Was surprised at the selections. Firstly - we needed to make a statement that we can’t be monstered.

Second, Collingwood have talls but are a more mobile team we had this many players over 193: Gardner, Keath, Young, English, Bruce, Naughton and Cordy - that’s at least one too many.

Should have been: Cordy on Mihochek (spelling?) Trengrove on Cox and roll though the ruck. English (I don’t think any of us thought that Grundy would not kill English but not so much that our Mids couldn’t shark him. Bruce and Young (must have known that Naughty didn’t have the game fitness - understand only way he could get it is probably playing so probably a risk worth taking that didn’t come off. Horrible delivery.

Next week we have Carlton - also horrible but came back and some of their guns Cripps and Docherty and new Marin were very good. Kruz our which will make a whole difference but have a monster in Casobault who we could make look good if we can’t ply with intent and pick the right team

Move Dunkley out a bit and put Smith in the guts as a rover. He got more ball than most but wasted it with loopy high misdirected panic handballs. Dunkley in and get the ball and Smith on the wing and forward Johnno style.

LLoyd dropped his head horrendously once and subtly a second time and Collingwood ran off easily. Can’t stand for that. Just can’t. Is a good player but Dickson is a proven big game player - if fit his record is fantastic and he chases.

No mongrel: if we can have Libba, Duryea or West - the Gowers is the best. Would be keen to bring Red in - at least he is aggressive as a runner - we looked so slow.

Cordy was average and looks to have lost is way but is a good match for McGovern so maybe leave him? Or play Williams starting (was ok) and bring in Red.

Young delivered in the preseason and can hold a role forward and top into defence when Trengrove goes in the ruck.

In: Vandermeer/Young/Richards, Lipinski
Out: Gardner, Young

Carlton basically only have Casboult and McGovern as talls if McKay isn't back so we don't need the extra height. Naughton and Dale permanently forward with Bruce rotating in the ruck. No Kreuzer is a big help and we need the extra pace.

Bruce isn’t a god damn ruckman can we not start doing this sh!t again

I’d rather play Dunkley as ruck and a 4th mid than change the structure of the two talls that was the reason we traded for Bruce.

OUT:
Ryan Gardner - looks so far off it isn't funny. Needs to work on things in the VFL before he comes near seniors. May not see him again but don't want to be too harsh quite yet...
Lewis Young - does not look ready for consistent seniors. There is a future for him, but not yet
Bailey Dale - a single kick and no tackles from a half forward. They obviously were left with no supply, but that performance just wasn't good enough. May get lucky if Lipinski isn't fit yet

IN:
Toby McLean - my god were our midfielders dogshit last night. This is where McLean gets another go to see if he can do any better. I try not to kneejerk react to a single game, but god it was concerning seeing how poor the big 3 were.
Patrick Lipinski - miss his classy ball use and quickness
Ed Richards - no brainer. Dominated in the practice match, one of our quicker players and better users

Lucky not to be dropped:
Suckling - played out of position
Lloyd - way too soft, but I am not keen on seeing the forward line punished too much for the mids mistakes
Cavarra - first game. Gets a run of games before being dropped, as is tradition
Naughton - waayyyy underdone but not sure dropping him will help in any way. Hopefully turns it around soon because that game was an absolute shocked

I think Bruce rucking was a desperation move thanks to English being so comprehensively beaten. My god our midfield were shameful last night. I agree with not wanting to see Bruce in there at all, but I'm guessing they only did it because English and Young were failing, and they needed to find a way to bring Bruce into the game. Just not great all around

No way would they make these kinds of changes, but watching the GWS final and that game last night makes me wonder what kind of difference guys like Rhylee West, Jordon Sweet, Cal Porter, Billy Gowers and Lachie Young would make to this team. Especially Sweet and Porter who are yet to debut.

I'd like to think games like last night are where a tap ruckman like Sweet would actually shine. Of course, you then require your midfielders to actually lift a finger to follow up on their work...

Out: Anyone over 24 and guaranteed a list spot next year.

In: Anyone under 24 plus anyone who isn't guaranteed a list spot next year.

This season wont last 2 weeks so might as well see what these guys like Gardiner have.
Gameday thread and autopsy would be fun again :p

No changes...

But if you shirk one contest or don’t put in 100% effort you never don the jumper again.

Surely you’re taking the piss? No changes?
I’ll have a crack. Lewis Young to full back, he played well in the final last year in that position. Gardner out for Lipinsky and possibly someone else out for Richards, maybe Dale. Suckling back to the backline, or out of the side, he’s NOT a forward

Don’t be surprised to see Gardner retain his spot based on an inner sanctum set of standards he was given that we’re not privy to.

That midfield was woeful. I'm one of McLean's biggest critics and I think he needs to come in, and needs to be in the middle. I'd also give up on Gardner and move Lewie Young back.
I think McLean needs to come in to give a point of difference to our midfield. We are very much same same with Bont Macrae and Dunks in the middle. Very slow to adjust defensively as none of them are particularly quick.
Still think there is a big gap in our midfield for a bloke with some electric pace. To either explode away from the contest or shutdown the opposition when they get first hands on it.

Sadly West is out for 6-8 weeks with a knee injury. Otherwise he'd be a great fit. I'm on board with Sweet on the bench in case English gets physically monstered again.
I feel that our lack of pace hurt us the most. So not sure adding a back up ruck to the rotation will help. With Kreuzer going down i would be more inclined to back Timmy , drop Gardener to fix our team balance.
And bring in Richards for some pace across the ground
