Tell me what every footy expert in the country will be telling us come the pointy end of the season

THERE IS NO REPLACEMENT FOR EXPERIENCE

Like a guy who played less than 50 games who won the Norm in 97.......

Or a young key forward to dragged his team across the line last year. Experience isn't everything.

No it's not

But what will every footy expert in the land say come finals time ?

Can't count for as much as they say. Geelong won a GF in their first in 12 years, we won the only we played in, half that Dogs side had played in 5 finals or less.

Our experienced guys have flopped in finals for years, the whole side has.

Do you think that is he norm? Are you saying we, as well as all other teams, should select and play all new recruits because one of them may be the Norm Smith medal winner in his first year?:D:rainbow:

My point is experience isn't everything. Sure it's important but time and again sides have shown you don't need it.

People will point at Hawthorn but experience didn't get them 08, they developed a mindset that was ruthless enough to win big games.

How many games had Mackay played when he played a blinder against Collingwood in 09?

Now with all those extra games experience it's a given his last few finals would have been better or at least to that standard right?

You can pull one offs out of thin air like Elite does picking one offs I can pick one offs saying sig or pohlkoke or gooch or Doedee have played shockers but the thing about those young players they have played shockers against amateurs

The reason the experts will call it that way is the majority of the time you need experience

And by saying majority of the time what do you read from that ?

Gees you are full of shit sometimes.

I pull one offs? You know I've given you more than one offs.

Speaking of one offs, you've written Galluci off this year based on ONE AFL game. Your words was it was "proven" based on one game.

Been caught out Marty.

You know I'm not a huge Mackay fan but he has been dropped this year for non performance he has come in and performed quite well even though if your biased opinion doesn't agree

And please acknowledge you have a biased opinion at least I can be honest and acknowledge I have a biased opinion on Doedee or Menzel as I don't think they are up to it but happy to be proven wrong doubt I will be but

Based on one AFL game and plenty of poor SANFL games against players who are truly old unfit and weekend warriors why wouldn't I write him off

Bloody sharenberg and slimming have had a better year playing for the bays and Sturt and they aren't AFL standard and the same age

Once again you've failed to get the point.

I brought up Mackay as showin an example where experience doesn't equate to better performance.

And you are intentionally trying to mislead. You know I've given credit to Mackay when I thought he's played well this year. I'm pretty sure I said he played well against Carlton and I didnt have him as an out against the Bulldogs. I also wouldn't have dropped him for this weeks game.

I have a bias against average senior players who have been gifted games at this club at the same one we have been unsuccessful.

Your bias is against the very kids we need to be playing to get us somewhere. I know which bias I'd prefer to have.

Get us somewhere are you kidding

We aren't staying up the top for the next 10 years surely you realise this

Gibbs was by far the biggest error made this year probably for 20 years and that is squarely planted at roo

We need everything to go right this year with our best players to be on song which is why we had the slump when Sloane tex Talia and betts failed

Forget developing this year we need to throw our prime movers at it and hope they hold up to what

Giving up 2 first round picks for Gibbs would have been a bigger mistake.

I agree with your point of ' experience isn't everything'. But you'd have to agree that only new recruits that show a lot in their first year should be used in the A team. Not just any new recruit for the ' Just in case he shows something'.

Burton is just trying to make it sound better for Thommo I reckon. He wouldn't actually be next mid picked. Just that he was last dropped.

Nice for Thommo - shit for every other player busting their arse in the SANFL, who have been told via a radio interview that they're behind a cooked old man in the pecking order.

Agreed. A horrendous comment from a rookie footy manager, did we expect anything different?

Not sure what a club says publicly is ever what they say or believe privately. That feels like Burton massaging Thompson's ego to me. His omission this week is the message the club has "stuck a fork in his arse" (I can live in hope)

Here's my take re- Thommo's selection last round:
Less emphasis on how great Thommo's doing in the SANFL
More emphasis on how others in the SANFL are not playing a quality brand of footy better than Thommo.

Think of Thommo as our barometer to be selected in the AFL side. If you can't make it past Thommo's standards, unlikely you're gonna do great in the AFL.
Also, we are not in a current position to blood young/new players. We need to consolidate our ladder standing, and give it a good crack with the AFL side for top 4 spot. Ideally not to mess around with too many ins and outs if at all possible. Too many ins and outs will create more confusion with team structures.

There is no excuse for what Burton said
