Tholstrup is the most similar to Laurie who replaced Spargo - so a forward who is there to provide pressure first and foremost. The coaches love Kolt as well so I reckon he’s in.

Jefferson vs. JVR is a tough one. Jefferson is in better form and doing a lot right but JVR has been pretty good also, he just hasn’t kicked the goals for various reasons. I reckon they will go with JVR to replace Johnson as JVR can relief ruck and is far more physically developed. Even though Jeffo is key forward height, due to his build and playing style at AFL level he’s probably more likely to get a game if Fritsch or Melk aren’t playing due to injury or form.

That’s would leave Jefferson, Howes and Culley as the emergencies. Either Kolt or Sharp as sub.

The spanner here could be if Melksham misses with his shoulder though. Which, just a guess, is a decent chance IMO.

I thought about that.

Right now it’s two out from the Saints game (Laurie and Johnson) and five missing from the last Casey game (JVR, Kolt, Magician, Culley and Howes) which is the right number for three emergencies.

If Melksham was in serious doubt I’d expect them to have one more not playing for Casey.

If in tonight’s game someone is on managed minutes and only plays the first half then that would suggest there’s a serious injury cloud over someone. Probably Melksham as you say because that shoulder was definitely troubling him significantly.

If Melk was also out I’d expect both JVR and Jefferson to come in.

I see it as potentially being:

JVR for Johnson.
Jeffo for Melksham.
Kolt for Laurie.
Howes, and Culley the emergencies.

Then the potential for limited minutes for someone at Casey, but it's a tricky round to manage in that way so they may just have those two as designated emergencies. There's also the long shot that Lever isn't good to go and Howes is in with Culley emergency, but that's throwing darts a bit.

Kolt must absolutely fly on the track as he's getting games off not really dominating Casey like others.

I feel like there's a player there as when the ball is in his area he can bring a lot of pressure and seems quite powerful. Decision making needs a lot of work though.

I wonder if he’s in to bring that bull like attitude that Aj brings. Yes doesn’t have the height but both aggressive to the ground ball. He does bring the forward pressure which we’ll need.

Can’t say this week’s ins really inspire much excitement. None of them have exactly been lighting it up at Casey.

JVR’s been serviceable, but hardly banging the door down. Tholstrup’s selection feels more and more like he's on the “favourite son” fast track — very little VFL impact but keeps getting games. And Howes has been pretty quiet too, hasn’t really backed up that early-season promise.

I get that we need to rotate and look at the next tier, but rewarding average form doesn’t exactly send the right message to the guys who are putting in the work at VFL level. Feels a bit like we’re picking on name or potential rather than performance.

But the most baffling part is Tom McDonald being left out again. He’s been rock solid all year, arguably in career-best form (2018 excepted), and would be ahead of Steven May in the B&F if we’re being honest. Keeps getting overlooked for blokes who’ve done a third as much. No idea what he’s done wrong.

I get the intent, but I just don’t see this supposed "bull-like attitude" with Tholstrup. He’s averaging about 6 touches and 3 tackles a game — that's hardly imposing. Opposition players aren’t losing sleep over his physicality. Most of the time he’s not even near the ball to make an impact.

Compare that to AJ, who genuinely crashes packs, applies real pressure and makes you earn it. Tholstrup might have the attitude in theory, but so far it’s not translating into anything meaningful on the field. Right now it feels more like picking on potential than performance.

Casey coach Whitford said of Tholstrup’s game last week:

“Koltyn's role compliance on the weekend was a really strong once again”

Ignoring the typo, what that says is Tholstrup did exactly what was asked of him. Disciplined. So that’s probably the answer for why he was recalled (along with being an apparent coach’s favourite).

I mean AJ is averaging less than 6 touches and also 3 tackles. One thing you’ll get with Tholstrup is pressure. That’s the only reason I think he got a game.

Fair point on the stats, but there’s some important context — AJ is playing predominantly as a key forward, not as a high half-forward or flanker rotating through the midfield like Tholstrup. You’re not picking AJ for ground ball gets or repeat efforts at stoppages, you’re picking him to compete aerially and bring the ball to ground.

Tholstrup, on the other hand, should be around the ball more often given his role — yet he’s still only managing a handful of touches and tackles. If pressure is the main reason he’s in the side, I’m just not seeing enough of it to justify the spot.

Correct. That’s why I said Kolt doesn’t have the height behind him but when the ball goes to ground AJ can still aggressively go for it even for a tall fella. They’re different players but both create pressure and love a tackle when they can.

Either way we will still probably get pumped

Absolute shit take bringing in Kolt for Laser. How many 20+2 matches has Kolt had in the 2s to earn his position in the firsts?

Selection integrity at its finest. We won’t be winning much when we continue to gift bloke matches at the expense of those who have earnt it.

Lol. Laurie is garbage mate. Let it go. Tholstrup hasn't done much either, but at least he provides pressure and energy..we gotta get that high pressure game back so thats why he gets a game over Laser who really has sown absolutely nothing at senior level.

You’re basing that on what? 5 minutes in the seniors with **** all opportunity to even adjust to the speed? How the **** is he going to show something in the seniors when he gets 5 minutes of game time in half a season.

Kid runs rampage in the 2s week in/week out. Goal kicking silky mid, little could be said about Kolt who struggles to even hit double digit possessions or a goal in the 2s

Give Laser a proper run in the seniors to get a chance to build some consistency, for **** sakes even Woewodin got gifted better opportunities.

It's a big picture decision - Kolt will be around next year, Laser won't be.

Tholstrup is only getting a game coz they want to be proven right for selecting him where they did. There is absolutely no other way he possibly does.

If he shits the bed in front of a crowd of 15k, imagine how he is going to manage a sell out crowd at the MCG
