Changes v Richmond

I'm mixed as to whether Lyon is ever going to be able to beat it out of duff or ibbo - or whether we're perenially going to see half arsed efforts creeping in from time to time

Agree. But he should keep trying to beat it out of them until they develop guys to replace them. Whatever they did recently worked for Duff. An application or six of the same to Ibbo may get him back on track for a bit.

In Lower (need his grunt around contest), Sandi (play inside 50 m arc) , SOS (in our best 22 imo) , Mac and Fyfe(if available)

Out Suban, Bradley, Roberton and Neale (or Mayne if unavailable)

Still concerns about Dawson and his ability to shut down key forwards and rebound ability (50 DE%)

Maybe we can rotate them. Send Ibbo back to the WAFL for 6 weeks or so, then as soon as we see some old habits creeping in with Duffman he goes back to the WAFL and we unleash the new hungry Ibbo. Rinse and repeat.

I'm more confident than I was at the start of the year that's for sure, Duff's last month or so has been excellent and he's been regularly putting his body on the line. Ibbo invokes feelings of "meh" in me though, doesn't have as many weapons as Duffield and is replaceable. He'll never be the player we hoped he'd be all those years ago.

1 player for the price of 2. It's probably what is required in order to get the most out of them. Who would take Duff's role when he's out though? Hill? Anthony? Pitt? (just considering players with good delivery)

The optimist in me says that once Ibbo innately understands his role (I have this mental picture of Lyon drawing him a diagram) he will be a valuable contributor - hopefully cut down the delay between brain and body through simple instructions and KPIs.

Duffield, whilst having a soft streak that has reared it's head a few times over the years, at least has a football brain. I believe the soft streak can be beat out of them and if so Duff will be fine because the rest of his make up is sound. Ibbo on the other hand, has the softness but also switches off mentally within games and from week to week and this cannot be fixed IMO.

I've seen soft players turned into solid players time and time again but I'm yet to witness an air head without a natural footy brain become a consistent solid player.

Nic Nat.

Duffield has played a lot better in the last 4-5 weeks. He's clearly a better player when he can be part of the 'go forward' as his kicking is very good and positioning is good. The one on one stuff he can get better at. I remember his 2010 season, laid consistent hard tackles and a great year with disposals. I believe Lyon has realized that he needs to put Duffman in a position to receive the ball as he will use it effectively rather than being lost on trying to defend someone.

Ross sounding confident on 6pr that Fyfe will get up.

Good news! :thumbsu:

Lyon has also mentioned real lack of effort in the last quarter and was eluding to a few in the midfield/backline that will come under the microscope this selection meeting.

I'd expect the axe to come down hard on Ibbotson.

Question - I've read and heard on a few occasions today that Silvagni is likely to be fit for selection this weekend. But my impression was for the Adelaide game that he was brought over to replace (suspended) McPharlin. Macca's obviously back this week so does that mean Silvagni may be joining him in defence? If so who do they both replace? Roberton, Dawson, Spurr etc? I wouldn't think they'd have McPharlin, Johnson, Dawson and Silvagni defending in the same line-up... eh I could be hallucinating.

they had said on 9 news that fyfe was cleared of serious damage and may play this weekend pending a fitness test later in the week

Maybe Bradley gets the chop and Silvagni plays forward? God knows.

All in all, I don't think Lyon will tinker in that fashion. I'd expect Ibbo and Suban to come out at the minimum, with McPharlin and Fyfe to come in. After that he'd probably look at Subcliffe, Chrichton and Clarke. Maybe Sheridan's time for the sub role?

Silvagni and Dawson in the same team as Macca won't happen IMO. Suban and ibbo has to go at the minimum. Subra was always a step or two behind, no idea what his role was. He will stay with freo and get an ultimatum akin to Crowley Walters and Pearce.. Shape up or gtfo. Anyway, did Lyon mention mayne and his chance this weekend? Mzungu really is lucky getting a game ATM.

Lyon was very critical of Spurr and Duffield. Oddly I thought those were the only two in the backline who could hold their heads up high. Duffield took a couple of strong marks in the defensive 50. I think Ibbo is one of the weak ones and possibly the softest guy on the list for someone so big. It seems like Spurr and Duffield are in the firing line.

Cheers to Spurr for his attack on the football

Jeers to missed targets in the corridor and to this rusty tailgate.

In:
Elvis
Fyfe

Out:
Suban
Ibbo

If sandi is fit and Mayne is too, then them in and kep out. If Mayne misses, then kep gets a reprieve and sandi comes in. That's a lot of changes... Would like to fit lower in, but not sure they'll want to make more than just the two or three changes.

I guess if sandi isn't fit and Mayne misses, then that's lower's spot.

Lots of ifs this week.

Ross also said in his chat on 6PR that he they are ruthless about keeping their structures when it comes to selection - in basically his own words, effort wont be enough. With structure and balance in mind, I can't see how you can play SCOS, Elvis and Dawson in the same team. Maybe, just maybe, he's going to drop Dawson , but history shows that right now he'll back Dawson over SCOS even after a so-so game.

All in all it's going to be quite hard to call this week, especially with the question marks over some key players (Mayne, Fyfe, 211) and a definite in with McPharlin. Clearly Lyon wasn't happy with things on the weekend, but he backs people in their roles too so even if we say Ibbo was poor, we don't know what Lyon really had him to do and Rosco has shown us before he'll back a player doing the role even if we don't value it as such.

In: maca,fyfe and lower

Out: suban,ibbo and neale

-Crowley to clamp down hard on cotchin
-Fish pub like wise on Dusty Martin
-Deledio ????
Crowley shut Deledio down like no other has in maybe 2 years earlier this year. Would have to think he'll be heading his way again
deBoer played a terrific game too. Forgive me, but does he tag or is he more your "run with" type?

Well, we know that Macca is going to take Riewoldt, he blankets him, so Dawson/Silvagni will be taking Maric when he roams down there. Does Richmond have another tall forward?

The real bonus is if Dawson can take Riewoldt and leave Macca to float around the defensive 50.

Think you're spot on with the changes. Crowley to grab a handful of crotchin. Parisian porcine on Martin.

Pav absolutely towelled up Rance last time. I couldn't believe people are suggesting Rance for AA on the main board after seeing that performance. I expect they will have a floater helping Rance out this time. If they don't, Pav to move forward in Coleman race.
