What these idiots fail to realise is that JJ is often involved in the play further up the field that then leads to the Joe the Goose. The fact he can out run much smaller opponents over 100 metres is a mystery to the commentators.
This is exactly it, he can run and work like a small but has the benefit of being a ruck chop out and still warrants a bigger defender which is where he's able to frequently get on the end of these goals by outworking his opponent. No doubt he does some frustrating stuff as well but people who just comment on joe the goose stuff seriously have no idea and that's an indictment on plenty of these so called media analysts who haven't even worked this out yet. One thing he needs to be better about is not automatically trying to break a tackle and passing it off quicker, that used to work a lot early in his career but opposition players have seen it now to know it's coming and make sure their tackles stick.

I would bet Milera can't tackle lots yet due to his fitness, it's actually quite tough to lay a heap of tackles and he's only had a couple preseasons and is still very young. Not saying he'll ever be a tackling pro but his body size would dictate that it's harder for him. Of course that's never an excuse when you simply have to go and there has been occasions where this is the case but I doubt it's all as clear cut as just he doesn't want to. I guess we'll find out more on this as he matures, you would expect next year to see him a bit more physical though given it'll be his third year. I think Lever is another good example, hasn't become a great 1 on 1 defender yet because he lacks the physical size but I've got no doubt he'll improve in that area over the next 2-3 years whoever he's playing for. May not ever be his strength but improvement will come. People here just expect to see these young kids dishing out complete performances because of the glimpses they show when in reality it doesn't happen like that for the overwhelming majority of players. It's the same reason most grand final sides have a certain age and experience profile from a blend of older guys through to some young emerging stars.

Don't disagree, but this is the exact reason I wouldn't risk Milera in a final just yet. But his game never had a big defensive aspect when he was a junior (no pun intended) either. He can do it, but needs it to become an instinct for him to make an impact consistently at AFL level. I believe he will, but he's at least another pre-season away.

Completely agree he's not who I'd bring in for this match if someone is needed.

If Walls is condemning him then JJ is doing something right. I love the outrage about 'Joe the Goose' goals, but how does he keep getting in the position to score? If he's only getting cheap possessions, why can't they stop him?

Because they don’t try too hard to stop him; there is nothing to stop from a JTG the goal has already been created, regardless of whose boot gets the final touch

They want to stop the guys who actually do the creating

Yeah, what would Robert Walls know about forward play?

Its not like he was an all time great, champion centre half forward himself ;)
Except Walls went on to say that JJ doesn't give any goals back, Bicks read out stats tonight that he has given more than Buddy and Kennedy.

Two of the more selfish forwards in the competition. I'd agree Jenkins does more work for his team than those two.

I'd go as far as saying THE 2 selfish forwards.

JJ isn't generally a selfish footballer but he did make some dumb decisions early Friday night.

I agree it's not deliberate selfishness, he genuinely wants to do the team thing. He just doesn't have a natural football brain, if he did he'd be considered one of the best forwards in the game.

I will try and bust open the myth of 'Joe the Goose' goals.
First of all, we should all acknowledge the importance of goals. Goals wins you matches. You can have 0 goals and 17 behinds, and still lose to an opponent with a meager score of 3 goals and 0 behinds.
Secondly, and the most crucial point to my argument, goals are only the result of the gamestyles and what happens up further from the field.
You can have the best forward in the country, but if the midfield is completely being thrashed, then said best forward might as well go off and get a Balfours pie and watch from the stands. There is no such thing as an easy goal without any effort. Easy goals are obtained by either the midfielders beating their opponents, or the forwards working harder than their defenders, or both. Either way, there has to be a chain of actions before a goal is kicked. Effort is needed in all cases when a goal is scored.

Moral of the story, doesn't matter how you get your goals, goals are good!

Look I don’t know what stats either Bicks or Walls are looking at, but what I would say is that a goal assist is not necessarily the same as giving off a gimme

JJ does gobble his share of other people’s gimmes; but giving off when there is still work to do (for example) would still satisfy both Bicks and Walls examples

Yeah, this is asininely superficial

The question is who is responsible for the goal happening not who happened to get their boot on it last

Your last sentence is the asininely superficial.
If The Crows are paying Josh Jenkins $500,000+ to play Joe and get the simple "goose" goals, why wouldn't they just pay you or me $50,000 to play as a Crows forward and delist Jenkins? Would free up a lot of the salary cap!

Jenkins "easy goals" are a result of either:
- him working harder than his opponent
- running faster than his opponent
- he has bad armpit odour and the defenders don't like to get near him
Which do you think is the unlikely answer?

Here’s another word for you to look up “tautology”

Prepare to be mind blown

So why do you think he polls so badly with our coaches?

This is the killer point no amount of mouth breathing can wash away.

Our own coaches don’t consider him one of our best players, despite the “goals”

And let’s not talk about his big game record ;)

I'ved bolded your statement/question. It becomes a misleading question when you're applying your preconceptions about Jenkins. Jenkins polling "badly" is another way of saying "he didn't poll as well as the others in the team".
If I was foolish to go along with your leading question, then I'd say "cos Jenkins is shit".
If I was to twist your question around, then I'd say "cos others in the team were judged to play according to the gameplan better than Jenkins"
And to clarify for other readers, the coaches don't just judge Jenkins for goosey goals, but many other factors eg. tackling, goal assists, pack marks, playing to team structures. However we agree or disagree, Jenkins is deem to be important by the coaches simply by the fact he's continually selected whenever he's fit and available.
