale Morris is no great user of the footy but his man does not get the ball. Depending on the opposition if we know they have a deadly small-medium forward we need to have a specified defender shut that player down. De Boer could do it but he's valuable applying havoc around the ground.

Funnily enough Grover shut down Milne and McPharlin shut down Riewoldt but no one stopped Schneider earlier this year..

yes we are always one short. I think Freo need to make this a priority. JVB cannot seem to do it consistently. I don't know if he will improve but we are losing a lot of games while he is learning. Personally I think we need to look elsewhere. Pearce seems a little to slow and I really can't see him matching it with a player like Rioli.

Ibbotson? seemed to do a marvelous job of it last year. Although i do know that you guys would like him through the midfield more it seems. Hes fast, has a decent size to him and can play on most types.

Broughton has also shown he can do a similar role but i think you guys might be losing to many play makers if he is kept deep in defense.

Or maybe its time for Stephen Hill who is struggling a little bit this year, to play the role he use to as a junior. Small rebounding defender. I know he offers heaps up the ground when in form, but he isnt in form and doesnt produce often enough at the moment. I wouldve loved to see him go to Rioli when you played hawks in the goal square, he may be slim looking but hes strong.

Do agree about the OPs, small forwards always seem to have a day out against us for some reason. I've always though Pearce could be used as a lock down defender, but Harvey always seems to play him on the forward flank when he plays at AFL level.

Anyway here's my changes
In:
Sandilands
Palmer
Hayden
Silvagni
Bradley
Ballantyne (If fit)

Out:
Clarke
Van Berlo
Hinkley
Crichton
Pearce
Bucavaz

Those are some nice ins, Hayden and Silvagni despite have limited match practice since returning from Injury are still a massive improvement on the guys coming out of the side, I definitely think its worth the risk to throw them in the deep end.

Do you think Pearce is quick/good enough to do that role?

Trouble with Ibbotson is that while he probably could do that role, he doesn't want to do the role. He likes playing at half back where he can read the play and i believe trained as a midfielder during the off-season.
Might be a good learning experience for hill but wouldn't fix the problem long-term. chances are when our midfield improves and he has matured enough shake a tag he is going to be a very important part of our midfield.

Thats "5" risk players...WAY too many & as much as I like your INS, I highly doubt the match committee would go down that track...

IN:
Sandilands
Hayden
Bradley
Palmer
Mellington

OUT:
Grover - dont think he'll play
Griffin - would rather Zac/Sandi combo
Crichton
Hinkley
VanBerlo

Thats still 3 risks. Bucovaz deserves another game, you just can't debut someone as a sub & expect miracles....give the kid a chance for at least 2-3 games. I think Palmer will play midfield & if he doesn't....I would rather not play him at all. Pearce can be the sub.

RUCK: Sandilands/Barlow/Palmer
FF: Johnson/Bradley/de Boer
CHF: Mayne/Pav/Crowls
CEN: Fyfe/Broughton/Hill
CHB: Buco/Ibbo/Lower
FB: Duff/McPharlin/Hayden

Bench: Zac/Zu/Mellington
Sub: Pearce

Palmer to midfield
de Boer to forward pocket for defensive pressue we lack when Balla's not there
Pav to CHF to stretch Brisbane's defence with 3 talls
Broughton to midfield role
Buco to Half back flank
Ibbo can play CHB...has a good jump, I can't see why not, Mitch Clark injured so some crab will be playing there...hey Mark Harvey did it in his days!
Mellington to debut to inject some life amongst the pack!

Anyway we'll know in 20mins I guess

Yeh agree

I guess VB played that role the year before when you guys were so successful i think he might just be struggling a bit with form and is getting thrown around in all sorts of roles and no players can adjust to one specific role. I mean watching Lower he was a midfield tagger than went to half forward looked like an offensive tagger than went to the backline for green last week.

Maybe the problem is players are playing to many different roles and play a different role each week, they arn't getting the chance to improve on the previous weeks effort/performance.

Certainly something the team needs to address but maybe the man that hasnt played at all this season is a reason (Hayden). Broughton clearly took over his role early in the season and did a pretty good job, but he is a much better player than just a shut down deep back pocket and needs to be released.

Tell our coach that, unless they're a 206 cm wingman or some other obscure thing he doesn't seem to be happy. I think he has over-reacted to this sub rule and turned players in to bits and pieces players. it very frustrating being a supporter at moment, but I guess you get that feeling yourself, being an Adelaide supporter.

Any of Ibbotson, Broughton, Suban or Roberton could be coached to be shutdown defenders in my opinion, and be good at it.

Broughton and Roberton for mine. the other 2 can be very damaging offensively. Ahough I don't mind Broughton in the midfield.

That isn't really my point, which is that it is a coaching decision not to groom a shutdown player. We have the options. If as suggested we recruited a shutdown defender and our existing midfield options are available, then we struggle to fit guys into the team.

Actually I am a bit in favour of skillful shutdown players. MacPharlin is in another league to Grover because of it.

Would that matter if they are better than the present options. Our backline can be very soft at times. If we find someone better to take one of their places who cares. Yes McPharlin is quality. Wish he was 25 not 30.

Umm is everyone forgetting about Silvagni? Clear choice for the 3rd tall/small foward shutdown role. I don't see what other role he could fill?

Seriously all these names being bandied about, Suban/Ibbotson/Roberton etc, Silvagni is a superior defender to them all.

Yes, i did forget about him. mainly because I was thinking about the possibility he would take Grover's place this week. He is under-rated Silvagni, i think he is a terrific footballer. He may be the replacement for Tarrant we have been looking for.

I'm sure at some stage they've all been told to lock down on player X and had varying levels of success.

Broughton can already do it reasonably well but he has so many strings to his bow that the coaches often choose to use him elsewhere.

Ibbo's problem is that he's not really a footballer and gets turned inside out too often. Maybe with more experience he'll improve but his soccer background is obvious at times when he's on the last line and fails to read the play. Got carved up by Rioli and if he still struggles on the last line in his 6th season may never be able to play that position.

Roberton and Suban are the obvious two for mine. Sube's may lack a yard of pace though so that leaves Dylan "Shane Parker Jnr" Roberton to fill the role.

Allow me to be the first to throw Crichton's hat into the ring. Has good skills, good pace, good size (for a small/med) and works hard. He just needs to add weight, strength and experience. I'd certainly rather see him developed into the small defender role than JVB. A lot more upside IMO.

In what galaxy is Roberton quicker than Suban? Also what role do you see Silvagni filling? Full back when Grover goes? Would be a tad undersized IMO.

Third tall I would've thought; after all he's 191cm.

Agreed. Just needs to focus on his dosposal & add bulk...will be ok in long run...he's just a kid still...whereas JVB is 23-24...wont improve...list player or delisted at end of year
